On Friday, Phil Mickelson was out of control with his driver on the 5th at The Barclays- hitting his drive into the hospitality tents. It gave him a bout of creativity where he his his second from the carpets and, eventually, bogeyed the hole.
This just happened in his third round

So You Can Hit From A Tent, But Not Off Another Green

You can go all Tin Cup like Phil Mickelson did in Round 2 of The Barclays...
He did bogey the hole by the way...
That you can do...
But Seung-Yul Noh's tee shot on the 11th hole landed on the green of the 3rd hole. He could have taken a free drop, but he didn't know that part of the rule...
He then hit is next shot as a chip shot off the green and was assessed a 2-stroke penalty.
Wonder if anyone else will have any other kinds of adventures for the final two rounds...

Reports: Phil Mickelson Part of Insider Trading Investigation--UPDATED

Hmmmm....
Masters champ and PGA Tour golfer Phil Mickelson is one of several interesting names being bandied about during a federal insider trading investigation.
F.B.I and Security and Exchange Commission Investigators are looking into some trades made by Mickelson, a Sports gambler by the name of William T. Waters and possibly investor Carl Icahn.
No charges have been filed, but the investigation began after reports began to surface that Icahn may have shared some insider information with Waters, who passed on the information to Mickelson.
For their part, investigators have not connected Icahn and Mickelson, but the golfer does have some connection to Waters. And Waters is a known and successful Sports gambler who owns a Las Vegas area golf course.

This is interesting. We don't profess to know how investigators will tie all these allegations together but they raise plenty of questions.
For people who don't run in the circles of multi-millionaires like these guys, it wouldn't be a shock that information like this is shared.
But it would be a shock to find out their hero Phil Mickelson could be involved in doing it. There have been whispers for years that Mickelson is or was a heavy gambler, which could easily explain the relationship with Mr. Waters.
It will be very interesting to see if or how this all plays out....
**UPDATE**---Mickelson released a statement Saturday afternoon stating that he has been cooperating with investigators and due to the nature of the investigation, can't talk further about it.
For no real reason, we chose this video of Mickelson...because we don't have a TV News story on this investigation...

The Open Makes Five For Mickelson

A month ago, Phil Mickelson was inconsolable after losing the US Open (again) and finishing second (again- for the 6th time)...
He needed a 66 (5-under) to leapfrog a lot of people and get some key birdies down the stretch that others didn't (see Messrs. Scott, Westwood, and Poulter as examples)... and he now has 5 majors under his belt to tie him with the likes of Byron Nelson for career majors titles...
Not bad company...

The larger questions go to Westwood, Stenson, and Woods...
Can Lee Westwood shake the moniker of "Best ever not to...?"
Is Henrik Stenson ready to win a major...???
And can Tiger Woods adapt his strategy to be on the offensive when trailing in a major instead of waiting for others to back up to trim his margin of error...???
Hopefully, he and his coaches have seen the results and can move his approach accordingly...

Phil Mickelson and the Near 59
Talk about having a good day.
PGA Golfer Phil Mickelson, already recognized as one of the greats playing the game today, added to his legend Thursday at the Phoenix Open.
That's where he nearly went into the record books, shooting an 11-under, 60 to take the early first round lead.
Mickelson had a chance to walk away with a record tying 59, something done only 5 times in PGA Tournament history, but lipped out his birdie putt on the last hole.

O'Malley's to buy Padres with Phil Mickelson as part owner

It appears the O'Malley family is back in the baseball business.
According to multiple reports, former Los Angeles Dodger owner Peter O'Malley, two of his sons and two nephews along with a handful of minority investors are set to buy the San Diego Padres from John Moores. The price, $800 million.
Oh, one of those minority investors, golfer Phil Mickelson.
The Padres have been up for sale for some time and Moores has stated publicly that he'd narrowed the list to just a couple of perspective bidders.
According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the O'Malley's are expected to be approved at an MLB owners meeting next month.

Certainly, the old time MLB owners are happy to welcome the O'Malley's back into the fold. Though it does beg the question as to why they sold the Dodgers back in 1998. Allegedly it was because of a tax issue. The Dodgers team went on a big downhill spiral after the sale, though they were recently bought for $2 billion. Which in the long run would have made him a lot of money.
The Padres and their relatively new park aren't quite worth $2 billion.
It will be interesting to see if they have the finances to make the Padres more competitive. The team has had some marginal success, but always seem to be looking for ways to cut costs. Sometimes at the expense of being competitive.
Maybe O'Malley is trying to go back in time?

Henrik Stenson was having a great 36th birthday until he registered a smowman on 18. Lee Westwood, after a solid back nine, is the first round leader with a bunch of folks in tow at 5-under. Louis Oosthuizen and Peter Hanson are one stroke back. Rory McIlroy is one-under with another bunch of folks. Toger and Fred Couples are even (16 are at level par).
Mickelson finished with a birdie at 18 for a 2-over 74. Larry Mize and Ben Crenshaw are at four-over 76. Tom Watson is 5-over.
The HQ will have the stories as we move forward
