TCU Crushes Texas 48-10 And Improves It's Street Cred For CFB Selection Committee

In the beauty pageant that is the College Football Playoff the TCU Horned Frogs is starting to look
much prettier without the beer goggles.

On Thanksgiving night the Frogs took care of business and then some against the Texas Longhorns.

TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns and the Horned Frog defense intercepted Texas quarterback Tyrone Swoops four times leading to a 48-10 rout over the Longhorns.

It was TCU's longest margin of victory over Texas in Austin since 1956 when the Horned Frogs won 46 - 0.

TCU's defense was dominant forcing six Texas turnovers and taking advantage with 30 of the Frogs' 48 points coming off those Longhorn miscues.

"You just can't turn the ball over."  Texas head coach Charlie Strong said. "It's one of those where you have to play good, clean football. We didn't play clean football tonight."

If game control is a strong metric for the College Football Playoff selection committee than TCU should impress.

The Horned Frogs jumped on Texas for 13 points in the first quarter and then put their foot to the throat of the Longhorns in the 4th quarter with 28 points.

TCU supporters are wondering is this what you have to do to break into the final four of the CFB Playoff.

"To me, everybody was talking about how important Texas was, about how good they are, at the beginning of the year."  TCU head coach Gary Patterson said.  "You know, you've got to keep with the same story, you can't say now that they are not any good. I mean, three quarters of the United States was picking Texas to beat us tonight. You can't be like now Texas is not any good. They are a really good football team,"

'I think the whole team came in with the mindset of being ready to play." TCU wide receiver Josh Doctson said.  "Obviously I'd be lying if we weren't aware of style points and all that, but just came out and played TCU football and did what we had to do."

"At the end of the day, if you're talking about the playoffs, it's really not up to us." TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin said.

A 38 point win over Texas in Austin should carry some weight when the committee meets again and releases their poll Tuesday night.

Next up for the Horned Frogs is a home game against Iowa State and unfortunately that game won't do much for your body of work.

Longhorns Get A Pep Talk From Matthew

And they got the one guy who could really pep them up to do it...

No real guesses needed...

And that's why he's priceless to both movies and sports...

Report: Roger Goodell and DeMaurice Smith to Consult Charlie Strong on Discipline

Roger Goodell
((ht:texas.247sports.com))

Huh?

According to reports by noted University of Texas insider Chip Brown, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFLPA Head DeMaurice Smith are seeking out Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong about Strong's "Core Values".

Specifically, Brown lists Strong's commitment to having his Longhorns live up to the Core Values, which are 1) Honesty, 2) Treat Women with respect, 3) No Drugs, 4) No Stealing and 5) No Guns.

Anyone on the Texas roster who fails to live up to that gets dropped. And thus far, Strong has dismissed 9 players and suspended 3 more for not living up to them.

Read more from Texas.247sports.com RIGHT HERE

Interesting thought process here. We respect what Charlie Strong is trying to do at Texas win, lose or otherwise. It's the way a College Football program SHOULD be run.

And the "Core Values" are something that should be a given for all athletes and quite honestly, for people in general to emulate. Really, it is.

But for the NFL, the problem runs a bit deeper. We think it would be great if the league adopted this to base there discipline rules on. But how do you enforce it?

The NFL's problem from day 1 is they never seemed to take these problems as seriously as society does. As long as the team gets their player back, nobody seemed to care.

But if Goodell and Smith are indeed serious and looking for opportunities to come up with a better system/program to institute, then by all means--go for it...

David Ash Is Done At Texas

((HT: Longhorn Network))

David Ash will no longer play football-period.

Head coach Charlie Strong said that, as a result of multiple concussions, his former starting quarterback is giving up the sport.

His first major concussion was in a game against BYU last season. He came back for the Kansas State game, but still suffered some after-effects and was ruled out of the season.

He came back for the 2014 season opener against North Texas and still had issues after the game against the Mean Green. He has decided it's, simply, time to go. Coach Strong did say that Ash will still be a part of the football program

Here's the story of Ash and what he meant to the Longhorns

The HQ commends Ash for making a smart decision and wanting to have a "rest of his life."

Just How Bad Is Texas Football Right Now...???

And by "Texas," the HQ means specifically the Longhorns...

We get that Charlie Strong is disposing of a lot... No, A LOT!!!... of Mack Brown's recruits in a cleaning house of massive proportions- 8 so far with four more players that were "suspended" for the game against BYU Saturday night...

The larger questions was: Just how many guys were left to chase after Cougars QB Taysom Hill...???

Answer: Not enough...

It was ugly and it was the most points allowed by a Texas team since they gave up 66 to UCLA

Charlie Strong took the blame for the "embarassment..."

2 Longhorns Footballers Suspended After Sexual Assault Charges

((HT: KVUE-TV))

The HQ doesn't really post these stories, but the alleged mental slowness angle is the reason we're posting the story.

Two Texas Longhorns wide receivers, Kendall Sanders and Montrel Meander, are now both charged with sexual assault and out on personal recognizance bonds. Head coach Charlie Strong has suspended the two players pending the resolution of the case.

So, what's the reason we're posting this story...???

Sanders is also facing an improper photography charge.

Translation: The two players allegedly assaulted a campus acquaintance, but one of the two apparently took pictures.

Campus police are investigating the charge that Meander's room was the location of the alleged assault. The report says that Meander and the woman who eventually went to police had consensual sex before Sanders entered the room and allegedly began assaulting her.

Meander, then, allegedly joined in the assault.

Ryan Autullo, Brian Davis and Tony Plohetski of the Austin American-Statesman covering the story went to UTPD chief of police David Carter press conference this afternoon. Carter said investigators confiscated Meander's and Sanders' cell phones through a search warrant. Carter didn't say if there was any evidence inside them or not.

Here's the live shot from outside the jail
Texas DB Quandre Diggs on his Twitter account was less than pleased: "It's a shame when people piss away great opportunities, God has given us all tremendous blessings." That seems to be the prevailing opinion among teammates right now... Head coach Charlie Strong released a statement on the arrest: "We've been monitoring and addressing the situation with Kendall (Sanders) and Montrel (Meander) since it was brought to our attention. It's been made clear to everyone on our team that treating women with respect is one of our core values, and I'm extremely disappointed that two young men in our program have been accused of not doing that. With the recent charges against them, they have been suspended indefinitely from our football team and will no longer participate in any team functions."
The on-campus investigation should take a few weeks.

Red McCombs "Kicked In The Face" Over Strong Hire

((HT: ESPN))

Red McCombs was the owner of the Minnesota Vikings when the team hired Mike Tice...

That worked out well...

And, now, McCombs (the largely influential Texas Longhorns Booster) is hot about the hiring of Charlie Strong as the new Texas coach... since he wasn't consulted...

McCombs wanted Jon Gruden... which was another great idea on his plate...

Lacking anything else to do, he went on a talk show in San Antonio to express his displeasure over not being consulted on the hiring of Charlie Strong- a "kick in the face..." he called it...

Here's the sound bite from McCombs and sports talk radio...

McCombs has donated nine figures to the school which, of course, means he can dictate who can be coach...

Since the track record is so solid...

All that's missing is a harumph, a heel turn off his boots, and walking back to whence he came...

ICYMI: Charlie Strong to Texas is Done: Reaction Runs the Gamut

So, it's been pretty interesting over the past couple of days to see the reaction to first the news Texas wanted to hire now former Louisville football coach Charlie Strong, then the wait while Strong insisted on telling his boss, Louisville Athletic Director Tom Jurich that he was leaving and then the reaction from the folks in Texas.

Actually, it's been kind of funny.

Last night, Louisville confirmed what everyone already knew, Strong would move to Austin and take over the biggest budget football operation in the state (College Level).

Notice, we didn't call them the best, as they've arguably been passed by Texas A&M and by Baylor in recent years.

But the hire of Strong is a good one. He's had a ton of success at Louisville, which strangely was his first head coaching job. He's universally respected and most outside of the crazies in Texas believe he will be wildly successful with the budget he's about to be handed.

That's why this column in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram by Gil Lebreton is pretty funny (not in a good way)

Check it out RIGHT HERE

Lebreton called it "Firing Jay Leno and hiring Aresenio".

Really?

No, Strong may not be a "Type A", Nick Saban/Steve Spurrier type, but anyone who thinks he won't be successful is crazy.

Yes, he's going to have to deal with the apparently omnipresent "Longhorn Network" (which nobody outside Texas cares about) which will intrude into his life and job like nothing he's ever experienced before.

But again, despite the arrogance and perception inside that Texas was the "Job of All Jobs", they actually got this right…they hired the right guy.

Which quite honestly, should scare everyone else.

Expect the official announcement on Sunday afternoon.

WHAS-TV in Louisville gives us their reaction:

And KXAN-TV gives us the Texas reaction:

Is Texas Longhorn Strong...???

So, after Baylor head coach Art Briles tweeted his disinterest in the Texas job and UCLA head coach Jim Mora said he was staying in Westwood, it came down to Louisville's Charlie Strong to be the new head coach for the Longhorns...

The reported salary figure is 5 years at $25-million...

Strong's record at Louisville was 37-15 and he is set to accept the position if asked...

Strong, apparently, still wanted to speak with Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich and his university president first.
“He will be the coach,” a well-place source told Kirk Bohls and Brian Davis at the Austin American-Statesman.

Strong seemed to have survived a four-hour interview with AD Steve Patterson...

Here's Brett McMurphy discussing briefly with Kenny Mayne

ICYMI: Louisville Takes Care of Sleepwalking Florida

No, this is NOT the biggest upset in BCS history as ESPN billed it. But it sure the heck surprised an awful lot of people.

The University of Louisville and coach Charlie Strong surprised the sleepwalking Florida Gators 33-23 in Wednesday nights Sugar Bowl. We also should note, Strong was a former Florida assistant.

When the Cardinals Terell Floyd returned an interception on the 1st play of the game for a TD, you knew something was up.

And while Teddy Bridgewater (2 TD passes) outplaying Gator QB Jeff Driskel (2 INT's and a fumble) was a surprise to nobody, the way the Cardinals dominated a Florida team who didn't seem like they were interested in the game, surprised all the so-called experts.

After all, wasn't Florida "allegedly" the best team in the SEC? They got the BCS berth even though they were ranked lower than Georgia who actually showed up to play in the Cap One Bowl. Yet they looked like they wanted to be anywhere BUT New Orleans. And we might add, the Gator fans were noticeably absent as well, reports saying they only sold 1/2 to 2/3 of their ticket allotment.

Louisville, the Big East champ was ranked #22 going into the game and next year, they will be a member of the ACC. Both teams finish the season with 11-2 records.

U of L Being Sued By Ex-Football Player

((HT: WDRB-TV))

A former University of Louisville football player has filed a lawsuit claiming he was asked to cover up an attack on him by two of his teammates.

Patrick Grant also charges that the school and the football coaching staff didn't live up to what Grant says he was promised by them after the attack occurred.

Grant asserts on October 24th, in the U of L locker room at Papa John's Stadium, Jacob and Isaac Geffrad attacked him. Grant was beaten so badly that the lawsuit states, according to WDRB-TV:

"...he (Grant) required immediate, urgent care and nearly lost his left eye, the bones around it being fractured."

"His injuries to his left eye area were severe. Several of the bones surrounding it were broken and he was internally bruised. In other words, Patrick had sustained a 'blowout fracture' caused by a blunt trauma to the head. These are generally caused from personal altercations. His eye was bulging too. His treating physician was required to probe around the eyeball without any anesthesia in order to determine the extent of Patrick's injuries."

Grant had reconstructive surgery and the Geffrads were charged with assault and kicked off the team.

Grant's lawsuit also claims that, on the way to the hospital, university trainers told him to lie and not divulge the true source of his injuries.

His scholarship was, apparently, revoked January 4th of this year. When Grant called head coach Charlie Strong, Grant alleges that Strong refused to address the issue and hung up the phone. Grant is now suing for breach of contract, and asking also for compensatory damages of an unknown amount because if his injuries.

Here's Grant on special teams when he was a player at U of L

So Much For The Big East Being Worth Something

There was the prevailing idea that Louisville and Rutgers would be making some kind of statement: what that statement is... the HQ has no real clue... but some kind of statement about their place in the Bee-Cee-Ess...

So much for that idea- on both fronts...and Charlie Strong's viability during Silly Season may have taken a hit...

First, Teddy Bridgewater played with a broken bone in his wrist... which the HQ gives him due props for... But UConn beat Louisville in overtime- which will send the Cardinals plummeting in the rankings...
((HT: ESPN))

And, then, Pitt scored 21 unanswered in the second on their way to a 27-6 upset of Rutgers- who was ranked 21st at the time of the opening kickoff...

Pitt, still left in some shambles from the Hurricane Todd Graham era, had to have Paul Chryst pick up some pieces... the Panthers, behind Ray Graham, are now 5-6...

The Wackiest Top 25 Day Of The Year...Alabama, Texas A&M, Syracuse, Louisville, Texas, and Stanford

Let's just start at the top...

A lot of people, the HQ included, thought that after Alabama took care of LSU that the game that would scare them was behind them...

Instead, the game after LSU was the game that bit them...

Johnny Manziel reinforced his trophy aspirations- even as a freshman- with the Texas A&M Aggies upset of Alabama in Tuscaloosa...

Nick Saban was, obviously, less than pleased...
((HT: WIAT-TV Birmingham))

Louisville head coach Charlie Strong wondered aloud why his team, while undefeated, wasn't ranked higher than ninth in the Bee-Cee-Ess poll. Everyone told Strong that he hadn't really played anybody...

So, then, what happens when Louisville plays Syracuse in the Orange Dome on senior day...??? Ryan Nassib throws for 246 yards, the Orange puts the pedal down early and beats the Cardinals 45-26...

It wasn't that close...
((HT: WSYR-TV Syracuse))

The Texas Longhorns honored Darrell Royal by running out of the wishbone- which was a nice tribute... but they did it with a twist...

The Longhorns won over Iowa State 33-7 to improve to 8-2...
((HT: KXAN-TV Austin))

Longhorns honor DKR with a win

And, until the Florida- Louisiana Lafayette game shows up somewhere, the HQ will finish with the Oregon State-Stanford highlights... The only turnover Oregon State had on the day would turn costly as the Cardinal held on at home 27-23... ((HT: KVAL-TV))

Charlie Strong Addresses His Media "Freeze Out"

The first thing that came to mind, obviously, was this...

Regrettably, the U of L is 7 blocks away... they live on South 3rd...

To recap, the spring game for the Cardinals is today. But head football coach Charlie Strong wasn't granting any interview opportunities since he felt his team was being ignored during spring practice time.

What Coach Strong failed to realize was that there was this thing that involved both the UK and U of L basketball teams in New Orleans. That's where most of the market's TV resources were for the previous few weeks that led to their denouement.

Strong was having none of it, but he finally spoke on the matter...

Here's da coach... who, while his heart may be in the right place, must remember the list of priorities in town...

Charlie Strong Bans Local Media... For Now...

((HT: WHAS-TV Louisville))

The head football coach at the University of Louisville is a little pissed off right now, because of things like this...

Charlie Strong has banned all local media from spring practice because of the extreme lack of coverage the team received during the above events...

Wonder what Strong is going to do on the 17th when the school has their congratulations rally for the basketball team...???

Strong feels totally ignored right now... what about after a week from today...???

Adam Lefkoe of WHAS-TV posted these entries on his Twitter account...

With most TV and Newspaper crews covering UofL and UK B-ball in recent weeks, apparently there wasn't enough coverage during spring prax.

Louisville Football is currently banning mainstream media from covering the team.

Strong is set to have a presser Thursday to "discuss..."

National media are still welcome at Coach Strong's door, but local folks are SOL at the moment. The Thursday gathering should be interesting as Strong has yet to realize that he's not in Gainesville anymore...

TWTW: Upsets And People Just Upset... Alabama, LSU, Nebraska, Michigan, UCLA, Louisville...

Hey... did you know that there was a football game in Tuscaloosa Saturday night...???

Apparently, it was the lowest scoring game between the top-two ranked teams since the immortal tie between Army and Notre Dame back in 1946...

Don Hawes and Chris Pollone stayed up way past bedtime...
