The HQ will admit that we like the idea of hockey being played outdoors and having it count in the standings...
This year's Winter Classic was in Washington, DC for the Caps and the Chicago Blackhawks.
There was actually talk that players would wear sunglasses to combat the sunshine that would be present at Nationals Park before 2:30 eastern time- the time of day that the sun would drop behind the home bleachers. But, as a bit of a make-good, the NHL decided to make the teams change ends in the first period at the half-way point in addition to the third period switch.
The winner went to Troy Brouwer, but not without some consternation and questioning of a late penalty call.
Here's the highlights
Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews was asked about the loss- and the stuff that happened late
((HT: CSN Chicago))
So, now it's back to playing hockey indoors until the Outdoor Classics come back in a little while...

Panthers Win Most Painful Shootout Ever In NHL History
((HT: NHL/willpower698's Instagram))

Here's the ending
And the shootout highlights in their entirety
The previous long was 15 full rounds back in 2005 and this was the first shootout that had a 6-goal winner (6-5)

The Wilson-Holzer Fight Had A Twist
((HT: NHL Network/HockeyFights.com))
And it might mean another phone call from the league office for what happened at the 35-second mark
Korbinian Holzer might get a hearing over the punch, but anything is possible in the appeal- considering the idea that "Holzer didn't know what he was hitting at the time" would be his defense...
Should be an interesting test case for the NHLPA

Alex Ovechkin: Music Video Star
Haha! This is kind of funny even if we have no idea what the lyrics to the song are.
Check out this Russian music video from a Russian pop music singer named Katyla Lel. In her latest music video, she writhes, grinds and slithers all over a man standing statuesquely in the middle of the shot.
That man: None other that Washington Capitals star winger Alexander Ovechkin. Yes, Ovechkin is Russian too.
Ovechkin eventually gets to do something other than coldly stand still as they let him suit up and shoot CGI pucks at Lel who is also slithering all over a goalie net on the ice.
Wonder how many takes it took to get all this right?

DEVELOPING: Trotz To Caps, MacLellan To GM
((HT: CSNWashington))
Brian MacLellan was promoted to Senior VP and GM of the Washington Capitals as Barry Trotz is now the new head coach of the franchise.
Trotz was on board with the search and was okay with the MacLellan promotion
Chick Hernandez talks to CSNWashington Caps insider Chuck Gormley
The next set of questions will center around the new relationship between Trotz and Alexander Ovechkin. Ovie had a great scoring year for the Caps, a horrible plus-minus, and an owner who wanted to have a fresh set of eyes for his new head coach.
MacLellan has been with the team since the 2000-01 season.
The HQ would like to know how this qualifies.
The defense and goaltending are issues that needed to be addressed in the off-season and it will be interesting to see how this evolves as we head into the summer. The team has very little cap space at present ($1.198M before the new cap adjustment) and 6 players are under UFA status this season- Halak (who left already to the Islanders), Penner, Stoa, Strachan, Brouillette, and Grabovski.
That knocks a little over 11-million off the books, but how you fill the space will be the interesting moves for Ted Leonsis, MacLellan, and Trotz- who will be working with more money in DC than he ever did in Nashville.

Ovie Says He's Okay... BUT...
((HT: TSN BarDown))
This knee-on-knee almost broke Twitter earlier Sunday when Team Russia had this happen on the ice at the IIHF World Championships
There was talk of hospitals, pictures of ambulances, and a near revolt...
So, you know... the German player who hip checked and injured Ovechkin is Marcus Kink. When asked about the hit by Russian reporters, Kink stormed off in post-game interviews.
And Slava Malamud, through his Twitter feed, offered this bit of optimism:
Alex Ovechkin is back in the team hotel. Walking on his own, no crutches, but limping. Team doctor says it's "better than expected"
We'll see how Team Russia responds at the Worlds from this moment on...

DEVELOPING: Washington Capitals Fire Coach and GM
Big changes are afoot for the floundering Washington Capitols hockey team. The Caps, who feature one of hockey best players, Alexander Ovechkin, did not make the playoff this season.
And the casualties for that underachievement, team G.M George McPhee and coach Adam Oates were fired Saturday morning by team owner Ted Leonsis.
McPhee ran the team for 17-years and the team did have some success, winning some conference titles and making the playoffs 10-times.
As for Oates, he coached the team 2-seasons. This year the team was 38-30, but that was only enough to get them to 9th in an 8-team playoff system.
It seems to be the beginning of the new "next round" of changes to benefit Alex Ovechkin and the group of entertaining underachievers. Chuck Gormley and Jill Sorenson discuss the future...

Not What Caps Fans Want Right Now... Ovi8 Quitting On A Play
((HT: Sportsnet))
All the HQ can really say is watch 8-Red during this play that went from a 3-0 Dallas lead to a 4-0 Dallas lead in the game last night...
Caps head coach Adam Oates made an example of his star: “Ovie quit on the play coming back,” Oates said Wednesday. “Just goes to show you you’ve got to hustle the entire time. The whole entire time.” And that's what you see in one of the game's elite scorers who is also carrying a huge minus on the plus-minus scale... With six games left in the regular season, the Caps are two points out of the second wild card spot. They're not just two points out of the normal 8th spot. They're two points out of the last wild card spot... Now, that the NHL let's nine teams in, you don't have to have as much success and still get in to the playoffs. And the Caps aren't even doing that well... Here's the postgame reaction from Ovie after the 5-0 loss... ((HT: CSNWashington))
"Too many mistakes..."

Trade Deadline Day Starts A Day Early With Luongo And Penner
A lot of guys went on waivers and cleared...
Ottawa's Joe Corvo and Cory Conacher, the Florida Panthers' Scott Gomez and Scot Clemmensen, Maple Leafs left winger Trevor Smith, Wild center Jake Dowell, Oilers winger Corey Potter and Flames defenseman Derek Smith were placed on waivers.
Leafs enforcer Frazer McLaren, Predators goalie Devan Dubnyk, Penguins forward Chuck Kobasew and Oilers defenceman Philip Larsen all went unclaimed after being waived Monday.
Then the fun started today...
Dustin Penner was sent from Anaheim to Washington for a pick and the Ducks picked up Stephane Robidas from Dallas. They also sent goalie Victor Fasth to Edmonton for two picks...
CSN Washington's Jill Sorenson caught up with Penner's high school teammate, Eric Fehr...
The Caps were right up against the cap ceiling- so, as a move to alleviate some of that, they sent Martin Erat and John Mitchell to Phoenix for Rusty Klesla, Chris Brown and a pick...
Ilya Bryzgalov went from Edmonton to Minnesota to be one of the Wild's goaltenders- especially good timing with the announcement that Nick Backstrom is out for the year with an injury...
The Islanders sent Andrew McDonald to Philadelphia for two picks and a player...
But the big move of the day sends Roberto Luongo back to Florida along with Steven Anthony for two players...
Bobby Lu is looking forward to heading back to a place where crowds are non-existent...
Sportsnet adds instant analysis...

Stand up guy...

Tom Wilson Should Expect A Shanahan Phone Call
((HT: Sportsnet))
For this...
Wilson was dealt a five-minute charging major and ejected from the game. There is no word yet whether Wilson — who has no suspension record — would be called for a hearing. Wilson and Schenn actually fought in a preseason game on September 27th, so there's something there (maybe). The Flyers thought the hit was a turning point in the game... ((HT: CSNPhilly.com)) Where Caps head coach Adam Oates doesn't even think it's a penalty... ((HT: CSNWashington.com)) “It’s a tough, reckless play, a hit from behind,” argued Flyers coach Craig Berube.
Berube said that Schenn is “OK.”
The key will be whether or not the league office sees the acceleration into the check as an issue and some kind of premeditation...
And the next time the two teams play, it will be interesting as to whether or not Braydon's brother, Luke, takes up for what happened... Luke wanted a piece of everybody in a Caps sweater after the hit, but he couldn't leave the bench and do anything about it immediately...

Ovi8 Dials Up Four in Shootout Win
((HT: CSNWashington/NHL))
Traditionally, the games between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Washington Capitals are out of their collective minds...
Last night was no different...
Down 3-0, the Caps came back and Alex Ovechkin went off- scoring four in a 6-5, come-from-behind, shootout win...
Otherwise, known as normal behavior...

Line Brawl! Line Brawl!
((HT: Sportsnet))
The game was 7-0, so the end wasn't in much doubt...
So, usually, in these circumstances what happened below happens to send a message...
Here's the longer version...
((HT: NHL Network))
And here's a shorter piece of it...
You figure Ray Emery will get a suspension for going from one end of the rink to the other... Emery received the highest total of 29 penalty minutes. He was charged with leaving the goal crease, instigating a fight, and fighting. He was also ejected. "He didn't want to fight, but I basically said, 'Protect yourself,'" Emery said postgame.
114 penalty minutes were handed out in the brawl itself.
Philadelphia racked up 99 penalty minutes, and Washington received 65 in the game from beginning to end...
Vincent Lecavalier lost some teeth as a result of his battle.
Steve Downie suffered a concussion.
And (better yet) Emery was named the third star of the game...
The HQ is NOT even kidding on that one...

Your Friday Night In The NHL- OT, OT, OT
((HT: NBCSN/CBC/CNBC/NHL))
This is an easy one to write...
It was all about the extra hockey...
After the Toronto Maple Leafs survived their third period against the Boston Bruins with a 2-goal lead turning into a one goal lead for the last nine minutes... and the HQ means survived... 2-1 was the final and game 6 is in Toronto Sunday night.
Washington was in a back and forth against the New York Rangers... and it came down to Mike Ribeiro...
Game 6 is Sunday afternoon...
Detroit was up 3-1 in the third, but goals by Etem and Ryan less than a minute apart tied the game and sent it to free skate...
Everyone was commenting about how Henrik Zetterberg hadn't scored in the series against Anaheim...
He scored twice including the game winner 1:06 into overtime for the 4-3 win and a game seven in Anaheim Sunday...
