McCarney Back At Work

((HT: WFAA-TV Dallas))

University of North Texas football coach Dan McCarney suffered a stroke on February 12, and these days, his life is almost back to normal. McCarney took the job with the Mean Green to resurrect the program that had hit rock bottom more years than not and was in trouble under Todd Dodge- a heralded Texas high school coach who stepped up in class...

DEVELOPING: Cremins Retires at College of Charleston

((HT: ESPN910 Charleston))

College of Charleston head men's basketball coach Bobby Cremins held a press conference this afternoon to update the school on his absence

He came back to work March 7th with the blessings of his family, but he has decided to retire as coach effective immediately.

In 2006, assuming he would never coach again, the College hired him to succeed Gregg Marshall who had taken the job- only to go to another job.

Cremins went on to thank the players who played for him during his tenure.

"It was unfortunate what happened to me in late January. Our body sometimes send us signals we have to listen to... I'm doing great now, but I feel it's best to step aside and move on to the next chapter of my life."

At the end of January, Cremins took an indefinite medical leave of absence because of "a non-life threatening medical condition." Associate head coach Mark Byington finished the season as the interim head coach.

Cremins says he looks forward to a "happy and healthy future..."

DEVELOPING: Manning A Bronco...??? Whither Smith And Tebow... (UPDATED)

((HT: ESPN))

According to the four-letter, Peyton Manning is heading to Denver- barring something going going kerflooie in contract negotiations with agent Tom Condon.

This way, Alex Smith (another Condon client) could stay with his new BFF, 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh. And it also may mean the end of Tebow-Mania in Denver...

Much to the dismay of all those jersey-wearing Maniacs, unless Tebow gets traded to Jacksonville- which could piss off Chad Henne and/or Blaine Gabbert...

But new Jags owner Shahid Khan needs as many butts in seats as possible...

Here's early discussion on what could be a 5-year, $95-million deal between Peyton and the Broncos...

DEVELOPING: Mets Settle Madoff Numbers For $162M

((HT: MyFoxNY))

The owners of the New York Mets and the trustee trying to recover as much money as they can for victims of Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme settled Monday for $162 million.

The Mets owners will not pay anything for three years- considering they're not the most cash-rich at the moment...

Irving Picard, the court-appointed trustee chasing after the cash, sued the Mets owners, Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz, and anyone he could think of for more than $300 million- so, they end up with a little more than half that number...

The Mets owners, who invested with Madoff for more than 20 years, have said they had no idea about his business dealings and they feel just as played as everyone else.

Here's the latest... or the earliest...

DEVELOPING: Furman Bisher Passes At 93

To say that long-time Atlanta sportswriter Furman Bisher was legendary is putting it mildly...

One of the best wordsmiths around, Bisher leaves us at the age of 93 after suffering what was called a "massive heart attack."

He was someone who could write circles around all of us and covered every event the globe could host short of the Antarctic trek...

Bisher, probably, was there too. He just never wrote about it.

But he was more than a writer and columnist. He was a standard-bearer, along with Jesse Outlar, to give opinions in the days of a two-newspaper town when the city of Atlanta had both the Journal and the Constitution before their merger.

He was unabashedly left-handed and gave scholarships for lefties. He was an encyclopedia of knowledge and memories that spanned 70 years back- dating back 59 years with the Atlanta papers. Bisher would camp out under trees and watch golfers go by as preparation to tell his stories, and would adjust to life after the newspaper by developing his own blog...

But his loss is a deep gap for those coming up in the business- the art of writing loses another artist...

Plain and simple...

Here's a small sample of what he means to the fabric of the state of Georgia and the business... courtesy of Senator Johnny Isakson and his own Youtube channel from 2009...after his health-care discussion...

They were teammates in high school in Ames, Iowa who went their separate ways. Harrison Barnes of North Carolina and Doug McDermott of Crighton.

As Ames High School teammates the pair led the Little Cyclones to a pair of undefeated seasons.

Barnes was the top high school recruit in the country, McDermott was on high way to Northern Iowa but ended up at Creighton where his dad is the head coach.

Here is a feature on the two from WOWT-TV in Omaha, Nebraska.

Creigton and North Carolina is a match-up of two of the highest scoring teams left in the NCAA Tournament. Their stars are a big reason why. McDermott is averaging 23points per game and eight rebounds for the eighth-seeded Blue Jays. Barnes is leading the top-seeded Tar Heels at 17 points.

Harrison Barnes believes the Tar Heels need to be focused against the Blue Jays. (Thanks WRAL-TV
