Cap One Cup: Liverpool Advances After 15 Rounds of PK

((HT: Beanyman Sports))

The match between Liverpool and Middlesbrough took almost two and a half hours to complete- with the teams going into the 15th round of penalty kicks before it was decided in the bottom half off a Boro miss...

Here's the highlights

And manager Brendan Rodgers discussing a long night

Albert Adomah, for the record, is the Boro player who punched his shot wide in the bottom of the 15th after a spirited comeback at Anfield by a squad that didn't seem all that bent out of shape having to play a 4th Round game on the road.

Threr were, probably, a lot of records set in the match. But Liverpool advances into the Round of 16 with the other 6 squads who join the 10 advancing today tomorrow.

How Does North Carolina Give Up 70...???

((HT: WNCT-TV))

Larry Fedora has some 'splaining to do...

How, in the age of trying to improve your defensive stock do you do this...???

Allow East Carolina QB Shane Carden to throw for 438 yards
Allow three second quarter touchdowns, including a pick-6
Allow 789 total yards by the Pirates offense
Allow the most points scored in school history
Allow the most yards in school history

Bottom line was that the Tarheels did and it ended up being a 29-point loss (70-41) that, really, didn't even seem that close...

Here's the highlights- obviously condensed a great deal for television sake
Greenville, NC | News | Weather | Sports - WNCT.com

The American Conference now has its poster child in both Carden and East Carolina. It will be interesting to see what happens in their conference with them and, more importantly, just how much of a leash the coaching staff in Chapel Hill will have going forward.

OSG CFB: Rose-Hulman And Illinois College Score 142

((HT: RHIT Football))

A Division III record was set when Rose Hulman and Illinois College played a 74-68 game in triple overtime- most combined points in a game.

Here are the details from Rose-Hulman their own selves:

Rose-Hulman set school records for total offense in a game (824 yards), passing yards in a game (603), touchdown passes (7) and total plays run (114). Illinois College also made history with 745 yards of total offense.

The two teams combined for 1,569 yards of total offense, 1,138 yards of passing offense and 77 first downs in a game that tied the longest contest in Rose-Hulman football history at three overtimes.

Both teams also set the NCAA Division III single game record for offensive plays in a game. Illinois College holds the new national record with 117 offensive plays, Rose-Hulman ran 114 and the two teams combined for a new mark of 231 plays from scrimmage.

Here's head coach Jeff Sokol on the win

Austin Swenson threw for 603 yards and 7 TD's off a 37-for-60 performance

Greg Lee had 162 yards rushing for the Figthing Engineers and talked about the game-winning score

The Good And The Bad In Thursday College Football Record Breaking

((HT: ESPN))

First, let's go with the good... well, "good" if you're a fan of Texas A&M-Commerce

98 points, 986 yards of total offense and a 78-point win over East Texas Baptist
Here's the short version...

Not surprisingly, the 986 yards is an NCAA Division II record for total offense. They also set Lone Star Conference records for points scored with 98, tied the touchdown record with 13, broke the record for the most point after attempts with 13 and tied the record with 11 PATs made. A&M-Commerce set a record for most points in a half with 57.

On the flip side, NCAA DII South Atlantic Conference power Tusculum allowed (or "didn't allow?") minus-100 total yards and minus-124 yards rushing to set the NCAA single-game records in a 71-0 victory over the College of Faith.

Here's what Tusculum thought about the match-up before the game
((HT: Tusculum Athletics))

The previous record was minus-69, by Division II school Fort Valley State against Miles in 1993. The previous record for fewest yards rushing allowed was minus-112, by Division III program Coast Guard against Wesleyan (Connecticut) in 1989.

Tusculum beat Faith last year 63-0 and here's the Frankie DeBusk show from that week

LeBron Almost Half Of Miami Offense

((HT: Sun Sports))

But, they were playing Charlotte...

Here's the effort that was one point short of Carmelo Anthony's season-high of 62

James made 22 of 33 shots from the floor- including his first eight 3-point attempts.
His career best was 56 points back in 2005 for Cleveland against Toronto.

Glen Rice scored 56 to set the Heat record on April 15, 1995, against Orlando, so the Heat record held for almost 19 years...

James had 24 points at halftime then added just as many (well, really 25) in the third quarter...

Randy Moss' Daughter Sets D3 Scoring Record

She was at the University of Florida, but nowadays Sydney Moss is tolling at Thomas More College. She set the new NCAA Division III scoring mark with 63 points in a 106-88 win over Waynesburg (Pa.) University in the President's Athletic Conference tournament...

The old record was 61

Here's some highlights
((HT: Jason Dudas))

Thomas More improved to 27-0 and a conference final.

So you know, the D1 record is 60 by Cindy Brown for Long Beach State against San Jose State back in 1987.

Jacksonville ABA Team Sets Scoring Mark

In 2012, the Jacksonville Giants set the high point mark with a 211-84 win over the Columbus Riverballers. They also scored 209 in another 2012 game...

Paul Westhead is, probably, frothing at the mouth over these numbers...

Three weeks ago, they broke that record with a 222-100 win over the Georgia Roadrunners.

“It really created a bond, everybody working together. It’s not just the points, it’s the teamwork that allowed us to break those records,” said Jacksonville coach Kevin Waters after the 222-point performance.

The 211-point performance was the fifth time in four seasons the Giants have scored 200 points or more- twice in 2011 beating the Georgia Gwizzlies 206-102 and the Florida Makos 204-85.

But tonight in Jacksonville, they broke that record in a 233-73 win over the Gainesville Heat...

Just to give you an idea as to how prolific the Giants are, here are some highlights of a game from a month ago against the Southwest Warriors...
((HT: TwinSportsTV))

The Giants have lost only once this ABA season...

Chandler Parsons Has A Bit Of An Outside Shot

((HT: NBA))

Houston was facing a Memphis Grizzlies team that had, until last night were 0-10 against Southwest Division squads, and still lost with the effort we'll talk about below...

Chandler Parsons hit a career-high 34 points on 11-for-17 shooting, including 10-for-14 shooting from 3-point range. But Houston (29-16) had a three-game win streak snapped in an 88-87 win by the Griz...

Here's the highlights of his shooting...

For the record, Parsons hit his first 10 3-point attempts of the second half, matching Kenny Smith's franchise record for most consecutive shots hit from three. Parsons also become the first player in franchise history to hit six three-pointers in a quarter when he shot 6-for-6 in the third...

Still didn't work...

Carmelo Goes For 62 At MSG

((HT: MSG/NBA))

Carmelo Anthony had a bit of a busy night...

37 in the first half...that ended this way...

And ended this way...

62 points for a record at MSG beating Kobe Bryant and Bernard King...
Well, actually... it ended this way... postgame interviews are like that...

As his 62 was half of the Knicks output in a 125-96 win over Charlotte...
Anthony was the only Knick to shoot attempts in double figures in both field goals and free throws... as a matter of fact, JR Smith was the only other Knick to shoot a free throw...

Just one...

OSG High: UIL Games At Jerry-World Set Records

((HT: WFAA-TV))

And made for good highlights...

Aledo High became the first team in US high school football history (that the HQ can think of) that cleared 1,000 points in their season. Remember, Aledo was the team that beat one team 91-0 and caused the one of the parents of the team that got beat to call for a bullying investigation...

That went well...

And the Allen-Pearland game set a UIL record for attendance of almost 55,000 at Cowboys Stadium

Here's your look...

UK-Baylor Goes For 263 Points... In Women's Hoops...

((HT: ESPN))

The Kentucky-Baylor doubleheader at Jerry World took a little longer than it would have normally...

Because the women's game went 4 overtimes and was good for 263 points total in the 133-130 win by 5th-ranked Kentucky...

Here's the highlights...

Odyssey Sims was good for 47 and Jennifer O'Neill poured in 43 to lead both squads...

The previous high for a Division I women's game was 252 points in SMU's 127-125 win over TCU, also in four overtimes, on January 25, 1997. The two schools combined for 84-of-198 from the floor and 82-of-112 from the foul line on 80 fouls...

Welcome Back, Jack! Taylor Nets 109 For Grinnell...

((HT: Doug Cutchins))

Grinnell College's Jack Taylor scored 109 points going 24-for-48 from 3 in a 173-123 win over Crossroads College. he went 35-for-70 overall in 29 minutes...

29 MINUTES!!!!!!

Taylor has the NCAA record for any level scoring 138 points last November 20th in a 179-104 win over Faith Baptist Bible College.

The only other player to score more than 109 in an NCAA game was Rio Grande's "Bevo" Francis, who had 113 against Hillsdale in 1954.

"Just like last year, I couldn't have done this without my teammates," Taylor told Ted Schultz of Grinnell's sports Information Department postgame. "I give so much credit to them. This truly was a team effort. I'm thankful for the program and the people I have playing with me."

Here's your evidence...

For the season opener this year against the juggernaut Finlandia, Taylor scored 71 points the other night.

Taylor Hall Breaks Gretzky's Record

((HT: Sportsnet))

The Edmonton Oilers star broke something by the total of one second... but that's all you need...

The Great One scored two goals in nine seconds in an Oilers sweater, and Hall did it in one less last night...

The HQ finds this act somewhat impossible, but it was done...
What does that say about the Islanders defense after goals are scored...???

Dunno, but it may not be much since the Isles won 3-2...

Riquna Williams Shocks San Antonio With 51

Which is an NBA record...

Tulsa's Riquna Williams went 17-for-28 from the floor including 8 three pointers. Williams led the Shock past the Silver Stars, 98-65.

Her 51 points beats the previous WNBA record of 47 points set by Diana Taurasi and Lauren Jackson.

Central Arkansas Puts Up 30... In Baseball...

((HT: UCA Athletics/Big League Stew))

Normally, when the HQ talks about the University of Central Arkansas, we're discussing either Scottie Pippen or the purple and black turf they have for the football stadium...

now, we'll talk to you about their baseball prowess... at least on one night...

The Bears played Grambling and the Tigers had a really bad night...

Here's the Purple Bears highlights... and there are a lot of them...

In 12 of their 24 wins, the Bears have score double digits... including a 19 against Mississippi Valley...
In the Tigers game... here's their box score...

Northern Illinois Sets New Record For Bad

((HT: EMUAthletics))

Northern Illinois broke its own NCAA record for being really bad scoring only four points in the first half at Eastern Michigan.

Northern Illinois trailed 18-4 at the half after shooting 1 for 31, including 29 straight misses. Earlier this season, Northern Illinois set the record for fewest points in a first half with five against Dayton back on December 1st.

The Huskies' 3.2 percent field goal percentage in the first half also set a record, breaking Savannah State's 4.3 percent "success rate" against Kansas State on Jan. 7, 2008. Their one made field goal also tied Savannah State's record in that 2008 game.

The Huskies finished the game 8 for 61 from the field for 13.1 percent, another NCAA record. The Huskies finished 1 for 33 from three-point.

The record for fewest points in a game is 20 set by Saint Louis in January 2008.

Here's the highlights, if you're an Eastern Michigan fan, anyway...

It was the first time since December 7th, 2004 that Eastern held an opponent to less than 30 points- beating Rochester College, 89-29. The 25 points given up were also the lowest points EMU has allowed since January 21st, 1943, when they beat Hillsdale College, 61-21.

Bevo Francis, We Knew You Well...

Well, at least those of us who knew our basketball trivia did...

Until tonight, Francis was the record-holder for points in a game with 113 against Hillsdale College in 1954...

Grinnell (IA) College sophomore Jack Taylor scored 138 points in a 179-104 win over Faith Baptist Bible College going 52-for-108 from the floor (27-for-71 from 3-point)

In 36 minutes...

And how in the blue hell is he allowed to put up THAT many shots in 36 minutes...???

That's a shot every 20 seconds...

The old Grinnell record was 89 points by Griffin Lentsch last November 19th against Principia...

Seen below...
((HT: Grinnell Basketball))

And here's Jack scoring some of his 138
