Mickelson Hits Righty At Sawgrass 17

((HT: PGA Tour/Golf Channel))

Hey, that's why they call it practice rounds...

Phil Miokelson was paired with Rickie Fowler and Dustin Johnson for his practice round and, when the threesome got to the island green at 17, they decided to have a lot of fun...

Although, you'll never get the HQ to hit a right-handed golf club...
Ever...

Sergio Blows Up Down The Stretch At Players, Tiger Wins

((HT: PGA Tour))

It cost Sergio Garcia around $800,000 going from second to a tie for eighth...
Starting on 17 with two in the water...

Nothing like a 7 on a par 3...

Add to that hitting his tee shot on 18 into the water and Sergio Garcia drops six stokes in a hurry...

Tiger Woods won the tourney by staying dry and it was his first win at Sawgrass since 2001. This is the fastest season that he has ever won four tournaments, and the win was his 78th career- four behind Sam Snead...

The folks over at World of Isaac addressed the fun- and "Yakety Sax" makes it all better...

Sergio Garcia Whines about Tiger Woods Allegedly Distracting Him

We had a name for Sergio Garcia many years ago after he imploded during a round three at the Masters and proceeded to step up to the podium and blame the media for his bad round.

"Whiny Bitch"

That name reared its ugly head again during the 3rd round of The Players Championship when Garcia accused Tiger Woods of costing him a shot on the second hole by pulling a club out of his bag while Garcia was in the middle of his swing. Garcia claims that caused the crowed to gasp audibly, throwing him off.

However...according to all observers and the people watching on TV, it didn't exactly go down like that.

NBC Sports showed a replay that clearly showed Woods pulling his club while Garcia was still standing over and dwelling on his shot. And yes, there was a gasp by the crowd, but again, Garcia had not hit yet.

For his part, Woods didn't say much about it other than: 'Not real surprising he's complaining about something'.

((Video isn't out there as of this posting))

We suppose the premise of the whole thing could have shaken Garcia, but if it did, he...well, needs to man up. Short of someone yelling at him in his backswing, we don't know how such a thing could possibly have distracted him.

But that's Garcia's M.O. he tends to overreact and blame everyone else for his pratfalls and failures and this appears to be another example of it. Yes, he and Woods are tied at 10-under with a couple holes to play in the rain shortened 3rd round, but we fully expect Garcia to gag on Sunday.

It's what he does.

Chris Stroud and the Unitentional Hole-In-One

Sometimes the best golf shots are the ones you don't expect to be successful.

That was the case early in Chris Stroud's round 3 at The Players Championship. He was playing the intimidating Par 3, 13th hole, a hole only aced 3 times in the history of the tournament.

But a well placed 6 iron on the 186 yard hole hit the top right shelf on the green, rolled almost directly left, downhill...and well, lets just say, he's buying drinks today. Stroud finished his round at 6-under.

Harris English Had A Bad Saturday

Here's the man's opening drive as he was part of the last pairing for Round 3
((HT: Golf Channel on NBC/youtube))

Denny Meredith would end up heading to the hospital after getting popped in the pith helmet with the first shot of the day.

English would go from 7-under to even par with his Round 3 7-over 79...

"That was the first time I've ever hit a guy. It was kind of an eye-opening experience," English said. "I've never seen that much blood in a long time ... it was strange. Kind of rattled me for a little bit. [It] wasn't with me for more than a hole or two; it was just a tough break."

He was four-over on the first two holes, but the tour rookie settled down after that.

Day One At The Players

((HT: PGATour.com/GolfChannel))

The HQ would like to admit that it hasn't played the TPC Sawgrass course yet, but it is on the bucket list for business meetings...

Today is the first round of the yearly tourney that they call the "Fifth Major." Part of the fun is the island green on the 17th hole...

Just ask Angel Cabrera- the adventures start at the 1:45 mark...

FOSG Brian Katrek has the recap...

Ian Poulter is your leader at -7 and a lot of big names are in big trouble if they want to make the weekend...
