This Flew Under The Radar Screen, Eastern Illinois Upsets San Diego State

With all the FCS school stunners Saturday over the FBS big boys this one out west kind of flew under the radar screen.

Eastern Illinois defeated San Diego State Saturday night 40-19.

Let's just say head coach Rocky Long was not pleased.

See for yourself.

Here's the highlights from the game (It's all good San Diego State plays that's why it's very short.)

Of course the Panthers are thrilled.

“Obviously I’m really happy for the players." Eastern Illinois head coach Dino Babers said. "We just found a way to hang in there. The ball kind of bounced our way.”

EIU out gained SDSU 533 total yards to 440.

What kill San Diego State was turnovers, the Aztecs committed five of them.

OSG High: The Colquitt County Rush Propst

((HT: ESPN))

The HQ covers Colquitt County football every week in our other pair of pants...

We've seen Rush Propst come over from Hoover to Colquitt County (GA) High and return them to being competitive in Region 1-6A all over again with the likes of Valdosta, Lowndes, Camden County, Tift, Coffee, and Brunswick...

He's been through a lot personally and professionally and Wayne Drehs caught up with Rush and his wife, Stefnie, before the Packers game with Propst's old school, Hoover (AL)

Oh, by the way, Colquitt lost to Hoover 24-10.
And Rush being Rush blamed himself- not for something in the game plan, but transportation...

From Wayne Grandy's piece in the Moultrie Observer:

“It was so hot on those buses,” Propst said, adding that many of the players were soaking wet when they reached Auburn for a walk through before continuing on to Hoover. “I should know better.

“We were gassed at halftime,” he said...

Rush also said that he didn't need to make it that easy on Hoover...

The Return Of The Marching 100

((HT: ESPN))

Before the MEAC/SWAC Showdown in Orlando, the Florida A&M University band- the "Marching 100"- took the field for the first time on almost two years after being banned after the hazing death of band major Robert Champion.

FAMU's interim president, Larry Robinson, released this statement in announcing their return:

"This band will be a model of excellence for other bands across this nation. It will actually focus on its founding principles of character, academics, leadership, marching and service," Robinson said. "When you look at all these actions that we've taken in total, we are fairly confident that we are about to launch a new era and a new understanding and appreciation as to why hazing is not necessary to advance these principles."

Here's their pre-game return...

Fifteen band members were charged with manslaughter and felony hazing in Champion's death two years ago. Seven have accepted pleas. One more has pleaded, but hasn't been sentenced. The rest are still awaiting trial.

But Champion's mom thinks it's still too soon for the band to get back on the field...

"I do believe that it's too soon,"Pam Champion said. "I don't see anything that's different to ensure the safety of those students. Everything that has been put in place is not something that was done voluntarily."

The Champions think the return is looking at the money that can be gained by reinstating the 100 and having them perform.

So, Why Does Kirk Ferentz Still Have A Job...???

((HT: WHO-TV))

Because he has a four-million dollar per year deal that has him coaching through 2020

Kirk Ferentz has a contract through January 31, 2020, that pays him between $1.87M and $2.07M per season in base salary, plus another $1.48M per season in "recurring supplemental payments."

He also gets a "longevity bonus" which requires Iowa AD Gary Barta pay him between $325,000 and $575,000 on an escalating scale throughout the balance of his deal...

In the year 2020...

The buyout clause in Kirk Ferentz's contract mandates that Barta pay him 75% of his base salary if he is terminated without cause- $219,142 per month until the contract ends in January 2020.

He is the state's highest paid employee, making $1.4 million more than the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics director Jean Robillard.

Oh, Iowa lost to Northern Illinois yesterday...
Here's the highlights...

So, why is Kirk Ferentz still employed...???

He's too expensive to fire...

ICYMI: Notre Dame Wins Game Loses Spellcheck

((ht: yahoosports/docsaturday))

Ooopsie....

It's a good thing spelling doesn't count in football.

Take a look at the photo to the right....what do you see wrong with it?

Yeah.

Pretty funny. It's a good thing the Fig-Thing Irish were better on the field as they beat the Temple Owls 28-6 behind Tommy Rees's 3 touchdown passes.

However, these days nobody gets a pass on mis-spelliings, including the company who made these stadium cups...

CFB Shocker: EWU Eagles Soar Over Oregon State

Kansas State now has some company in the room of being upset by a FCS school in your home opener.

Saturday it was Eastern Washington that stunned the Oregon State fans in Corvallis by defeating the Beavers 49-46.

Sophomore quarterback Vernon Adams, who had 518 yards of total offense, punched it in the end zone with 18 seconds left to put the Eagles on top for good.

Oregon State kicker Trevor Romaine had a chance to tie it but his field goal attempt sailed wide right.

“This is a huge win." Eastern Washington head coach Beau Baldwin said. "We aren’t talking about an average team, we are talking about a bowl team and a big-time opponent that is well-coached. It took every ounce of every minute in this sucker to get it done.”

Eagle quarterback Vernon Adams deserved the game ball.  Adams threw for 411 yards and rushed for 107.

He was doing it with his legs and making all the right decisions." Baldwin said. "That was the thing I loved about it. He was making all of these plays, but he was also taking care of the football and being smart when he needed to."

“You don’t really prepare for something like that and we were a step behind." Oregon State head coach Mike Riley said. "He was eluding tackles, which I think was a major factor in the game, the number of tackles that he made us miss and number of missed opportunities we had to sack him. And then there were the big plays he made. Early in the game he set the tone for how the rest of the game went.”

Oregon State will host Hawaii in Corvallis next Saturday.
