Not Sports: A Van Halen concert review

Van Halen/Courtesy: Me
Yes, we are well aware that this is a Sports Blog and this isn't necessarily a sports story, but we are guessing that a good portion of you like your music in some form or another.

Last night, The Lovely Bride and I got to see one of favorite music groups from our childhood in concert: Van Halen. And though they certainly looked a lot older and Michael Anthony wasn't there, they sure sounded a lot like they used to.

For those of you unaware, the original lead singer, David Lee Roth is back. And in bits and pieces sounds like his old self. But an older Roth seems to finally have come to grips with the fact that people come to see Eddie Van Halen more so than him and he's seemingly okay with that.

And while Roth, who is in his mid-50's showed flashes of his old self, he at times was also totally lost. He seemed to forget a few of the lyrics...but it really wasn't much of an issue. He had fun, he entertained, and he was well aware that he didn't have all the lyrics down and can't hit the high notes he used to.

By telling you that the old "VH" was one of our favorite groups...and continued to be with whomever sang for them (except that guy from Extreme or Erasure or whatever that group was), we are admitting that we aren't as young as we used to be. TLB and I, well, I guess you can call us somewhat aging hipsters.

We knew we were old when at dinner before the concert, when we mentioned to our waitress we were going to the concert, she responded "Oh...I think my Aunt and Uncle are driving up for that show".

Me and TLB
Thanks. That comment just affected your tip.

But seriously.

It was almost surreal to see the opening act for the show, Kool and the Gang.

Yes, that Kool and the Gang. And with the original cast.

And quite honestly, they weren't bad for what they did. The worked hard. They sold what they were doing. They warmed up the crowd for the headliner. And they were moderately entertaining for the roughly half-full house.

And yes, they really made us feel old.

It was amazing how fast the arena filled up when Van Halen got going. And boy did they get going.

From the opening "Unchained" through "Everybody Wants Some", we never sat down.

However, we, and most of the rest of the arena did sit down when they started playing cuts from their new album, A Different Kind of Truth.

Now mind you, the new stuff isn't bad. It sounds exactly like you would think a Van Halen album in 2012 would sound like. Except at least 2/3rds of the roughly 15,000 in the arena weren't familiar with it.

But that didn't matter.

Eddie Van Halen/Courtesy: Me
Eddie Van Halen hasn't lost his touch. At all. And really, for those of us who were familiar with the group from the start, he's why you come see the band play. He is every bit as good...if not better than he ever was. Seriously, the guy did an 8-minute solo that produced sounds from his guitar you would never imagine a guitar making.

Words cannot describe this.

Alex Van Halen is still Alex Van Halen. The quiet one. His schtick hasn't changed either. His drums drive the group. They always have. And they did last night.

And then their is the new bassist, Eddie's son Wolfgang. No, he isn't Michael Anthony, but the kid is pretty damn good. He's much more subdued than Anthony, basically just playing, moving from the drum set to the stage and doing a pretty good background vocal with his dad.

All-in-all, we had an absolute blast. About a 2-hour show with little rest. My voice is struggling this morning and my ears have a bit of a ring to them, but that's okay. If you are in your 30's or 40's, there is a good chance you are familiar with Van Halen. If you are, get a ticket. It's a bit of nostalgia, its a bit of going back to your childhood. No, it isn't perfect. But for pure entertainment, its an absolute blast.

Go. See. Enjoy. And don't judge.

I didn't shoot this (can't get my video to upload), but here is the opener from last night: (thks YouTube)

Violent NHL Playoffs: A Taiwanese animated take

((ht: puckdaddy))

This is funny, but really, really wrong.

NMA.tv, the Taiwanese group that produces animated videos essentially mocking things sport and others...are now taking on the NHL.

You've all read about the spate of violence running through this years NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, from Aaron Asham to Raffi Torres and others, there have been suspensions, injuries and games that just flat out turned to fights (see: pittsburgh vs. philly)

With that in mind, the folks from Taiwan give their interpretation of the violence mocking it (as it should be)

**Note**--It's kinda bloody in an animated way

SMU And Larry Brown

SMU needed a head coach for the Mustangs men's basketball program. Larry Brown wanted another shot coaching.

Today Larry Brown is the new head coach of the Mustangs

SMU hasn't mattered in men's basketball since the mid-1980's when Jon Koncak was leading the way. SMU hasn't hung a championship banner at Moody Coliseum since 1993 when the Mustangs won the Southwest Conference championship. By the way that's the last time the 'Stangs galloped to the NCAA Tournament.

Larry Brown? His resume looks like a travel itinerary for a traveling salesman.
1972 Davidson
1972-74 Carolina Cougars (ABA)
1974-79 Danver Nuggetts (ABA & NBA)
1979-81 UCLA
1981-83 New Jersey Nets
1983-88 Kansas
1988-92 San Antonio Spurs
1992-93 L.A. Clippers
1993-97 Indiana Pacers
1997-2003 Philadelphia 76ers
2003-05 Detroit Pistons
2005-06 New York Knicks
2008-10 Charlotte Bobcats

Next stop, Dallas, Texas and SMU

SMU Steve Orsini found out that the only candidates for the gig were assistant coaches looking for the stepping stone head coaching job.

With the move to the Big East on the horizon Orsini wasn't impressed with his choices.

Larry Brown was out there and Orsini went after him. The hire has accomplished one thing, the Mustangs became relavent in the Dallas media.

Now Larry Brown, who hasn't coached a college game since Kansas defeated Oklahoma in 1988 for the NCAA Championship, must put the paddles to a program that has flat lined for the last 10 years.

Oh Brown will do just that, he's way too good of a coach to not revive the Mustang fortunes. Brown just won't be around to finish the job. Two to 3 years is about enough to keep Larry Brown's attention.

Brown can lay the foundation of success and in some cases (Kansas and the Detroit Pistons) see it through. Then there's another project to work on.

Steve Orsini will take that. He just bought a whole bunch of publicity for a men's basketball program that wasn't on the radar screen in the Metroplex.

OSG High: Atlanta Area Coach Resigns After Recruiting Accusation

((HT: 11Alive.com Atlanta))

The HQ isn't naive enough to sit there and say that recruiting doesn't go on in high school athletics...

We know it does...

The Georgia High School Association (GHSA) has admitted that they are going to crack down on the problem. The incident below isn't the first in the state recently uncovered. The first was in eastern Georgia in the town of LaGrange at Troup High where head coach Charles Flowers resigned after an accusation of bringing in a player from across the border in Alabama to play for his squad.

The one below is from Shiloh High where head coach Brian Montgomery maintains his innocence after four kids he coached at his old job moved 45 minutes away to be with him at his new gig...

Here's FOSG Sam Crenshaw

Are We Going Back To Ice Edge And PHX...??? Majors Or Minors...???

If you pay attention to Keith McCullough and his Twitter feed...

Super secret: Ice Edge Holdings is not done with The Phoenix Coyotes yet - we love hockey and its fans

Could this be the group that outgoing Glendale owner Elaine Scruggs was talking about that they wanted no part of...???

Arizona Republic beat writer Lisa Halverstadt reports that if the Greg Jamison deal goes through, he would have no problem knocking off a few million dollars from the first-year subsidy from the city- from $20-million to $17-million.

By the way, Halverstadt is mandatory reading...

The issue with all of the subsidies is, currently, the city of Glendale is on the edge of a $35-million budget shortfall for the next fiscal year.

The subsidies are supposed to be $20-million for the first four years and $15-million for the 2017 year.

Councilman Phil Lieberman is asking Tea Party members to show up for the next City Council meeting to protest any kind of subsidy- at all...

But if it's not the NHL and the Coyotes, it may be the minors instead...

Halverstadt came across an (Ice Edge/Lakehead Yale partner) Anthony LeBlanc e-mail from April 1:

He added that the group had “conceptually mapped out” alternative plans for the arena including long-term management of the arena, the purchase of a franchise to replace the Coyotes, a plan to increase the number of events at Jobing.com and a plan to “most benefit (Westgate City Center) and the City of Glendale as a whole.”

LeBlanc said he had talked with the National Hockey League about his plans, and got their approval to pursue the matter in more detail.

All that in order to try and prevent this for the second straight year

Jeff Long's Notes Are Out...

And it appears that he's quite skeptical over the idea that former Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino said that he and Jessica Dorrell "decided to be friends" in February...

Here are Long's notes, thanks to Freedom of Information Act requests and KFSM/5NewsOnline.com

Here are the personnel files of Petrino and Dorrell for good measure, thanks to our friends at KFSM again...

Chancellor G. David Gearhart says in an interview that he was surprised by all of the Petrino stuff...

Q-Stache Gets Fined

For this outburst... and comments he made after the game was over...
((HT: NHL/Fred Murtz/NBCSN))

When Q was asked if he thought he was going to be fined, Quenneville said he didn't think so.

"I was just answering a question," he said.

He got fined $10-grand...

The money will go to the NHL Foundation...

Raffi Torres is still out pending his Friday meeting and Marian Hossa is out for Game 4- at the least... and the HQ thinks the Q-Stache is still pissed...
