Football Manager Finds Out He's Fired On Live TV

((HT: BBC/Youtube))

Gus Poyet's term as manager at Brighton and Hove Albion ended on not-so-good terms in the Championship...

Poyet led Brighton to the playoffs last season but, following their semi-final loss to Crystal Palace, Poyet, his assistant Mauricio Taricco, and coach Charlie Oatway were all suspended.

And the HQ, along with everyone else, really doesn't know why... could be something to do with a bizarre incident in his locker room where someone spread crap on the walls of the Crystal Palace dressing room they were housed in... and the HQ means "literally smeared crap..."

Taricco's suspension was eventually lifted, but Poyet failed to appear at a disciplinary hearing last week- although he did attend a subsequent hearing Thursday.

Thing is... Poyet didn't know he was fired until, as a color commentator for BBC's coverage of Confederations Cup, his host told him...

Here's the announcement as it went down...

Nothing like finding out from someone not your boss...

The League Managers Association (the British version of the coach's union) is backing Poyet in his appeal...
Appeal for what... we dunno...

But it could be all a load of crap...

MONDAY UPDATE: Brighton disagree with Poyet (of course)

"In relation to comments made by Gus Poyet, the club would like to point out that its disciplinary panel considered the matter on the afternoon of Friday June 21 and for most of Saturday June 22.

"The club spent much of Sunday June 23 in discussion with Gus and his representatives.

"For legal reasons we cannot say anything about the content of those discussions but Gus was well aware, before he appeared on the BBC last evening, that his dismissal was pending.

"Given Gus has a right to appeal the decision to dismiss him, the club will not be making any further comment on this matter at this time."

OSG Prem: Hull City Promoted, Dancing In The Dressing Room...

((HT: TheBeanyMan62))

This is the beauty of the Premier League and the Football League structure overseas...

You win and keep winning, you can improve your standing... you lose and don't prove your worth, you get demoted...
If you win enough and get promoted to the Premier League... it could improve your team's lifestyle by, around, $100-million.

Cardiff City had aleady punched their ticket last week. Hull City could go with a win or a draw and some help. As it turns out, it had to be the latter, which put the team on eggshells until a half-hour after their own game finished...

"The 10, 12 minutes was just ridiculous and having to wait. We've seen people in tunnels, people walking in corridors, people hiding in toilets, it was just really incredible," Hull manager Steve Bruce said afterwards.

"And for Leeds to score, it was just remarkable and just shows you how difficult a league this is.

"I don't think I've ever been supporting Leeds but wow - for Leeds United to do it for me is remarkable."

Oh, just so you know... those dancing skills were put forth by midfielder Ahmed Elmohamedy- on loan from Sunderland- who, probably, could have used him this season.

How To Go From Losing To Champs In One Easy Kick

((HT: Sky Sports))

And for that, the HQ takes you to League One for the season-ender between Doncaster Rovers and Brentford...

Brentford had a chance to make sure they were promoted outright and didn't have to go through the League One elimination playoffs to worry about it. Clayton Donaldson was taken down in the box, and that left it all up to on-loan Fulham striker Marcello Trotta to mail in the penalty shot.

Billy Paynter gets the credit for heading all the way down to the other end and pass to James Coppinger for the game winner for Doncaster in the 6th minute of stoppage time.

Apparently, it was the first time that Rovers broke out the green kit...
The HQ guesses it won't be the last...

Here's how Sky News covered it...

I don't believe what I just saw... with all apologies to Jack Buck...

OSG Prem: Warnock Not A Fan Of Leeds Fans

((HT: FA Cup/youtube))

Manchester City is rolling right now in the FA Cup...

They took it to Leeds United 4-0 after pairing Yaya Toure, Tevez, and Aguero up front for the first time since the pre-season.

During the latter stages at the game, Leeds fans jumped on manager Neil Warnock chanting "Warnock- time to go" in their fan's end as the game came to a close.

"I don't deserve that (abuse) after the year I have had, but I am unlucky to have been at three clubs with three takeovers," he said.

"I understand their feelings and the noise they make shows what sort of club it is. If we go up, the owners know I won't be here and the further away we get (from promotion) the club will be looking to see what they're going to do and, if I can, I will help them."

Here's Warnock after the loss...

Warnock has been involved with 8 straight promotion opportunities and Leeds United is eight points away from the playoff picture in the Championship.

Could Bollywood Head To Blackburn...???

If the HQ was an investor in Blackburn Rovers, we would explode if this turned out to be true...

But there are reports, mainly from SkySports, that Blackburn advisor Shebby Singh may be...

"May be..."

...having talks with former Arsenal trainee, and former Bollywood actor, Judan Ali to take over for the recently sacked Henning Berg. Berg, you'll remember, lasted only 57 days and 10 games as Rovers dropped to 17th in the Championship table.

Here's what went down when Berg got booted...
((HT: SkySports/youtube))

Berg took over for Robbie Kean, who was at the helm when Rovers were relegated last season from the Premier League- and was in charge of the team for the first part of this season in the Championship.

Here's what Ali is trying to become on the pitch...
((HT: slenkyshots))

Former Aston Villa youth-team boss Kevin MacDonald is the favorite to replace Berg, though ex-QPR manager Mark Hughes, a former Rovers boss, and Phil Brown are also in the frame. Brown, the former Hull and Bolton boss, has confirmed he has applied for the job.

The HQ is waiting for the subsequent rebellion if Ali gets the gig...

More when we know more...

Hooligans Attack Another Goalie During Play (UPDATED with ID)

((HT: SkySports/youtube))

We now have another bout of outright, classless hooliganism from Friday night...

Sheffield Wednesday goalie Chris Kirkland was attacked by a Leeds United fan who came onto the pitch after a goal that had tied the game 1-1 in the 77th minute.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Dave Jones called for Leeds fans to be banned from "every away ground."

It was the top of all the shenanigans that came out of Leeds supporter's mouths as they sang about Leeds fans that had been killed 12 years ago and even sang about Jones and his criminal charges from years past.

Here's the short version of the incident...

Leeds boss Neil Warnock told Sky:

"I felt embarrassed to be a manager when I saw that," Warnock told Sky Sports 1. "I thought it was an absolute disgrace. I think they should get the guy and prosecute him and put him in prison. (Kirkland) went down like a ton of bricks, but that doesn't make a difference. Nobody should be on the pitch doing that.

"I hope we can make an absolute issue of it. He spoiled everything for everyone. I've not enjoyed that when I see a moron like that. I am not proud of being Leeds manager when I see that. I don't mind the rivalry between us -- there was a great atmosphere. To see things like that on the field of play, there is no place for it -- I am absolutely embarrassed."

Warnock called for the assailant to be brought up on charges. Leeds came out with a statement saying that the publicly apologize for the actions of their fans and will cooperate fully with police.

SATURDAY AM UPDATE: South Yorkshire Police have ID'ed the attacker of Kirkland, but are not announcing his name at present.

Senior investigating officer, Detective Inspector Mark Monteiro, told the local press: "With the public's assistance we have clearly identified the offender who ran on to the pitch during last night's game between Sheffield Wednesday FC and Leeds United FC and who is suspected of assaulting the Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper.

"We are dealing with the complaint made by the player and we are currently taking statements, collating evidence and making inquiries to locate and arrest the offender."

It seems that a lot of social networking led to the divulging of the identity- and that included a possible phone number to call the guy (and call the guy out).

Just When It Couldn't Get Any Weirder For Port Vale

The HQ has covered the travails of League 2 Port Vale as part of our coverage of all of the administration issues this season...

They've been docked ten points because of their financials, and now they've had to have a late-season match abandoned with possible-promotion candidate Shrewsbury Town because of what happened below...
((HT: STFCJOEL))

From The Guardian newspaper:

Shrewsbury striker Terry Gornell told BBC Radio Shropshire: "The initial reaction when the lights went out was that you see it all the time and that they'd soon be back on. You're in the game and you're not worrying about what's happening off the field.

"But, as soon as they started evacuating the stand, you knew there was slim chance of it carrying on.

"The main thing is nobody was hurt and it all went smoothly but we're in shock. We can't believe this has happened. It was one of our best performances of the season and we were playing some great football."

Your AFC Wimbledon Match Update

((HT: AFCWimbledonTV))

The HQ's adopted franchise for Football League soccer overseas had their Saturday match against Hereford United at Cherry Red, drawing 1-1. Both teams scored in the first 25 minutes, and AFC had their chances to leave the field with the extra two points...

But one call in the second half kept the match a draw...
Here's your highlights...

The standings now have AFC tied for 7th after four matches this season in nPower League 2 with 7 points and a +3 goal differential. Next Saturday the team plays at Macclesfield Town.
