Cal Tech gets the "Lack of Institutional Control" Penalty from the NCAA

We post this as something to think about in light of the other developments of the day.

The NCAA released a statement today (Thursday) announcing they are punishing California Tech (D-3) for the dreaded "Lack of Institutional Control" charge.

Cal Tech allegedly allowed some 30 athletes who were ineligible to participate in NCAA Sports over a 4-year period.

Those athletes were ineligible in large part due to the students practicing during a period where they weren't in class, but rather waiting for classes as part of the school's "Shopping" period before finalizing their class courseload.

Cal Tech faces Probation, Fines, Public Reprmiand and Censure along with vacating all wins during the time period those athletes participated in.

We bring this story up as an example of the what the NCAA terms "Lack of Institutional Control". It's germane considering the discussion of Penn State. This case bears no resemblance to what happened at PSU. But it defines what many think they school should be charged with.

In Cal Tech's case, they appear to have instituted a bizarre ritual for classes that harbored nothing but problems. And those problems were either ignored or not addressed. But they aren't criminal in nature.

Just something for those calling for Penn State to be eliminated to think about.
