Swung On And Belted: Giants Take Game 2 In 18

((HT: MLB.com))

The old record for an extra-inning game in the playoffs was 5:51- the Nationals and Giants blew right past that one... they went six hours, 23 minutes in length. For innings played, it matched the 18-inning Game 4 of the 2005 NL Division Series, when Houston beat Atlanta, 7-6.

If it hadn't been for Tanner Roark grooving a ball to Brandon Belt, they might still be at it.

The Giants are one win away from knocking off a pre-playoff favorite for the fall classic. The Reds were a win away once before in 2012, but gave up three straight to the Giants. And, at the same time, the Giants post-season win streak is now at a record ten games...

John Baker Gets The Win For The Cubs In 16

((HT: MLB.com))

Big deal, you say...???

John Baker is a Cubs catcher brought on to pitch the 16th inning last night at Wrigley and he did this...

It was the longest-timed game for both teams at 6 hours and 27 minutes. Baker admitted he hadn't pitched since the Cape Cod League, so we're probably talking at least a dozen years ago.

Frankly, the HQ blames Colin Cowherd since he was the one who sang "Take Me Out To The Ballgame." We don't know what we would blame him for, but we'll blame him just because.

College of Charleston Wins In 23 Innings

((HT:WCIV-TV))

Nothing like having to play a double-header and a half just to settle one game...

Happened in Charleston as the CoC played William and Mary. And played William and Mary. And played.

23 innings and a murderous-looking box score later, it was a 3-2 win for the home team.

Yes, only 3-2 in 23 innings...

The game ties for the second-longest in NCAA history and went a little over 6 hours. One game in the NCAA tourney went 25 innings in 2009 (Texas and BC) and a game back in 1971 also went 23 innings.

The teams scored in the 7th, the 19th, and the 23rd innings and Eric Bauer got the win for Charleston going ten innings in relief.

No word on if he threw 194 pitches in his outing.
Here's some of the highlights

2 Position Players Finish On Mound For Phillies In 18-Inning Marathon

((HT: CSN Philly))

Let's just say it was a long day for the Phillies Casper Wells...

Arizona scored five two-out runs in the top of the 18th inning to beat the Phillies, 12-7. Wells started in right field for the Phillies, went 0 for 7 at the plate and took the loss in just his second major-league pitching appearance. He pitched last month in mop-up duty for the White Sox.

Wells, forced onto the mound after the Phils depleted their bullpen, ended up allowing five two-out runs before being relieved by infielder John McDonald.

The game started at 7:05PM and ended at 2:12AM- 7 hours, six minutes: the longest in Phillies history. The teams combined to use 20 pitchers, tying a major-league record.

Here's Ryne Sandberg post-game...

According to Jayson Stark through his Twitter:

Last player before Casper Wells to go 0x7 & allow 5 runs in a game was Lum Harris for '42 A's. but he got 46 outs. Wells got 2!
