((HT: The FA their own selves))
Well, League Two Scunthorpe and Non-league Worcester City went at it in the longest penalty kick shootout in the competition's history.
It ended up going 16 kicks with the Iron going 14-13 for the win to advance into the third round.
How would that have gone in Scunthorpe, the way their season has gone so far, if Worcester had prevailed...???

Cap One Cup: Liverpool Advances After 15 Rounds of PK
((HT: Beanyman Sports))
The match between Liverpool and Middlesbrough took almost two and a half hours to complete- with the teams going into the 15th round of penalty kicks before it was decided in the bottom half off a Boro miss...
Here's the highlights
And manager Brendan Rodgers discussing a long night
Albert Adomah, for the record, is the Boro player who punched his shot wide in the bottom of the 15th after a spirited comeback at Anfield by a squad that didn't seem all that bent out of shape having to play a 4th Round game on the road.
Threr were, probably, a lot of records set in the match. But Liverpool advances into the Round of 16 with the other 6 squads who join the 10 advancing today tomorrow.

The Other Semi Is Set In Brazil
((HT: ESPN/FIFA))
And it was one side that showed its prowess and another who escaped from Cinderella...
In the first game of the day Argentina got an early strike and rode it to a 1-0 win over a spirited Belgium side. And, with everyone looking at Lionel Messi as the man to keep in check, it was Higuain and the other nine to pick up the slack
The nightcap was Costa Rica and the Netherlands. Everyone was looking for the Oranje to steamroll the upstart of the final 8, but the Ticos made them earn it- going scoreless through 90 and extra time- forcing the Dutch to penalty kicks. Netherlands head coach Louis Van Gaal made an interesting switch leading to the kicks, swapping out goaltenders- bringing in Newcastle's Tim Krul for the final act.
The gamble worked
News on Neymar from the Brazilian physicians have him back being active in 40-45 days- certainly good news for the sport as FIFA will examine the knee to the back that caused the injury.

Sunday From Brazil: Dutch Come Back On El Tri, Ticos Advance to Quarters
((HT: ESPN/FIFA))
It will be one of those questions for the Dutch, now, moving forward...
Did it galvanize you or did it take too much out of you...???
Mexico had their way with the Oranje for 80 minutes or so, but head coach Louis Van Gaal made a van Persie substitution count for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar for the conversion of a late PK and a 2-1 stoppage time win to advance to the final 8.
And, yes, Arjen Robben flopped for the avail on the penalty kick
Here's the analysis
And it appears that Mexico head coach Miguel Herrera would like to blame the officials for calling the Robben dive
Univision should sign Herrera for the remainder of the tournament as an analyst right now...
In the night cap, Costa Rica had the lead and was fighting off an anemic Greece offense for 20-plus minutes before a late equalizer and penalty kicks themselves. Navas came up big in net and Costa Rica advances to their first quarterfinal ever.
The whole idea of him being off his line is out the window, apparently...
All that effort from Costa Rica as they were a man down...

Suarez "Lost His Balance" Uruguay And Chile Lost Their Games
((HT: ESPN/FIFA))
Luis Suarez wrote his appeal to FIFA for his four-month, nine-match ban. It said in part:
"After the impact ... I lost my balance, making my body unstable and falling on top of my opponent," Suarez wrote in his submission to the panel which met Wednesday, one day after Uruguay beat Italy 1-0 in a decisive group-stage match.
"At that moment I hit my face against the player leaving a small bruise on my cheek and a strong pain in my teeth."
Well okay, then...
FIFA has seven days to hear the appeal from the Uruguayan Football Federation.
Without Suarez, the lack of offense showed in a 2-0 loss where James Rodriguez scored both goals- and, for the record, it's pronounced "Hah-mez..." and he's scored in six straight matches for Colombia...
And James' golazo sent Colombia on their way
And Colombia get Brazil in the next round as they survived their match with Chile- and it took PK's to get there.
The post became Julio Cesar's bet friend in extra time and the shootout...
And American audiences got to hear Ian and Macca call a great one...

Ivory Coast Was In, Then They Weren't...
((HT: ESPN/FIFA))
If the Ivory Coast won with the firepower they had- Yaya Toure, Kolo Toure, Bony, and Drogba... then it would have been a great offensive show for the knockout round. If only the head coach had gotten his starting line-up right (or just kept it constant). Drogba came in as Super Sub in the 2 previous games, but was started in Game 3.
This kill shot didn't work. But a comeback over Greece almost got them in with the draw...
Yeah, that didn't go well either in stoppage time...
It has to be seen to believed...
So, Greece advances to the knockout stages for the first time with the 2-1 win...
Bully for them...

Okay, So Brazil Didn't Lose... But It Was Interesting
((HT: ESPN/FIFA))
Here's the turning point in the Brazil-Croatia match and it was a HORRIBLE CALL!!!
Sufficed to say, the Croat coach decided to speak out...
"We better give it up now and go home," Niko Kovac said. "We talk about respect, Croatia didn't get any."
"If that was a penalty, we should be playing basketball," Kovac said. "Those kinds of fouls are penalised there.
"That is shameful, this is not a World Cup referee. He had one kind of criteria for them and another for us. The rules were not the same."
And there you go... FIFA is off and running...

Sportsmanship...Pass It On...
In an age of diving, overacting, and really bad attempts at drawing fouls on your opponent...
There is an instance...
Notice the HQ said "an instance" of the exact opposite in the Bundesliga...
Werder Bremen's Aaron Hunt looks like he goes down, but he convinces the ref that FC Nurnberg's Javier Pinola doesn't, in fact, touch him, at all...
The situation goes from Bremen being 2-0 up, to facing a PK to go up 3, to getting back to a game that Bremen had in hand without the PK at all...
Here's analysis in German and you get to see what we're talking about...

OSG Prem: Hull City's Bruce Probably Is Getting Fined Again...
((HT: BPL))
Hull City manager Steve Bruce thinks he got jobbed in his 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace...
On two occasions, Bruce thought Hull should have been awarded two PK's and brings up an interesting point about holding referees accountable in the media...
Don't think it'll happen, but it's an interesting point...
Allan McGregor's nutty at the end by Hull City gave them a red and a trim to 10 men...
Interesting to see what happens to the keeper there as well...

OSG Prem: Liverpool Smokes Everton, Arsenal Survives, Merson Laughs...
((HT: NBC Sports/BPL))
A hearty welcome back to the Premier after the FA Cup ties shows us that Liverpool looks like they'll be hanging around for a while...
Sturridge had two, Gerrard and Suarez one each and the reds blew Everton out of the gym, 4-0, at Anfield...
It was 3-0 before you could blink, really, and Sturridge looked motivated and enjoyed taking USMNT goalkeeper Tim Howard to Lob City with his second...
But, probably, the funniest moment of the day was when Sky Sports Paul Merson absolutely lost it when Sturridge skied his PK attempt for the hat trick...
((HT: Sky Sports))
Manchester United wasted no time welcoming back Robin van Persie with a mark on the score sheet and new import Juan Mata added some handiwork on his own as ManU took care of Cardiff, 2-0...
Swansea picked up a needed three points with a 2-0 shutout of Fulham...
Southampton and Arsenal each picked up a point in a 2-2 draw. The more important issue is the red card of Flamini, which will keep him out of three matches in the Arsenal midfield...
Norwich and Newscastle ended 10v10, but it didn't add any offense for their scoreless draw...
And Crystal Palace held off 10-man Hull City 1-0 and pick up a huge three points for Tony Pulis

OSG Prem: ManU Problems Continue In Cap One Semi
By losing to Sunderland in penalty kicks...
How is that going to sit with the Red Devil faithful...???
Here's the evidence from the shootout...
((HT: beInSports))
In a dreadful start to the season, the Black Cats have now made it to a cup final to play Manchester City...
"My feelings are for them (the Sunderland fans)," Poyet told Sky Sports after the game.
"It's been a difficult season, nothing to enjoy. They deserve that, so let's see if we can go one better and win the final as well.
"This match was immense. What we need(ed) to do to win this game! This is the good thing with cups, you never know what is going to happen."
Here's David Moyes- still confident he has a job, but refusing to answer questions about obtaining Juan Mata in a very expensive transfer...
In a note purely based on capitalism, Manchester United have dropped to fourth place for the first time in a list of the world's highest earning clubs.
United's total revenue has increased from £323.7m to £346.5m in the last season, but Bayern Munich passed them with a revenue increase by 17 percent to £352.5m
And United's books are based on trophy success... which they're not having this year at all...

OSG Clasico: Barca Up At The Break (UPDATED W/Barca 2-1 Win)
((HT: beINSport))
And here's how... it had nothing to do with Messi or CR7
The game is being seen by a billion people- about three times the Roman Numeral Clasico played here in the States...
Chew on that for a second...
More game details at the final whistle...
PM UPDATE: A ridiculous goal by Alexis Sanchez gave Barca enough cushion to survive el Clasico, 2-1. But one point of contention for the Real fans came from this no-call that should have given an equalizer to the visitors...

OSG Prem: Mourinho Chases Lambert In Postgame
((HT: BPL/NBCSN))
The Villa-Chelsea match will be more known for a couple of events on the pitch than anything else...
Should Ivanovic have been given a red card for his elbowing of Benteke for the challenge in the air...???
Should Villa have been given a stoppage time PK for a John Terry hand ball in the box...???
Answers are, probably, yes and yes...
Either way... Villa comes away from their first two matches with three points instead of four and Jose Mourinho decided to do some verbal jousting on his counterpart, Paul Lambert, in the postgame interview...
Evidence below...
It will be an interesting season if business picks up the way it has already...

And We're Off: Sturridge Nets First Prem Goal Of 2013, Mignolet Comes Up Huge In Debut
((HT: BPL/Canal+))
Daniel Sturridge is the answer to your trivia question... as he opened the scoring of the 2013/14 Premier League season as Liverpool took on Stoke and their pesky defensive-minded soccer.
Iago Aspas found Sturridge on a pass across the outside of the box before Sturridge's shot went through the legs of Robert Huth and found the far post beating Asmir Begovic for the goal.
Liverpool's hearts were almost broken in the 88th minute at Anfield as Daniel Agger was called for a hand ball in the box. But Jonathan Walters penalty kick attempt was saved by Simon Mignolet- as was the follow- to preserve the shut out.
Here's the first of the firsts of this season in the 1-0 win...
And the HQ wonders if new Stoke manager Mark Hughes still thinks his squad stinks...

OSG Soccer: Gold Cup Controversy In Quarters
((HT: Fox Soccer))
It's one of those feel good stories...
To start, anyway...
Everyone knows what the nation of Haiti has gone through this last few years, and the FHF was able to have a team qualify for the Gold Cup and had a chance to make it into the semi-finals...
But... and this is a big "But" in the game against El Salvador...
Rodolfo Zalaya got to score the game-winner from the spot, but here's what led to the 1-nil win...
The HQ knows that there's a great deal of (what's the word) "acting..." "embellishing..."
Whatever you'd like to call it...
And to see something like this kill Haiti's buzz, that's not cool. But they do have a lot to go home to and a lot to build on...

Goalie Gets Game-Winning PK Goal (OR: A Long Night For MLS Almost Got Longer)
((HT: Pro Soccer Talk))
It was a long night for MLS teams in the current round of the US Open Cup...
But, the moment of survival came from the Chivas USA-LA Blues matchup...
It's been a long year for the Chivas franchise. Last in attendance, last in scoring, last in win-loss record, and last in pretty much everything in MLS- and there's even talk of an ownership change and a location change. But Dan Kennedy gave the Goats their moment of the current season...
He put a penalty kick home and it ended up being the winning margin to send them into Round 4...
((HT: Andrew Watson))
It was a successful evening for a lot of the USL Pro teams against their big brothers...
Orlando City SC knocked off Sporting KC 3-1. And the Charleston Battery beat San Jose 1-0 as Colin Falvey got the game winner in the 73rd minute- just after Quakes defender Brad Ring got his second yellow on the night...
Falvey was understandably emotional...
((HT: Live5news.com))

The Battery has now defeated MLS opposition on nine occasions in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup; DC United (1999), MetroStars (2001, 2004), Houston Dynamo (2007, 2008), FC Dallas (2008), Chivas USA (2009), Chicago Fire (2010) and San Jose Earthquakes (2013)...
D.C. United, Philadelphia, FC Dallas, New England, Sporting Kansas City, Real Salt Lake and Chivas USA all survived to move into the fourth round.

Now, This Is How To Keep Your Season Alive...
((HT: Sky Sports))
Take you to the nPower Championships playoffs... Watford and Leicester City...
Anthony Knockaert has a penalty to ensure that his team makes it to the final at Wembley...
But... and this is the biggest of buts...
Troy Deeney's header sends them to the finals and the HQ wonders if Watford manager Gianfranco Zola has, in fact, recovered...
"I can't imagine a worse way to lose," Leicester manager Nigel Pearson said afterwards. "When you get a penalty you just hope he scores it - then what happened after that compounds the misery.
"Anthony is distraught as you would expect. I'm the first to admit it was a generous penalty decision. But to concede off the resulting penalty save is very hard to take.
"Unfortunately that's the nature of the beast."
Sky Sports gets all the credit in the world for the headline: "Knockaert Blow"
And Sky Sports News has this awesome program called "Soccer Saturday" which has a whip-around of all the action from all the games in all of the classifications as soon as they kick off...
Here was the reaction of their on-site guy, Johnny Phillips, as he had to recap the whole thing...
Watford now plays the winner of Brighton and Crystal Palace for the third promotion spot

How To Go From Losing To Champs In One Easy Kick
((HT: Sky Sports))
And for that, the HQ takes you to League One for the season-ender between Doncaster Rovers and Brentford...
Brentford had a chance to make sure they were promoted outright and didn't have to go through the League One elimination playoffs to worry about it. Clayton Donaldson was taken down in the box, and that left it all up to on-loan Fulham striker Marcello Trotta to mail in the penalty shot.
Billy Paynter gets the credit for heading all the way down to the other end and pass to James Coppinger for the game winner for Doncaster in the 6th minute of stoppage time.
Apparently, it was the first time that Rovers broke out the green kit...
The HQ guesses it won't be the last...
Here's how Sky News covered it...
