Ameer Abdullah Saves Nebraska

TED KIRK/Lincoln Journal Star
McNeese State, yes McNeese State almost pulled off an upset that the word stunning would not
apply.  Shocking wouldn't even be strong enough either.

The Cowboys from Lake Charles, Louisiana came to Lincoln and hung with the Cornhuskers.

In fact with the game tied at 24 with 20 seconds left until Nebraska finally got a big play.

Ameer Abdullah took a short pass from quarterback Tommy Armstrong, Jr. and had the run of the year so far breaking five tackles and taking it the distance 53 yards for the game winning touchdown.

Cornhusker Nation breathed a big sigh of relief as Nebraska escaped an embarrassing loss to Mc Neese State 31-24.

"Thank God for Ameer today"  Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini said.

"We were doing a lot of man-to-man on third-and-long, so I saw an opportunity to go isolation with the linebacker so I wanted to make the most of it."  Abdullah said.  "So I caught the ball, cut back and scored."

"You know you just have to take into consideration that he's a playmaker"  Nebraska quarterback Tommy Armstrong, Jr. said.." If he's going on with the mike, he just has to realize there's a possibility of getting a first down. That was the main focus, getting a first down. But it turned into four or five yard gain into a touchdown. I just have to applaud him for being the playmaker that he is."

"Got to give them credit, they found a way to win the game at the end."  McNeese head coach Matt Viator said.  "Great play by (Ameer) Abdullah."

Honey Badger to stay at LSU or not?

((ht: nola.com/espn.com))

This kind of depends on who you believe.

ESPN.com's Joe Schad reported on Monday that former LSU standout Tyrann Mathieu was considering staying at LSU after being dismissed from the football team late last week.

BUT...Nola.com reports that is indeed NOT true and not even possible. They quote sources as saying Mathieu is returning to home in New Orleans while investigating a move to FCS school McNeese State.

The question is: Who do you believe?

The ESPN.com story is RIGHT HERE

The NOLA.com story is RIGHT HERE

OSG Sports reported on Friday that even if Mathieu was dismissed as a 3rd drug violation, he would be forced to sit out for one season. But not forced to leave school, never to return.

You can read that story RIGHT HERE

Quite frankly, we think it's absurd Mathieu would sit out, then return to LSU, though stranger things have happened. There is no reason to believe that his sights are set on a career in the NFL and sitting out for at least a season for bad behavior will only hurt his cause.

No, he can go to McNeese, dominate there and write his own ticket, checkered history or not. Playing at the FCS level would not inhibit him getting to the NFL and as long as he behaves, there are a lot of things that pro teams will overlook, right or wrong.

Honey Badger Visits McNeese

((HT: KPLC-TV Lake Charles, LA))

Surprising no one...

McNeese State Sports Information Director Matthew Bonnette acknowledged in a prepared statement that Head Coach Matt Viator met with Tyrann Mathieu Friday night.

"I received a call from Tyrann after practice on Friday that he wanted to come and meet with us," Viator said. "We contacted LSU to get permission to talk to him and he arrived on campus later that night. We visited for an hour-and-a-half and then he went back home to New Orleans."

McNeese officials still do not acknowledge that his transfer is a done deal...

"To McNeese's knowledge, Mathieu has not made a decision on his intentions and there will be no other comments from McNeese about the issue at this time."

Here's how the early question was posed in Lake Charles...
