LSU has dismissed 2011 Heisman Trophy finalist Tyrann Mathieu from its football team for violating team and school rules.
The program released a statement:
“This is a very difficult day for our team,” head coach Les Miles said. “We lose a quality person, teammate and contributor to the program. However, with that being said, we have a standard that our players are held to and when that standard is not met, there are consequences.
“It’s hard because we all love Tyrann. We will do what we can as coaches, teammates, and friends to get him on a path where he can have success. We are going to miss him.”
UPDATE 2:11pm (EST)--Speculation is rampant that Mathieu failed not his second, but rather his third drug test. Most are aware of him getting in trouble last season for failing a test, but there had been no report of a second before this.
According to several of the reports, LSU's policy states that a third offense is an automatic one year suspension.
The question then becomes this: Is he leaving the school for good, or is he going away for a year? If so, imagine the possibility of Mathieu and Greg Reid (recently dismissed from FSU) on the same team. We're pretty sure nobody would ever kick to them.
Here's the Les Miles presser...
