The MLS' Columbus Crew have confirmed the death of 22-year-old midfielder Kirk Urso. Team spokesman Marco Rosa says details of Urso's death are still being determined.
According to Adam Jardy at the Columbus Dispatch, Urso was at the Park Street Patio restaurant when police were called a little before 1AM. He was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead an hour later.
Urso was injured and did not accompany the team for its 1-0 loss to D.C. United in Washington. He was in his first season with the team. He was a member of the University of North Carolina's title-winning team last fall.
The Crew released a statement this morning:
"While the circumstances of Urso’s passing are still being determined, no further comments will be made at this time. The thoughts and prayers of the entire Columbus Crew and Hunt Sports Group are with the Urso family in this time of need."
