Investigation: UNC Has Paper Classes That Are Paper Tigers

The HQ saw them and took part in them in our college days...

There was always the class that was an easy, athlete class that was supposed to be an easy "A."

For us it was things like Family and Child Development, Geology, Theatre, and Freshman-level Public Speaking in our senior year. We know of athletes that took correspondence classes to stay eligible. So, the idea that there is steering of athletes to easier classes to maintain their eligibility isn't all that new...

But the scope of what happened at the University of North Carolina might be the issue this time around. In the wake of the African-American Families major that was attached to a lot of Tarheels athletes and the idea that they were (gasp) given preferential treatment in those classes was the subject of an investigation that went back 18 years on campus.

What the former federal prosecutor Kenneth Wainstein found was just "a lot..."

Former department chairman Julius Nyang'oro and former student services manager Deborah Crowder were at the center of the investigation and, as the math tells, almost 48-percent of the students in the AFAM-major classes were athletes in the 18-year period.

Employees at UNC-CH were disciplined as a result of the investigation and, apparently, AD Dick Baddour and then-head football coach Butch Davis were aware of AFAM. Baddour allegedly didn't pry and Davis denied knowing of the steering.

The HQ thinks this is far from over in the long-term...

OSG High: Sayreville High FB Season Cancelled Amid Bullying Scandal

The HQ is (at the same time) disgusted, not surprised, and pretty pissed at what seems to be going down at Sayreville High In New Jersey at present.

The football team has won three titles in the last four years- but they won't win one this season since the school superintendent suspended the rest of their schedule (and the schedules of the middle school and junior varsity squads as well) after an investigation found:

"there was enough evidence to substantiate there were incidents of harassment, intimidation and bullying that took place on a pervasive level, on a wide-scale level, and at a level in which the players knew, tolerated and in general accepted."

So we have alleged hazing that was out of control and, in a separate investigation, a coach resigned amid allegations of steroid possession.

Nice...

The investigation is ongoing and Sayreville's coaches and other school personnel are being told not to comment on a matter that is under review.

Hawks Internal Meeting On Deng Exposed Levenson

It appears that an internal background report that described a potential free agent pick-up may have sparked the whole "Bruce Levenson is now selling the Atlanta Hawks" turn of events...

A report linked to Luol Deng had some racially-insensitive words attached to it. GM Danny Ferry read the unedited report aloud in the meeting and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Chris Vivlamore has the paragraph in question as:

“He is still a young guy overall. He is a good guy overall. But he is not perfect. He’s got some African in him. And I don’t say that in a bad way.”

The background information on Deng had not been vetted appropriately and led to it being read in its entirety. GM Danny Ferry will be disciplined, but not fired for his recitation in the meeting.

The paragraph led to an internal investigation by the team's law firm. The firm then spoke to 19 people and reviewed over 24,000 documents, Hawks CEO Steve Koonin told the AJC over the weekend. It was during the investigation that the Levenson e-mail directed to Ferry and co-owners Ed Peskowitz and Todd Foreman was discovered.
