Pitt Announces AD Fired as Coach Leaves for Wisconsin

Well, if Pitt was looking to troll Wisconsin for hiring its now former head coach Paul Chryst they may have succeeded.

As the Badgers were announcing the return of native son Chryst, the Panthers announced his boss, now former AD Steve Pederson was fired.

The report--originally reported by Brett McMurphy of ESPN, doesn't give a reason for Pederson's departure and several other reports state he'd been interviewing potential coaching candidates as recently as Tuesday night.

Several rumors have circulated that former Rutgers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano had interest in the coaching job and several others have said he's the leading candidate. Pederson's departure may accelerate the move.

Pitt has already named an interim replacement for Pederson. Dr. Randy Juhl, Vice President of Compliance will oversee the athletic department until a replacement is named.

As for the football team, offensive coordinator Joe Rudolph will handle the team through the Armed Forces Bowl on January 2nd.

Paul Chryst Named Coach at Wisconsin

((ht: host.madison.com))

We first told you about this story last week. But Wisconsin couldn't "officially" hire now former Pitt Panthers coach Paul Chryst until they fulfilled the legal requirement of having the job posted for a week.

The Badgers have a 6pm (Central) press conference scheduled where Chryst will be introduced. And like we said in the above paragraph, it's not a surprise to anyone.

Chryst grew up in Madison. He played for the team in the late 80's and got his coaching start with the Badgers. He was the teams offensive coordinator from 2005-2011.

Chryst had a tough job rebuilding Pittsburgh after some tough years. He had a 19-19 record with the Panthers in 3 seasons.

He'll replace Gary Andersen who left after 2 seasons to jump over to Oregon State. That move surprised many people, but Andersen claimed it was because of the lack of support by administration that caused the move.

Wisconsin plays Auburn in the Outback Bowl.

Reports: Paul Chryst to Get Wisconsin Job

((ht: jsonline.com))

It didn't take long for the University of Wisconsin to find someone to replace departed coach Gary Andersen. Andersen left Madison earlier this week to take the open coaching job at Oregon State.

Reports circulating out of Wisconsin say that soon-to-be former Pittsburgh Panthers head coach Paul Chryst has accepted the job.

Chryst has been at Pitt for the past three seasons with a 19-19 record, but the Panthers have shown great improvement each season.

It should be noted he is a Wisconsin grad and a long time Badgers assistant when the opportunity opened up in Pittsburgh. Armed with head coaching experience, he should be a good fit for the folks in Madison.

Here's the original story on the move from The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

The move also opens up the Pittsburgh job. The Panthers are all in on the ACC at this point and it should be a fairly attractive opening for whomever takes it.

It should be noted that Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez posted the job just yesterday, the guess is he already had his man (Chryst) ready to roll.

Ha! West Virginia and the Eat #$%! Pitt Version of Sweet Caroline

((ht: thebiglead.com))

Oh, this is rich....those wacky West Virginia Mountaineers had a little fun when the ESPN College Gameday cameras stopped rolling this past Saturday morning before their game with TCU.

While in the midst of a rollicking/large crowd version of that perennial Neil Diamond fan favorite, "Sweet Caroline"...a few words got changed.

And it made reference to the Mountaineers arch rivals from just up the river---The Pittsburgh Panthers.

The Gameday crew also seemed to get a good laugh at it....

Pitt Blows Wake Out of ACC Tourney: Is This the End for Bzdelik?

The University of Pittsburgh quickly ended Wake Forest's ACC Tourney run with a 84-55 blowout win Thursday afternoon.

And no sooner than the end of the game, the speculation on the future of Wake head coach Jeff Bdzelik hit overdrive.

Sources tied to the Demon Deacons tell OSG Sports Bdzelik is likely to step down from the job within the next couple of days.

After going 17-16 this year, the Deacon fan base and alumni have grown quite impatient. Mind you, they ran off Dino Gaudio after going 61-31 with 2 NCAA Tourney bids in three years.

Bzdelik hasn't been even close to that.

While Wake showed some spark beating Notre Dame Wednesday in their ACC opener, they were down 14 to Pitt by halftime and never got any closer.

Already, there is speculation Wake will run at Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall, though our question is at this point is Wake a better job?

Others who may be in:

Dr. Brett Reed – Lehigh:  This could be a great fit.  Reed has led the Mountain Hawks to two NCAA tournament appearances including the upset of Duke in the first round in 2012.  Lehigh has a similar academic makeup as Wake Forest.

Mike Lonergan – George Washington:  Another solid candidate who has had some success at Vermont and has rebuilt the program at G.W.  Lonergan won’t wow the fan base but he appears to be a good fit as well.

Shaka Smart – Virginia Commonwealth:  Is this the right program to get Smart out of the mid-majors to the ACC?   Smart has $1.5 million guaranteed annually from VCU and his contract runs through 2028.  Looks like Smart might be content in Richmond.

Tommy Amaker – Harvard:  He’s a Mike Krzyzewski protégé who’s rehabbed his coaching career at Harvard after a mediocre tenure at Michigan.  Would Amaker be willing to go up against his mentor each year?

Tubby Smith – Texas Tech:  He has ties to North Carolina.  Smith played at High Point University and was a high school coach in the Tar Heel State.  Smith is 62 years old and has a great resume but he just finishing his first year at Texas Tech so the timing may not be right.  Smith would be worth pursuing though.

Mike White – Louisiana Tech: Has won conference championships the last two years ( 2013 WAC, 2014 C-USA) and is considered a hot commodity within the coaching circles.   White coaches a fast tempo offensive game and a tight man to man defense.  I’m willing to bet White is on top of the list.

And finally--

Bobby Hurley – Buffalo: In his first year as head coach Hurley has led the Bulls to the MAC Eastern Division title.  Hurley has a legacy in the ACC.  It would be a high risk/high reward type of move but one Wake Forest might need to make.
Ben Howland – Former UCLA head coach:  To old, too much baggage.
Bobby Lutz – NC State assistant coach:  Lutz can coach and got the max out of his players during his tenure as the head coach at Charlotte.  Would hiring Lutz excite the fan base?

Stay tuned, the College Basketball Carousel has only just begun...

Tyler Ennis Saves Syracuse At The Buzzer. Jim Boeheim Had No Doubt The Shot Was In

((HT: ESPN/ACCDN))

A lot of people thought that, if Syracuse was going to lose a game in the near future, it was going to be this game in Pittsburgh against the Panthers...

But someone forgot to tell Tyler Ennis

They beat Pitt 58-56 and Ennis finished with 13 and Syracuse stays unbeaten.

Luck may have had been in the cards when Ennis put up the jumper but Jim Boeheim's interpretation his freshman guard captured the moment.

"You have to do it." Boeheim said.  "You have to make the play. The ball goes in. That’s not luck. He took the shot and he made the shot. He didn’t throw it from half-court or three-quarters court. That’s not lucky. He dribbled it up, he had a purpose, he got up in the air and he took a good shot, and it went in. It happens sometimes, but he was poised to do it."

Boeheim had no doubt Ennis' shot was good with the ball left his hand.

"When he shot it, I saw his release, and when I saw the ball, I thought it was going in."  Boeheim said. "Honestly, I said, 'That’s going in.' It could’ve rimmed out very easily, but when he shot it I thought, 'Yeah, that’s going to go in.”

The Orange is now 24-0 and looking like a special team come March

BUZZER BEATER: Brogdon's 3 Silences Pitt's Oakland Zoo, Big Win For Virginia

Sometimes things that don't work in practice some how do in a game.

Virginia head coach Tony Bennett installed a new play for end of game situations and wasn't that thrilled with it.

The Cavaliers tried it at the end of the game against Pittsburgh Sunday afternoon.  Malcolm Brogdon took the shot and hit it at the buzzer.

(Thanks ESPN) Note: Brogdon's game winner occurs at :54.

"We actually didn’t run the play right." Brogdon said.  "It wasn’t a triple-pop; we ran a quadruple-pop. We ran four screens instead of three. It’s basically a play for me to come up and shoot the three. We executed it really well. I haven’t hit it one time in practice all year. We’ve been practicing it all the time and I hit it today.”

"It’s funny we run it a lot in practice, but we never make it in practice." Virginia head coach Tony Bennett said. "I would rather make it the game than in practice."

"The kid hit a tough shot," Pitt coach Jamie Dixon said. "He was going sideways and hit it from 25 feet. He made the play."

"(Malcolm Brogdon) hit a good shot." Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon said.  "It was a deep shot, it was a deep three.  We could have guarded it better, but we didn’t.  And we give him credit."

Brogdon led the Cavaliers with 16 points.

Pitt Pulls Off The Upset Of Notre Dame 28-21

When you throw a pair of interceptions in the fourth quarter of a close football game it usually results in a loss.

Notre Dame quarterback Tommy Rees threw two picks each by Pitt's Ray Vinopal that helped the Panthers rally to a 28-21 upset of the Irish.

"Our mantra is you can't start winning until you stop losing and we did things tonight that caused losing," Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said.

It wasn't just Rees interceptions that doomed the Irish, two Pitt touchdown drives were extended because of Notre Dame penalties.

Then Pitt quarterback Tom Savage fumbled the ball in the fourth quarter but Notre Dame couldn't pounce on the loose ball and the Panthers recovered.

"It was just a lapse, a bunch of inexperienced guys out there not seeing that they should have been on the ball.” Kelly said.

Savage was extremely efficient completing 22  of 35 passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns both to Devin Street.

He wasn't perfect." Pitt head coach Paul Chryst said., "I thought he made some big throws. He competed and that kind of rubs off on the rest of the team. I thought he did a lot of good things."

"Our offensive line and running backs did a great job of really running the ball down there and it made it easy for the team and to control the clock." Savage said.  "It was fun."

Savage and the rest of his teammates had fun because not only was Heinz Field rockin' Saturday night but Pitt ended a three game losing streak to Notre Dame.

Paul Chryst finally has his signature win as Pitt's head coach.

"That was a good win." Chryst said. "We were able to do enough things tonight to win. It was a great atmosphere and it was fun. I know it fueled our kids."

Big Numbers, Big Whoop...Louisville, Miami, Baylor, Pitt

Ranked versus Unranked led to a 17-0 spread and an average score of 47-11...

Some people like it for the idea of getting your back-ups the chance to get reps- just in case...
Others think it's tiresome...

Baylor beat Louisiana-Monroe 70-7 and no one wants to play Baylor
((HT: KWTX-TV))

Iowa put up 59 against a directional Michigan school while Michigan actually just survived a UConn road game...

Savannah State picked up another paycheck traveling to Miami to get whacked by Miami 77-7. The spread was 60 and they covered...

“I know that I can change a program like this,” first-year Savannah State coach Earnest Wilson said. “We aspire to be big-time. A game like this helps us judge where we are. The only difference is depth. I know I have to go out and recruit and get some guys like they have.”

Savannah State got $375,000 for taking the trip to Miami, plus another chance to line up against a ranked program. The game was shortened in the fourth quarter. Wilson and Miami’s Al Golden talked at halftime and agreed to trim 3 minutes off the final quarter.

“I’ve been there,” Golden said. “I’ve been on the other side of those at Temple. He was trying to teach his team how to keep fighting. I’ve been in his shoes.”

Here's the highlights...

In Louisville, Teddy Bridgewater threw four touchdown passes and Louisville's defense allowed a school-record 30 yards, helping the seventh-ranked Cardinals blow out Florida International 72-0. It was the highest scoring game for the Cardinals since a 73-10 victory over Murray State in 2007. It also matched the school's fifth-largest margin of victory.

And in a game that, actually, was entertaining about it...
Pitt and Duke went after each other to the tune of a 58-55 shootout where the Panthers had to run out the clock on the ground...

What this says about Coach Cut and the Duke defense, the HQ doesn't really know... but there should be reason for optimism with the offense...

So Much For The Big East Being Worth Something

There was the prevailing idea that Louisville and Rutgers would be making some kind of statement: what that statement is... the HQ has no real clue... but some kind of statement about their place in the Bee-Cee-Ess...

So much for that idea- on both fronts...and Charlie Strong's viability during Silly Season may have taken a hit...

First, Teddy Bridgewater played with a broken bone in his wrist... which the HQ gives him due props for... But UConn beat Louisville in overtime- which will send the Cardinals plummeting in the rankings...
((HT: ESPN))

And, then, Pitt scored 21 unanswered in the second on their way to a 27-6 upset of Rutgers- who was ranked 21st at the time of the opening kickoff...

Pitt, still left in some shambles from the Hurricane Todd Graham era, had to have Paul Chryst pick up some pieces... the Panthers, behind Ray Graham, are now 5-6...

Luck Of The Irish Against Pitt... Blah, Blah, Blah...

((HT: WNDU-TV South Bend))

The HQ, when we found out about how this game ended, called FOSG Mark Harmon and called him the luckiest Ess-Oh-Bee on the planet...

Y'see...

Mark is a Notre Dame alum. And while he's not a fan of Brian Kelly (the adjectives he has used in reference to his personality have not been flattering), he's always a fan of his alma mater and their on-the-field activities this season...

The HQ actually had them going 10-2- losing to Oklahoma and USC...

So much for that first thought... all that's left is the game out west late in the year...

This had all the looks of a signature win for Paul Chryst...three starters brought up on charges, circling the wagons, getting out to an early lead and an apparent dominance on both sides of the ball against The Irish...

So much for that idea...

Down 20-12 late in the fourth quarter, Kelly's Heroes scored to send the game to overtime where they came back for a 29-26 win in the third extra frame

Here's the post-game/news report...
WNDU Video on Demand -

It's the school's best start since 1993... and, to be perfectly honest, it looks like they'll be in the discussion- whatever the discussion is... for quite some time to come...

How exciting for you...

Three Pitt CFB Starters Arrested

((HT: KDKA-TV))

Not what new head coach Paul Chryst needed heading into the Notre Dame game or anything...starters whose legal status is in question...

Running back Ray Graham, defensive back Lafayette Pitts and wide receiver Devin Street are all facing charges of assault and conspiracy in connection with an alleged incident on October 21st in the Pittsburgh suburb of Oakland.

A man by the name of Karl Olsheski alleges that the three football players approached and eventually surrounded him while he was walking down the street with two women. The complaint alleges that Graham made a comment toward Olsheski. Street then, allegedly, punched Olsheski in the head.

The three received summonses to appear for a preliminary hearing January 9th. No word from campus if Chryst has (or will) discipline the three leading up to the game tomorrow.

WPXI-TV's story from the early morning is hyah...

Another Unexplainable Loss By Virginia Tech. Pitt-iful Loss To Panthers 35-17

Virginia Tech wins 10 or more games but there is always the one loss each year that causes Hokie fans to say “WTF.”
This time it happened at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh as the Virginia Tech lost to the Pitt Panthers 35-17, the same Panther team that lost to Youngstown State from the FCS Missouri Valley Football Conference to open the season.

“It was just their day.”  Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer said. “I think we’ll learn from this and become a better football team. We’ve got to play better, defense and offense, we’ve got to play better. But they deserve all the credit.”
Frank Beamer is glad Pittsburgh isn’t in the ACC yet, next year it will count as a conference loss as the Panthers join the ACC next season.

The loss also ends Virginia Tech’s 13 game true road winning streak which was the nations best.
Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas threw for 265 yards and a touchdown but threw a career high three interceptions.

“They’re a good defense.” Thomas said. “They’re strong, they’re physical, they’re fast, and they make you make mistakes. They did that today and that’s why they won the game.”
That Pitt defense gave up only 59 rushing yards to Virginia Tech.  Logan Thomas was the Hokies leading rusher with 28 yards.

Here’s the game highlights from Pitt LiveWire:

What a way for Paul Chryst to get his first win as Pittsburgh head coach, defeating the most successful ACC team the past eight years Virginia Tech, the conference your program joins next year.
“It was one day against a very good Virginia Tech team and we made enough plays to win.” Chryst said. “We have to keep going.”

TWTW: More Upsets In Memphis, Houston, Pittsburgh, and Berkeley

((HT: WREG-TV Memphis)

40,000 fans were in attendance at the Liberty Bowl as Tennessee-Martin visited the Tigers from the Ohio Valley Conference...

And after a 2:40 rain delay, it wasn't good news for the home team- and they were the ones handing out the check... they lost to the Skyhawks 20-17...

Here's a story about the weather since, the game was secondary to the home team. The HQ is sure that Tigers fans would rather see the story below instead of highlights...

Texas State shocked the University of Houston 30-13 for the school's first win in the FBS. Cougs QB David Piland is not Case Keenum as he went 17 of 44 for 211... remember he went 2-6 as the starter when Keenum went down in 2010.

Congrats to Coach Dennis Franchione and everyone in San Marcos...

Youngstown State wasn't given much of a chance against Pitt and their new head coach Paul Chryst, except by Brother Marty The Penguin Grad naturally, but the Pens went into Heinz Field and won 31-17...

The fans, naturally, were out of their tree...
((HT: WKBN-TV Youngstown, MyValleySports.com))

And it was a day for ribbon cutting and celebrating the new stadium on campus, but Nevada had more ideas- including a score with 36 seconds left to beat the Bears in Berkeley...

Here's a look at the new barn...

Stefphon Jefferson ran for 145 yards in the 31-24 win for the Wolf Pack in Cal's first home game in 21 months...

ICYMI: Pitt to leave early for ACC just like Syracuse

Okay, this makes a little more sense.

The University of Pittsburgh will join Syracuse in paying the Big East $7.5 million so they can move to the ACC beginning July 1st of 2013.

That would be a year earlier than originally announced and $12.5 million less than the fools at West Virginia paid to leave the Big East this year for the Big 12.

Pitt used that as their argument for an early departure and it did get the Big East to sit down and discuss options.

The announcement comes just two days after Syracuse announced they'd be leaving as well.

Oh...and in case you are interested, the Big East also announced Out of the Kindness in their Hearts, they are dropping their $5 million suit against TCU for leaving before the started in the conference.

TCU had a change of heart and committed to the Big 12 instead.

Sounds vaguely like an episode of that Bachelor show, doesn't it?

Just Sue Baby! Big East Files Suit On A "Non-Member" TCU

HT: Bloomberg.com

A few years ago TCU announced their intentions to leave the Mountain West Conference and join the Big East Conference.  After years of non-AQ status the Horned Frog program wanted AQ status.
That was before the Big Ten expanded by one school (Nebraska) but caused a chain reaction of conference shuffling that left the Big East on life support in football.
West Virginia gone, Syracuse and Pittsburgh one foot out the door and heading to the ACC.  Suddenly the move to the Big East didn’t look so good.
When the Big 12 Conference came a calling TCU charged its mind and accepted the Big 12’s invitation last October.
Now the Big East wants pay back.
The conference filed a complaint in federal court in Washington D.C. Monday that TCU had committed to pay $5 million if it failed to follow through with the membership agreement reached on Nov. 29, 2010.
The complaint alleges, “The Big East made demand for the payment owed under the agreement, but Texas Christian University has refused to make that payment or acknowledge its obligation to do so,”
TCU said in a statement regarding the Big East’s lawsuit, “TCU administrators were surprised by this lawsuit and believe it is premature. The University is hopeful for an amicable resolution of this matter.”
The Big East Conference has the right to force a member institution who wants to leave for another conference to wait 27 months before exiting.
The question is was TCU ever a member of the Big East even though the Horned Frogs intended to join but changed their mind.
That 27 month waiting period is currently being legally challenged by Pittsburgh.  Pitt has sued the Big East complaining that the 27 month waiting period is unenforceable after West Virginia left the conference last year and immediately joined the Big 12 this year after a $20 million settlement.
Pittsburgh as well as Syracuse have accepted invitations to the ACC.  Pitt wants to join for the 2013-12 academic year and is suing for that right to move on and is seeking monetary damages.
I hope the Big East Conference has enough cash on hand to pay their legal fees.

WVU to Big 12 Official, 'Cuse and Pitt still stuck in Big East

((ht: cbssports/mcmurphy))

West Virginia's exit from the Big East is now done.

CBSSports.com's Brett McMurphy reports that the school and the Big East have reached a settlement and the conference has agreed to allow the Mountaineers to leave July 1st of this year.

Of course...there was a financial price to be paid...roughly $20 million.

McMurphy says half will come from the school, the Big 12 will float a $10 million loan to the school for the other half.

Read the full report on cbssports.com RIGHT HERE

Good thing West Virginia has all that money just lying around to pay for the move. Of course none of it will have an impact on the cost of going to school there for non-football students now...will it?

The move now leaves Pitt and Syracuse as the Big East's "Lame Ducks". Both schools have announced their intention to play in the ACC as late as 2014. And the Big East is trying to extort the same amount of money from both schools.

Don't expect them to pay it.

Yeah, they'll pay some money to the conference...though again, it is a form of extortion. And unfortunately, it will be funded by we are guessing a combination of an increase in student fees and tuition increases.

But they'll get to play in the ACC so that makes it all worth it.

While we understand parts of Galactic Realignment, we just think it's wrong...especially in this current economic climate where schools and states are pleading poverty on a regular basis...to dole out tens of millions of dollars just so they can play in what they "Perceive" to be a better sports conference.

Just our 2-cents.

West Virginia to sue Big East: Why aren't Pitt and Syracuse doing this?

((ht: cbssports.com))

Interesting. We are a bit surprised Pittsburgh or Syracuse hasn't already moved to do this.

According to report on cbssports.com, West Virginia University is filing a lawsuit against the Big East Conference so they can leave the conference at the end of the academic year.

Big East rules stipulate that any school intending to leave the conference must pay a $5 million fee and give....get this, 27 months notice before they will be released.

WVU has already paid the league half of the exit fee, and last week when they announced they were leaving, stated they would be playing in the Big 12 next season.

The other two schools who are leaving, Pitt and Syracuse, have been pretty mum...at least publicly about their intentions.

Read the entire CBSSports.com story RIGHT HERE

We believe this is absurd on several levels and find it hard to believe that any judge is going to force WVU or the other schools to stick around for another 2-years plus before they leave.

The Big East should be happy they are getting the payday for it.

We think that after Tuesday's league meetings in Philadelphia, where it is expected they will announce or plan to add 6 new schools, this all will be a moot point. With 6 new teams, the league doesn't need the three that are leaving. Though we think Pitt and Syracuse joining the West Virginia suit would help matters proceed.

That being said, where are ya Panthers and Orange, are your administrators serious? Or not?

ACC adds Pitt and Syracuse, sends Big East scrambling

It's official.

The ACC has accepted applications from the University of Pittsburgh and Syracuse, sending the Big East Conference into panic mode - trying to replace two of their cornerstone members.

Richard Broadhead, Duke president and also the head of the ACC Council, said, "Both schools are committed to competing at the highest level of academics and athletics. We welcome them as full partners in the ACC."

Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford commented, “[adding Pitt and Syracuse] geographically bridges our footprint between Maryland and Massachusetts.

Pittsburgh Chancellor Mark Nordenberg said that school officials "could not envision a better conference home for Pitt."

Syracuse chancellor Nancy Cantor - no relation to OSG Brother Phil - was quoted as saying, "'Cuse is looking forward to bringing ACC games to the Big Apple." The Orange was a founding member of the Big East, and had been a part of the conference since 1982.

This is a very significant day for all of our student-athletes, coaches and staff at the University of Pittsburgh,” said Steve Pederson, University of Pittsburgh Director of Athletics. “The strength and quality of the ACC is highly regarded by everyone at Pitt. When we set high expectations for our student-athletes in their academic, athletic and personal goals, it is important to provide every opportunity and resource to enable that success. Joining the ACC and the outstanding institutions in this conference will give every Pitt student-athlete the chance to achieve their highest aspirations.

The ACC scheduled a 9:30 a.m. ET teleconference with the media to announce the additions. It is not clear which division each of the new schools will join.

The additions of Pitt and Syracuse make sense, in geographic terms, for the ACC. The name Atlantic Coast Conference now means a lot more, because there are teams in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New York - the majority of the Atlantic seaboard.
