Look Out Here Comes Carolina. Tar Heels Take Round One 74-66 Over Duke

After starting ACC play 0-3 North Carolina may have righted the ship right on time.

Thursday night the Tar Heels won their eighth in a row defeating rival Duke 74-66 in round one of the Battle of the Blues.

Here's the highlights, Thanks GoHeelsTV

Marcus Paige scored all of his 13 points in the second half to lead the Carolina comeback.

This game morphed into a heavyweight slugfest you would expect from the rivalry.

"For a few minutes there both teams were fighting so hard it wasn't very pretty."  North Carolina head coach Roy Williams said.  "It's really two teams that fought awfully hard and understand where they stand in this
rivalry."

"I think it's an emotional game."  Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said.  "No matter what you talk about until you're in it, you don't know. They're kids, kids, men-it can affect you. The atmosphere was sensational, but we should want that and we do. That's a great atmosphere to play in, but sometimes it can hurt your communication patterns. You can start to think of what you're doing instead of what we're doing. That can have an impact, no question."

On Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, North Carolina it was party time.

Duke Rings The Victory Bell All The Way To Charlotte As ACC Coastal Division Champions

The Duke Blue Devils were picked dead last in the ACC football pre-season poll.

Don't you wish you put some money down in the Las Vegas sports books on Duke winning the Coastal Division now.

Saturday Duke defeated North Carolina 27-25 to win the ACC Coastal Division and play Florida State in the ACC Championship Game next week in Charlotte.

Thanks WTVD-TV, Raleigh/Durham

Duke finishes the regular season 10-2, never in the history of Blue Devil football had a Duke team won 10 games in a season.

Anthony Boone has never lost a game as the Duke starting quarterback.  The streak has now reached 10 straight games.

Against the Tar Heels Boone completed 23-of-34 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns leading the Blue Devils to victory over their rivals in the baby blues.

This is a special football team that has owned the fourth quarter.  Duke overcame at 25-24 deficit in the final quarter with the Blue Devils fourth, 4th quarter comeback win.

Duke's defense is special as well in the fourth quarter only giving up 37 4th quarter points all season and has not given up over seven points in the fourth quarter all season.

Duke moves on to the ACC Championship Game in Charlotte to play soon to be top ranked Florida State.

Andrew Wiggins One-Ups Jabari Parker, Kansas Defeats Duke 94-83

It's hard for a college basketball game to grab attention while college football is in the stretch run but Tuesday nights Duke - Kansas was sexy enough to do just that.

Two of college basketball's name brands and a match-up of two of the best freshman in the country that came in with lots of hype, Kansas' Andrew Wiggins and Duke's Jabari Parker.

Parker didn't disappoint with 27 points, nine rebounds before fouling out late in the game.

Here's Jabari Parker after the game.  (Thanks Blue Devil Network)

Wiggins wasn't to shabby either with 22 points, 16 of those 22 points came in the second half. Wiggins also added eight rebounds and a couple of key baskets down the stretch that put Kansas over the top.

Wiggins had a luxury Jabari Parker didn't have, another 20 plus point scorer.  Perry Ellis led Kansas with 24 points, nine rebounds in KU's 94-83 win over Duke.

"Big players make big plays," said Wiggins, "I think our whole team, whoever was on the court, every possession we made a big play. That's why we came out on top."

"We didn't play a bad game tonight, we played well," Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "We didn't play well on the defensive end in the second half and in big moments, we weren't able to get a stop. Part of that is they're good. They're really good."

Andrew Wiggins may have one upped Jabari Parker in this head to head meeting but both a special basketball players.

I'm hoping these two match-up again one more time, like at the Final Four.

The New Look ACC: Coach K Gives Boeheim Lay of the Land

If you are an ACC basketball fan, you'll probably find this amusing.

If you are a college basketball fan, you may find this a bit insightful.

Check out the interview with Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski and Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim from our partners at the ACC Digital Network.

It's a good look and learn from two old friends who for the 1st time will be competing against each other in the upcoming season.

It Was All About The "U" Against Duke. "Canes Beat The Hell Out Of The Blue Devils

We haven’t seen swagger like this from a Miami team since the hay day of the Hurricanes’ football teams of the 1980’s and 1990’s.
The number one ranked Duke Blue Devils were ambushed by 25th ranked Miami at the Bank United Center 90-63.

The last time Duke got whack like this was way back on January 18, 1984 when Wake Forest put a pounding on the Blue Devils 97-66.
“They were men, we were boys.”  Duke head coach Mikc Krzyzewski said after the game.
Not an easy thing for Coach “K” to say but spot on.
Miami locked down Seth Curry who was 0-10 from the field and 0-5 in three point attempts to finish with zero points.
Combined Curry, Mason Plumlee and Quinn Cook were 6-37 from the field and the Blue Devils shot 30 percent.
“In this game you can be hit with anything and then you have to be able to hit back.” Krzyzewski said.
Duke had no counter punch to Miami’s hay makers.  A 25-1 first half run by the Hurricanes turned out to be the finisher.
“We beat the No. 1 team in the nation, that’s big time,’’ Miami center Reggie Johnson said.
What Miami is doing in the ACC is big time.  The ‘Canes are 5-0 in the ACC and right now comfortably in first place.
Shane Larkin is stating his case as the best point guard in the ACC.  Miami head coach Jim Larranaga said he’s waiting to see the best out of Shane Larkin.  Wednesday night coach “L” saw one of Larkin’s best performances representing the “U”
The son of baseball Hall of Famer Barry Larkin finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. Larkin also dished out five assists.
Shane Larkin is all about getting his team mates involved and sharing the ball.
“As a point guard it more important to get your teammates involved.”  Larkin said.  “Getting assists if more important that scoring the basketball.”
10 rebounds from your point guard?  That when you know it was your night.
“I actually couldn’t believe it.” Larkin said. “We do a rebounding drill every day at practice and I guess it’s working out.”
Next up for Miami is a home date with last season’s ACC Champion and in-state rival Florida State.  The ‘Canes better get over Wednesday’s big win, the Seminoles will be ready to bum them out Sunday.
The Hurricanes looked like a Final Four team last night and it’s certainly possible that Miami could be in Atlanta in April.
On Wednesday though, it was all about the “U”.

Report: Duke and UNC to SEC?

 ((ht: dukebasketballreport.com))

You know, on April fools day, we feel a bit reluctant to report on something that is borderline incredulous to believe.

But on some levels, it sort of makes some sense.

The website "DukeBasketballReport" is reporting that the SEC is prepared to cut the heart out of the ACC...and it could happen really soon.

They quote sources that tell them the SEC is preparing to pilfer both Duke and North Carolina within the next few days.

And yes, like we said, we know this is April Fools day, so we are a bit skeptical. And if this site is pulling everyone's collective leg...well, them's fightin words.

Read the entire story from DukeBasketballReport RIGHT HERE

So...what do you think? On several levels, it would make sense. They are the two basketball "Powers" in the conference. And with the expanded ACC Footprint, they lose some identity. Sure, in football, Duke at least is over-matched. But North Carolina isn't.

But according to the story and it would be the only way something like this makes any sense for both schools, the SEC and commissioner Mike Slive, is that it is a basketball move, a move to help balance Kentucky and Florida who, realistically, have been the only 2 reasonably good teams in the conference for several years.

In the meantime, the jury is out on this one...

Is Peyton Manning working out (Throwing) at Duke

Let the conspiracy theories begin.

A video surfaced on YouTube Friday that purportedly shows Peyton Manning working out and throwing with teammates Dallas Clark and Reggie Wayne...at Duke University.

If you are asking why Duke? Because that is where former mentor and current Duke head coach David Cutcliffe resides.

It's very hard to tell if it is Manning on the wide cellphone shot, but the footwork and motion look eerily similar to Manning.

And yes, our pals at ESPN say they have independent confirmation that it is all true.

Florida State On Something Resembling A Roll

((HT: WRALSportsfan.com))

Part of the HQ runs this story knowing that the other shoe will drop and drop hard in the near future- it always does when it comes to basketball...

First, it was the blowout win over North Carolina in Tallahassee where Tarheels coach Roy Williams left his walk-ons on the floor... but he thought he was bringing them with the rest of his squad with 14 seconds left in regulation down by more than 30...

Now, the Noles hit a buzzer-beater to break Duke's 45-game win streak at Cameron Indoor to win 76-73

Coach K feels bad for his kids...

But we still know he loves Duke...

Here's the Snaer game-winner...

Watch Out ACC, Here Comes Virginia

The ACC Coastal Division is shaping up to be a showdown between Virginia Tech and Virginia.

In his second year at UVa, head coach Mike London has the Cavaliers in a position to compete for the Coastal Division title.

Saturday coach London wore his battle fatigue's and the Wahoos took on Duke in Charlottesville.

Here's the highlights and post game sound from the game. (Thanks WVIR-TV)

"To see the guys come out and execute, and guys making plays, and defense coming up with the big interception, those are the types of things you want to hang your hat on as an identity of what your team is about." Virginia head coach Mike London said after the game. "Hopefully we can try to continue to do things that will help us win and minimize those things that cause us to lose."

"I think we've gained a lot of resilience and a lot of confidence." Virginia senior cornerback Chase Minnifield said. "It's starting to show. We're not worried about anyone else but Florida State."

That's right, Virginia has Florida State next in Tallahassee.

TWTW: The Upsets- Notre Dame, Duke, Oregon State (With Bonus Virginia and VaTech Coverage)

((HT: WSBT-TV/WRALSportsfan.com))

And, yes, the HQ knows that this is kind of a stretch...

A lot of people had South Florida taking out the fighting Irish... it took almost six hours through two weather delays, but it finally happened. And it took USF about six hours to print the t-shirt...

And the HQ also knows that Richmond is a class-A I-AA outfit while Dook is a perpetual struggler in the Aay-Cee-Cee...
Sean Robertson has the details with bonus coverage of VaTech-App State and UVa-William and Mary...
((HT: WTVR-TV Richmond))

But the funkiest game of the day, when it comes to upsets, was with Sacramento State and Oregon State... and the Beavers were not nice...
