ICYMI: Lane Kiffin Makes Nick Saban Jokes

Ok, context here. We've often gone on about the alleged constant seriousness of Alabama football coach Nick Saban.

And well, after the brief roasting by his highly publicized assistant coach Lane Kiffin at Tuesday nights Broyles Award ceremony. Let's hope Saban has a good laugh.

Kiffin, a finalist for the award, given to College Football's top assistant coach cracked a few jokes about his boss's lack of height and a few other things to the assembled crowd of mostly football folks.

Here's the video...(jokes start about 2:50 in)

UAB Fans and Students Rally for Football Program

((ht: alabamas13.com))

It may be a case of too little too late, but it didn't stop over 400 fans, alumni and students from rallying Sunday night on the University of Alabama-Birmingham campus.

They turned out to show support for the football program that according to multiple reports will be shut down this week by the highly politicized state Board of Regents.

For those unaware--the school has been losing money on the program, which has struggled for success the past few seasons.

However, this season, the Blazers, under head coach Bill Clark turned things around, going 6-6 and becoming eligible for a bowl game for the first time in 10-years.

But the board, which is filled with University of Alabama alumni who don't want to deal with UAB doesn't think having a program that is struggling to stay afloat financially is worth it. Reports have surfaced saying they've already fired Athletic Director Brian Mackin and the school has no games scheduled after the 2016 season.

There are multiple things at play here--the truth of the matter is a lot of smaller FBS (Div. 1) teams don't turn or barely turn a profit. But they still remain a part of their respective universities. UAB has lost several million dollars over the past few seasons, but they aren't even in the Top 5 of that category.

It's amazing that in football mad Alabama, a state with no professional sports (no, the Crimson Tide and Auburn don't count), College Football is the only thing most people there live for.

But like everything else southern, it's caught up in politics. And the board is mostly big, rich Alabama boosters who don't want to foot the bill for someone else.

But enough rambling, here's reaction from those who rallied Sunday night and are going to continue rallying on into the week.

DEVELOPING: Done, Done, and Done: UAB Blowing Up Football

In one of the more transparent power plays by a Board of Trustees in recent memory, the University of Alabama Birmingham has fired its Athletic Director and will shutter its football program.

The "when" is the only question...

Joe Schad caught up with Clark after the game as well, and Clark was not optimistic at all: "I think it's going to happen," said Clark, who led UAB to a 6-6 record in his first season at the school. "Unless something changes before the weekend ends, I think it's over. I think the odds are very high it ends this week. To shut the doors? That's sad."

Dan Wolken over at USA Today has some more information: With UAB's football future hanging in the balance, a person close to the decision-making process told USA TODAY Sports that athletics director Brian Mackin has given indications the program will shut down this week and that Mackin is working on a separation agreement from the university. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the conversations were supposed to be private. Mackin did not return multiple calls and text messages seeking comment.

Clark is meeting with his president tomorrow, via his Twitter:

Contrary to news, We haven't heard any decision about our program. We are still fighting!

Here's head coach Bill Clark after becoming bowl eligible yesterday- the irony is inescapable...
Obviously, more when we know more, but the HQ hopes the UA Board of Trustees is happy with themselves...

Hype Video: Mississippi State Gets Pumped for Bama Game

((ht: @hailstatevideo))

We've said repeatedly on this here website how much we love and enjoy watching hype videos. And quite honestly, the kids in the college video departments have gotten to be quite good at it.

The latest entry in the cool video sweepstakes comes to us from the Mississippi State video department who threw together this little entry to get their folks pumped for perhaps the biggest game this year, a battle with Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

If you want to know who we think will win the game, you'll have to go down the page to our Dirty Dozen and Bottom of the Barrel column to find out.

Having not seen an entry from the Tide, right now, Mississippi State wins the video war:

Signs of the Apocalypse: Nick Saban Dances; Lane Kiffin Sings

((ht: twitter/@alexevans))

So, you ready to see something you can't unsee?

You're latest (Sunday night) Internet craze?

Yes, you are not imagining things, it's none other than Alabama head coach Nick Saban in the red sportcoat doing the electric slide.

Not to be outdone, newly hired offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin got in on the musical fun. Alabama recruit Donetris Scarborough tells BamaOnLine.com that Kiffin, at the same party, held for recruits and their family, got in on some Karaoke fun, singing "Sweet Home Alabama".

Read the whole story from BamaOnLine.com RIGHT HERE

Unfortunately...or fortunately, depending on your taste, video of the performance has yet to surface.

ICYMI: Saban Speculation Over: Staying at Alabama

If any of you live outside of Alabama, we want to explain to you where…and why the people of Alabama rate football higher than any other thing that happens anywhere else in the world.

The lead story on the late local news last night?

Not the school shooting in Colorado, no, the lead…and breaking news cut-ins were all about one thing: Nick Saban signs a contract extension.

Despite rampant speculation the University of Alabama head coach would take the money from Texas and run, he didn't. And the more the stories began surfacing that he would, the less we really believed them.

Late last night, Saban's people and the University's people agreed to an extension of his current contract, which now runs through the year 2020 at over $7 million a year.

Yes, he's getting paid $7 million-plus to coach a college football team.

In case you don't follow college football, the rampant speculation and belief by many was the University of Texas would ask coach Mack Brown to step aside. That still may happen, but as of the day we write this, Brown is still the coach.

If Brown had stepped aside, the conspiracy theorists all believed Texas, though not the best, but certainly the richest program in the country would send a Brink's truck to the Saban residence and he'd leave.

And maybe 5 or 10 years ago, it might have happened.

But Saban, for all the bridges he burned behind him, is now 62 years old. The end of his career journey is a lot closer than the beginning. And it became obvious, that for all his ladder climbing ways, he didn't want to go somewhere and start all over.

We may never know how close he came to leaving Alabama and heading to Austin, Texas or if it was even an option. Our suspicion, as most people believe, is that his people were contacted to gauge interest. And heck, he may have thought about it for a minute or two.

But no Alabama fan, you have nothing to fear. Your savior is not leaving. Not now, not next year, not until he's good and ready.

God knows how much money he'll be getting at the time that happens. Schools…and the University systems in many states may be one step away from being broke, But the almighty college football coach, he gets to sit in his palatial office waiting for the peasants to bring him offerings, all while he gets to lean back and count his money.

Enjoy the ride Tide fans….just remember eventually it will come to an end.

The Unheard Iron Bowl Final Play Call (VIDEO OF THE DAY)

This is fantastic.

By now, most of you following College Football either know of or have seen and heard the final play of this years Iron Bowl between Alabama and Auburn. So we'll spare you the set up and explanation (Auburn won on a fluke play---109yd missed FG return by Chris Davis of Auburn-- that never happened before)

Without spoiling it, here's a version of that play you haven't seen. And a call made by someone new...

Is ESPN Politicking for Alabama/Auburn Rematch?

If you venture over to the website of our friends at the 4-letter word (ESPN), you might see an interesting 1st page headline. (see right)

And while it's only a part of the content inside writer Gene Wojchiechowski's column on College Football's storylines this week, it raises some interesting questions.

The biggest is this: If you are NOT an SEC person, which few outside the Southeast are, does this sound like lobbying? Does it come across as portraying what would be best for ESPN?

To us, it kind of does...

But....if you actually READ Wojo's story, it's purely hypothetical based on the premise that Duke beats Florida State, Michigan State beats Ohio State and Auburn beats Missouri.

And while Duke is highly unlikely to beat Florida State, the other two scenarios could happen. Which means the headline is completely irrelevant. (note--we are fully aware of "hypothecial stories"---but remember, hypothetical does not equal real)

Read the full story from ESPN.com RIGHT HERE

Because by trade all of us here at OSG Sports are journalists, it's the headline that bothers us. While we and many others will certainly spend the time to actually read the story, not everyone will. And it will be taken the wrong way.

When the rest of the country sees Jay Jacobs on the Sunday SportsCenter saying: "To not have the SEC Champ in the BCS title game is...un-american and a dis-service to college football", aside from being laughably funny, is more or less an insult to everyone who is not an SEC fan or team.

The folks at ESPN have been and always will be willing to pander to whatever they believe will get more attention focused on themselves and create a debate where there should not be any.

It's what they are very good at.

That's why we wish they would have thought twice about making that particular subject their primary story of the day.

Ohio St. WR Talks Smack on 'Bama/Florida St.--UPDATE: Meyer Ranks Team Over FSU

Guess there's a reason they play the games, but it's still interesting to hear.

Ohio State backup wide receiver Evan Spencer was asked an innocent question about how he thought his Buckeyes would fare against #1 Alabama or #2 Florida State.

It was his answer that's getting him much more attention than his job performance.

Spencer told Cleveland.com that; "We'd wipe the floor with both of them". Perhaps an honest answer to an honest question. But not one that Twitter or Sports Bloggers will let slide.

And no, we don't believe that Ohio State would beat, nor wipe the floor with either of the two aforementioned teams.

But it does make for some amusing conversation.

On a somewhat related note--OSU coach Urban Meyer took time on Monday to explain why he picked his team #2 over Florida State.

Something scant few others did….

SEC Fans Apoplectic After Oregon Students Sell "We Want Bama" T-Shirts

Ctsy: Daily Emerald/Micheal Arellano
((ht: dailyemerald.com))

Really?

A pair of University of Oregon students have printed and are selling green t-shirts on campus with the phrase "We Want Bama" on them.

And the $10 t-shirts are going like hot cakes on the Eugene campus.

The two students decided to do it to draw attention that the current #2 ranked Ducks football team may be running headlong into a BCS title match with SEC Power and current #1, The University of Alabama.

Harmless fun, right?

Well, maybe....unless you are a crazy-ass Alabama and/or SEC Fan.

Already USA Today has a story titled "Oregon Football should hope and pray Alabama doesn't see this T-Shirt".

Read the USA Today story RIGHT HERE

We say "Good for Oregon". Why not? If SEC or Alabama fans are "Angry" about this, well, they need to lighten the heck up....

Can Oregon beat the Crimson Tide? Who knows? They may not even play.

Will they get the chance? Maybe. Alabama has a pretty easy path to the SEC Championship game, with only LSU at home standing in their way. They could, in theory lose that or the the SEC Title game to a Georgia or South Carolina team.

As for the Ducks, if they can survive games with Stanford and UCLA, yeah, sure, they are pretty much a shoo-in for a title game.

It's week #7 folks, there's a lot of football to be played. Yeah, sure, at this time Alabama and Oregon would seem to be on a collision course, but we'd argue at least one of them may not be one of the two best teams in College Football...so stop getting worked up over a t-shirt!!!!!

The Dirty Dozen and Bottom of the Barrel: The G Force Edition

Any of you geeks out there remember this?

Now imagine that you are the Alabama Crimson Tide...or Marcus Mariota and the Oregon Beavers...

Sportswriters across the land are hoping both can save the world and give them the game they drool over: Oregon vs. Alabama for the BCS Glass.

Will it happen?

Maybe it will....maybe it won't.

In the meantime, the field is beginning to settle, the undefeated teams are pulling away and separating themselves.

But is there REALLY a dominant team this year?

We don't think so.

Keeping that in mind, we will remind you of one constant. We are damn good at picking games...

Last week: So we leveled off 9-2 on the week, 59-5 on the season. Pretty good, isn't it...

But enough of that. As Casey Kasem always says, "On with the Countdown"

THE DIRTY DOZEN:

1) Alabama 5-0. Ha-Ha. Yeah, great, you beat Ga. State. Congratulations. But you have problems Slick Nick. Apparently you have/had an assistant paying players. Yeah...uh, that's not good. The NCAA generally frowns on it. But no fear, you have no near term challengers. This Week: vs. at Kentucky. Our Pick: Alabama 44, Kentucky 13

2) Oregon 5-0. Ha-Ha. Colorado had the lead on you...for about 30 seconds. We picked you to score 59, you scored 57....missed it by __that much. A bigger test this week on the road and Gameday in the house. This Week: at Washington. Our Pick: Oregon 37, Washington 31

3) Clemson 5-0. Barely broke a sweat against the 'Cuse...in New York no less. Well done. The meat of your schedule is ahead. Don't pull a Clemson on us. You could spoil the BCS party if you don't. This Week: vs. Boston College. Our Pick: Clemson 41, BC 23

4) Stanford 5-0. Congrats. You survived Washington. Though we'd love to see David Shaw and Coach Sark in the squared circle.

This Week: vs. Utah. Our Pick: Stanford 33, Utah 27

5) Ohio State 6-0. Congrats guys, you won the toughest game on your schedule last week. Unless you monumentally choke, you are going to run the table. But you may have the worst schedule in the entire BCS. Admit it. The Big 10 is awful this year. This Week: BYE

6) Florida St. 5-0 Wow! Two ACC teams in the top 6? How does that happen? Jameis Winston happened. That's how. We love watching him play. And the 'Noles next square off with Clemson. In 2 weeks. This Week: BYE

7) Georgia 4-1. Will the last healthy guy please turn out the lights? The best of the one loss teams has lost it's Top 4 WR's, Top 2 RB's and a handful of defensive starters. But they've held on. Allegedly the schedule gets easier, but Dawg fans are probably asking when? This Week: vs. Missouri, Our Pick: UGA 31, Mizzou 27

8) LSU 5-1  Okay, can someone please explain how a Les Miles team is scoring 45 a game? Cam? Zach? Answers please. It's time to find out if the Tigers will be running with the big boys at the end of the season. This Week: vs. Florida, Our Pick: LSU 31, UF 17

9) UCLA 4-0. Foks, this is your sleeper team. Though the schedule doesn't get easier. We really like what our pal Jimmy Mora Jr has done here. Brett Hundley is awesome. Need we say more. This Week: vs Cal. Our Pick: UCLA 33, Cal 23

10) Texas A&M 4-1. We continually profess our love for Johnny Football. He is the Tim Tebow of his era. Only the heel version.

No major challenges ahead. Until late November. This Week: at Ole Miss. Our Pick: Aggies 43, Ole Miss 30

11) Oklahoma 5-0. Okay Bob Stoops. Yes, you are underrated. But will you please stop whining about the SEC? You still have to win your own conference. Which is no guarantee. This Week: at Texas. Oklahoma 34, Texas 21

12) Baylor 4-0. Ok. University of Texas. You are delusional if you don't try to hire Art Briles from Baylor. He is a genius. Pure and simple. Put this team and Oregon on the field together and we might see someone score 100. And it would be fun to watch. This Week: at Kansas St. Our Pick: Baylor 70, K-State 16 (look it up)

THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL:

5) New Mexico State 0-6. Yikes. You lost to former Bottom member New Mexico 66-17? Really? How does that happen? Oh, wait, you are being outscored by 33 points a game on average. That explains it. This Week: vs. Rice. Our Pick: Rice 33, New Mexico St 0

4) Hawaii 0-5. Norm! Yes, Mr. Chow. We're talking to you. What happened? This used to be a proud team. And now this? How does that happen? Inquiring minds want to know. This Week: at UNLV. Our Pick: UNLV 40, Hawaii 20

3) UMass 0-5. So, yeah, that whole Fight Club thing from a couple weeks ago has served you guys well, hasn't it Charley Molnar? Dude. Either you can't coach, or...well. Where you stand right now tells everyone all they need to know. 7 points a game. ---sigh---This Week: vs. Miami (OH) Our Pick (do we have to?) Miami 8, UMass 7

2) Georgia St. 0-5. Yes, the mighty Saban is a kind and generous soul. 45-3. Consider yourselves lucky that you walked away relatively healthy Trent Miles and team. But your season isn't over. Don't forget. This Week: vs. Troy St. Our Pick: Troy St. 38, Ga. State 13

1) Southern Miss 0-5. Oh, Golden Eagles, how we pity you so. 17 straight losses, 4 turnovers as you go down vs. a horrible FIU team. If you could see us, we'd be shaking our collective heads. Where's Brett Favre when you need him? This Week: at East Carolina. Our Pick: ECU 47, S.Miss 13

Ha-Ha: Alabama Suspends Top DB Clinton-Dix Indefinitely

((ht: al.com))

Yeah, sure, his name sounds like a laughing matter, but getting indefinitely suspended certainly isn't that funny.

Top ranked Alabama coach Nick Saban announced after practice on Wednesday that the guy considered the teams best defensive back, Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix will be suspended for a "Violation of Team rules".

Note that Saban didn't say how long, but just indefinitely.

Nor did he mention what Clinton-Dix did to get the boot

More from AL.com RIGHT HERE

The Tide face perhaps the worst FBS team in the country this Saturday, Georgia State, so the general consensus is the move won't hurt much, at least in the short term.

However, the loss of Clinton-Dix, considered a possible 1st Round NFL pick by most scouts, for a long period of time, may hurt the Tide as they pursue yet another NCAA Title.

The schedule sets up well for Bama as the only serious challenge on the schedule left is a November 9th game vs. LSU, a game that will be played in Tuscaloosa.

Short of losing a game they shouldn't, Alabama may face a powerhouse offense in Georgia, a game where someone of Clinton-Dix's talent will be needed.

We suspect this suspension will be over in a week or two. But we could be wrong....

Interpret as You Will: Alabama Recruit Waving Wads of Cash

Dee Liner on Left
((ht: sportingnews.com))

We'd now like to open the floor to questions from the audience. Please feel free to discuss after reading the story and seeing the photo.

Take a look at the Instagram photo on your right. In it, you'll see Alabama freshman recruit Dee Liner flashing rather large piles of cash along with his friends. The attached hashtag--#StruggleOverWit. It was uncovered by a website called "College Spun.com".

It's not clear where or how young Mr. Liner came upon this sudden windfall, but the youngster from Muscle Shoals has been rather popular, or at least well known in the state of Alabama.

He originally committed to Auburn back in January, but then de-committed after the departure of former coach Gene Chizik.

Just a few weeks later, he ended up signing with Alabama or the team known as Auburn's chief rival.

We are NOT saying the Liner has done anything wrong. Other than posting a really dumb picture on Instagram that's already attracting some unwanted attention. What we are saying is: Let's hope this is something perfectly innocent and Liner unknowingly posted a photo that is giving people a chance to make the wrong assumption.

But considering the cynical nature of College Football recruiting, particularly in the SEC, it's not hard to assume the first impression is right.

Texas A&M Continues Running Smack on Alabama

aggielandoutfitters.com
Have ya ever heard the saying "Be careful what you wish for?"

That would be our piece of advice to the happy-go-lucky crew over at Texas A&M.

Just one day after Athletic Director Eric Hyman started a Twitter battle by saying "What does the Moon and Texas A&M Have in Common? We control the Tide", the t-shirt has arrived.

Yes, that is it there on the right.

Most of you know the Aggies stunned themselves and the world by going 11-2 last year, their first in the SEC, beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa and had a Heisman Trophy winner.

Not a bad 2012.

But the question asked is: Should you not let sleeping dogs lie? Yes, we know Nick Saban and Alabama are heading to College Station this upcoming season, but do you really want to talk smack now?

Of course, you can add them to the list of people that includes a University of Florida defensive coach and Arkansas head coach Brett Bielema.

We all will see what happens in Week #3.

Alabama Hoops Player Charged In Kidnapping Of Second Cousin

((HT: WTOK-TV))

Back in May, Devonta Pollard's mom was arrested for the kidnapping of elementary-school student Jashayla Hopson because the Hopsons/Fords (Hopson's mother's name is Roshell Ford) and Pollards had a land dispute with Hopson's mother. Today, police arrested Pollard and two others for conspiracy to commit the kidnapping.

Kemper County (MS) Sheriff James Moore said Pollard and Joyce Johnigan were arrested on the charge. Moore also says a third woman, Shaquayla Johnigan, was taken into custody on the same charge.

Hopson was taken from East Kemper Elementary School in April. She ended up on a rural road okay the next day. Jashayla knocked on the door of a residence on that road and the homeowner called police.

On May 1, three people were arrested, including Pollard's mother, Meridian-area basketball coach Jesse Mae Pollard. Kemper County authorities are saying Ms. Pollard came up with the scheme. The other two defendants arrested with Jesse Mae Pollard are being held without bail.

Ruth Ingram's piece in the Jackson Clarion-Ledger details what happened after Pollard allegedly picked up Hopson from the school:

Jessie Mae Pollard sent an ominous text to Ford. It read: "dont call the police I will call you later if you call the police u wont see her again."

Prosecutors say Jessie Mae Pollard dropped off Jashayla unharmed on a rural Lauderdale County road at about 1:30 p.m. May 1, telling her to wait there for her mother, then drove to Northport. Jashayla walked to a nearby Burrage Road residence, and occupants there dialed 911.

Cecil Hurt of the Tuscaloosa News reports that Mississippi TV stations are reporting the two women (Pollard and Hopson's mother) are cousins.

Got all that...???

Here's Part One of a series WTOK-TV did on Pollard's recruitment...

Trouble Plagued Rolando McClain Retires

McClain's Mugshot from 2011 Arrest
((ht: nfl.com))

This is certainly a unique way to part ways with a team after getting in trouble.

Rolando McClain- 23-years old, 3 seasons and 2 arrests into his NFL career has decided to hang up his cleats and retire from the Baltimore Ravens.

McClain never played for the Ravens, who picked him up after being cut by the Oakland Raiders. He did have some success in Oakland, but a string of arrests in his hometown, Decatur, Alabama bought him a one-way ticket out of town.

Read about our 1st report on McClain from December of 2011 RIGHT HERE

The Ravens gave him a chance to rehabilitate his image, but another arrest last month in Decatur, Alabama put his career in jeopardy.

McClain, a graduate of the University of Alabama, was a 1st round pick by the Raiders and at times did flash some talent, but teams already have grown weary of his act. The Ravens appear to have given him an easy way out and moved him to the "Reserve/Retired" list with the league.

Charles Barkley Takes Shot at Alabama on National TV

((ht: larrybrownsports.com))

Okay, this is pretty funny. Though we suspect the folks at the University of Alabama probably don't think so.

TNT NBA Analyst Charles Barkley, an Auburn grad with--let's just say a pretty good sense of humor--had a little fun with the University of Alabama football player arrests from earlier in the week.

Check out this video of Sir Charles wearing a bandage with an alleged blood spot. He describes, jokingly, going to Tuscaloosa to congratulate the Crimson Tide and getting mugged and his credit cards stolen.

Hilarity ensues....sort of.

Bama Recruit Reuben Foster Sleeps Like a Vampire

((ht: lostlettermen.com))

It's not that unusual for high school kids to--on occasion, fall asleep in class.

But when they do that, they are subject to be messed with by fellow students.

Such is the fate suffered by Alabama prize recruit and current Auburn High School senior Reuben Foster.

Check out the photos.

The first one is kinda funny. The second one. Well, besides defying gravity, it also kind of defies description.

How exactly does one fall asleep like that? We've seen dogs and vampires do it...

But that's about it.

We're guessing someone will pay for this, and Foster will probably pay for it too. His soon-to-be coach will probably not be thrilled to see his prize recruit at least appearing to slack off while tending to his schoolwork.

Vandy's James Franklin Calls Nick Saban "Nicky Satan"

((ht: wmaz.com

Whoa!

What is this? The head coach at Vanderbilt talking smack about perennial national championship coach Nick Saban?

Yup, that's exactly what he appears to have done.

James Franklin was speaking to Central High School in Macon, Georgia when called Alabama's head coach, Nicky Satan.

Really?

It was spoken within the context of outworking "The Man" himself, but hmmmm...wonder how that will go over in Tuscaloosa?

Granted, we don't think Saban really will care one way or the other. But you can be darn skippy that the 'Bama fanbase is going to bring it up. As will the Alabama media who pretty much report on even the smallest of slights.

Vandy's been making some noise in the SEC, with back to back bowl seasons in, well, the first time ever. And it's probably not such a bad thing Vandy and Alabama don't play this upcoming season either.

Props to Franklin for being aggressive and aiming high. We don't know if the Nicky Satan thing was such a good idea publicly, but nice set of cojones there James.

Here's your video:

Hype Music: Dawgs on Top: Interesting Imagery

This is interesting. Well produced, but parts of it are a bit...well...odd.

A group of University of Georgia fans have put together what the young kids these days call a "Hype Video" (sarcasm).

And it's very well put together.

We're assuming it was done to get them hyped for Saturday's SEC Championship Game vs. Alabama which if they are able to win, would get the Bulldogs to their 1st ever BCS Title Game.

Unfortunately for us, we couldn't get past the Dwarf Rapper at the beginning. Mind you we have nothing against that, it was just not an expected image. The other was the generic white boy student eating a Chick-Fil-A Sandwich in slow motion.

Those images were just plain weird.

But hey, whatever works. And no, we haven't picked a winner in this game because what we want to happen and what we think will happen unfortunately are two different things.

Check out the Video posted by Graham Williams:
