Sixteen seconds into Wednesday night's Phildelphia 76ers game versus the Minnesota Timberwolves, the game was stopped because both teams were playing to the wrong baskets.
Which is when the world knew something strange was happening.
A couple hours later, it ended, and something strange did happen. The Sixers won a game. After starting the season 0-17, the Sixers finally got the proverbial monkey off their back and walked away with the 85-77 win, a mere one game from tying an NBA record for futility.
The win moved the Sixers, widely regarded as the worst team in the NBA to 1-17, and keeps them as worthy challengers to the all-time worst season record in NBA history, also held by the Sixers at 9-73.
Michael Carter-Williams did his job for Philly, scoring 20 points with 9 rebounds and 9 assists while Robert Covington chipped in 17 in support.
The Timberwolves, chasing the Sixers for worst record at 4-13, had 4 guys in double figures, but all in the teens.

Morning Wrap: Sixers Lose 17th Straight Game--Barely
The Philadelphia 76ers continued their losing ways Monday night, dropping a close game at home to the San Antonio Spurs.
The final score was 109-103, but it should be noted the Spurs played without their two best players, Tony Parker and Tim Duncan. Third wheel Manu Ginobilli only played 12 minutes.
But all that meant is that it was time for Kawhi Leonard to shine.
Leonard had 26 points and 10 rebounds leading the Spurs to their 13th win of the season.
For the Sixers, quite possibly the worst team in NBA history, it's their 17th straight loss which puts them just a game away from tying an NBA record. They were led Monday night by Michael Carter-Williams who scored 24 points and had 11 boards.
They face Minnesota Wednesday and could break the record with a game against Oklahoma City at the end of the week.

Ooops! Bucks Sanders Nearly Scores for Opponent

Haha! This would've been almost as good as a wrong way fumble in football. And had Milwaukee Bucks center Larry Sanders gone ahead and scored for the Philadelphia 76ers late in their game, it might have cost them the game.
Sanders ended up with the ball near the Sixers basket after a jump ball, turned with a drop step and began to lay the ball up towards the basket. He must have realized what he was doing, because he stopped in mid-move and passed the ball to a teammate.
But perhaps the best part--the replay showing the reaction of Bucks coach Jason Kidd and the slightly embarrassed look given by Sanders.

Just Don't Call Them The 26'ers Anymore...

His Philadelphia26'ers76'ers team DID actually win another game this NBA season...
And it wan't even that close...
It was a 123-98 win over Detroit and will keep Philly as a part of history instead of making it on their own...
Thaddeus Young and Michael Carter-Williams scored 21 points each. Henry Sims added 16 points. And, frankly, the HQ can't remember the last time the team scored 70 in the first half- leading by 19 at 70-51. The Sixers led by 30 at one point- after the third quarter.
Their previous largest margin of victory this season was 15 against the Cavaliers on November 8th.

Sixers Tie Record With 26th Straight Loss: It Wasn't Close
How much would it suck being on a professional sports team and lose 26 straight games?
That's a question Philadelphia 76ers fans and players are asking themselves today after the Sixers got blown out....again.
The Houston Rockets sent Philly to their record tying loss with a 120-98 win Thursday night in Houston.
Just to emphasize how bad the Sixers are, their last win came in January.
James Harden had a triple-double for the Rockets, while James Anderson managed to score nearly 1/3 of Philly's points himself, tallying 30 on the night.
The loss puts the Sixers record at 15-57, which oddly, even if they lose out this season, won't give them the worst all-time record in NBA history.
That honor belongs to a much older Philadelphia 76ers team that went 9-73 back in the early 1970's.
And while everyone involved with this years team says they aren't tanking to grab the top pick in next years draft, they aren't doing themselves or their fans any good by just being outmanned night in and night out either.

OSG High: Sixers Sign Down's Syndrome HS Student To Contract

The HQ showed the efforts of Kevin Grow a few days ago...
He is the Pennsylvania high schooler with Down's Syndrome who hit four three-pointers on Senior Night for Bensalem (PA) High School. Because of his efforts on and off the court, the Sixers are signing him to a two-day contract where he will take part in a team's practice, eat dinner with the team, and get some SIxers gear out of the deal.
When the Sixers host the Cavaliers on Tuesday, Grow gets a jersey, his own locker in the locker room, and will stand with his new teammates for the National Anthem.

Speights Gets MVP Serenade In Sixers Blowout... Or "Can Someone Shoot The Sixers?"

And, no, the HQ doesn't mean that the Sixers can't shoot...
We mean, can someone put them out of their misery...
The 45 point loss to the Clippers followed by the 123-80 loss to the Warriors last night...
We guess their next loss will be by only 41 at this rate...
It was a cool evening for one of the reserves for Golden State. Marreese Speights dropped a career-high 32 off the bench and the crowd serenaded him thusly... as well they should have...
But he told Ric Bucher that he never... EVER... had a night like last night on the floor before...
Now, the irony...
Speights was a Sixers draft pick originally. And Philly became just the second team in NBA history to lose two straight games by at least 40 points each- joining the 1993-94 Sixers...

BUZZER BEATER: Sixers Evan Turner Ends Philly's Losing Ways For Now In Overtime
Philadelphia 76er fans have not had a lot to cheer about this season and coming into Friday night's game against the Brooklyn Nets had lost seven games in a row.
Evan Turner put an end to that losing streak with a buzzer beating layup that you swear tried not to go in the basket. Lady luck was on the Sixers side.

"It felt like it bounced 150 times, man. It was up there" Turner said. "I was just thinking about my reaction if it didn’t go in and who I was going to punch, you know?"
Turner led the Sixers with 29 points and added 10 rebounds.
Philadelphia was determined to go to the basket aggressively during the game in that tactic payed off in the end with Turner's game winner.
That may also help the 76ers psychologically.
"We needed to get that win for the sanity of the group." Sixers head coach Brett Brown said.
It was an insane ending last night for Philly.

At Least, Bynum Can Flamenco

Cafe de Chinita, a restaurant in Madrid, put out this video the other day...
Beyondthebuzzer put it out...
Andrew Bynum, who caused so much headaches with his hairstyles, his lack of bowling skills, and his knees while visiting Philadelphia (the HQ won't say "playing" there because he never did...) decided he was good enough to flamenco in this cafe on vacation...
At least he's good enough for dancing...
Could it be "considered" rehab...???
Biggest question is: Will anyone pick up the UFA this off-season...???

Bynum And His Hair May Not Play This Year

Sixers inactive center Andrew Bynum, who is earning more than $16 million this season, will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. The Sixers hold his “Larry Bird” rights and therefore can pay him more than any other team. But the team has to wonder whether or not they really want to sign him with all the issues he's had on the floor...
It's, probably, good riddance and don't let the door hit you on the way out...
And, now, city officials are raising eyebrows...
DA Seth Williams even responded to a Tweet by the Philly Inquirer's John Mitchell when the news broke by sending a Tweet of his own:
@JmitchInquirer how much is he getting paid? Do I need to launch a grand jury investigation?
@SheridanScribe @jmitchinquirer it could be fraud, theft of services or robbery. Fans and ticket buyers need to know. 10-9-8-76ers!

DEVELOPING...??? D-12 Deal Finally Done...??? (UPDATED)
We can only think that this is, in fact, true...
It looks like, according to Marc Stein and various other "sources" close to Stein and everyone else in Bristol, the Dwight Howard deal might be like this...
And if it is, in fact, true... we can all go back to our lives...
Dwight Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers
The Denver Nuggets will get Andre Iguodala
The Philadelphia 76ers will get Andrew Bynum and Jason Richardson
The Orlando Magic will get Arron Afflalo, Al Harrington, Nikola Vucevic and one protected future first-round pick from the Lakers, Nuggets, and Sixers.
The Magic will be getting other bits and pieces- including this year's Number 1 pick of the 76'ers- Moe Harkless
All this is through Stein...
We can only hope... more when we know more...

So, It's The Philadelphia 69'ers, Now...???

It's not out of the norm to have a non-sports person read the sports on occasion- especially when it comes to holiday weekends and such...
But this smells of sabotage... and someone who really had no idea of what was going on in the sports world...
While funny, it speaks of what the news business is these days...
Not letting sports people do their job...
And the HQ can't wait for the T-Shirts...

NBA and players to meet plus Sixers sale official

For those who don't know: The NBA and the NBA Players Association are in the midst of a serious labor disagreement. The league, realizing that player salaries are completely out of control is trying to get it under control.
They've cancelled the preseason and the first 2 weeks of the regular season. Both sides are meeting today (Tuesday) though they've not been close on negotiations. NBA commissioner David Stern is quoted as saying if they didn't get a deal done today (not likely), there won't be any NBA Basketball until at least Christmas.
In the meantime, the league approved the sale of the Philadelphia 76ers to a group led by billionaire Joshua Harris. That ownership group will be introduced today (Tuesday).

Forgive the op-ed here but: The NBA is right, salaries in the NBA are nothing short of ludicrous. Paying Joe Johnson $127 million for 6 years to play for the Hawks. Why? That is completely insane. And the prime example of why there needs to be restraint.
Don't get me wrong, the fact that salaries like that are being paid is not the players fault. If an owner walked up to you and offered you that much money to work for him, what would you say?
The owners had the ability to keep salaries under control and didn't. And now they are losing money, in part because if you are paying $100 million a season in salaries, it's probably not easy to make money. We get that.
So in the meantime, we get the NBA guys on barnstorming tours and playing overseas. And sure, there are and will be people that miss the games. Heck, I'll miss the games. But not enough to feel any empathy for either side in this silly dispute. One that the owners, will inevitably win.
