Morning Roundup: TCU Drops 82 on Texas Tech

((ht: foxsports.com))

Whoa! 82 points? That's more than the Texas Christian basketball team scored in all but one game last season.

But that's exactly how many points the Horned Frogs scored Saturday afternoon against Texas Tech winning 82-27.

Trevone Boykin, who may be the best quarterback you've never heard of threw for 433 yards and 7 TD's...yes, 7 TD's for TCU. Mind you Boykin didn't play in the 4th quarter against a completely overmatched Red Raider squad.

Oddly, TCU coach Gary Patterson has always been known as a defensive coach, but as happy as he was about the offense, he was not thrilled his team gave up 27 points and a ton of yards in the win.

Rather than go on at length about all the crazy Madden 15 like statistics, we'll just cut straight to the chase and say "Watch the Highlights".

Tubby Smith on a Motorcycle: Bad Idea

The Texas Tech basketball Sports Information folks are lucky he didn't get hurt.

And because Head Coach Tubby Smith didn't get hurt, we can laugh at how stupid funny this is.

Check out what happened during the Red Raiders Midnight Madness basketball event on Friday. We are assuming they thought it would be cool to have Tubby do a "Shaft" speech, complete with music, on the video board to introduce the evenings festivities.

The appear to have thought it would be even cooler if Shaft/Smith rode into the gym on a motorcycle.

Which was great until he tried to stop.

West Virginia Beats Texas Tech on Game Winning 55-Yard FG

((ht: foxsports.com))

No, on a typical College Football weekend, there's probably not much of a chance we post a recap of the West Virginia vs. Texas Tech game in Lubbock.

Two decent, but not great teams playing in the Big 9, not 12 on a Saturday afternoon.

In a game decided by a Field Goal.

It just so happens the field goal by Josh Lambert was the game winner. And it was from 55-yards out giving West Virginia the road victory and setting off a crazy celebration by the Mountaineers and their coach Dana Holgersen.

Did we mention, the 55-yard kick split the uprights as time ran out?

Yeah....

Well, here's your highlights from FOXSports, stick around for the finish, it was pretty dramatic...

Texas Tech Releases Bethel Punch Video, Bethel Reinstated

((HT: EverythingLubbock.com/KLBK-TV))

The security video was released in the Nigel Bethel punch from Texas Tech University. Bethel was jostling under the bucket with women's basketball player Amber Battle when this happened June 28th...

Bethel was kicked out of school and Battle is serving a suspension that includes time missed from her team.
A grand jury on chose to not pursue a felony charge against Bethel.

As a result, Bethel is now only suspended three games:

"This is an unfortunate situation with a unique set of circumstances and there are no winners," Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt said in a statement released to the media. "Every decision related to this case has been the right one at that particular time based upon our principles, student-athlete code of conduct and team rules.

"As I continued to work with Coach (Kliff) Kingsbury and Coach (Candi) Whitaker, we looked at the totality of the situation and have arrived at this decision. Two talented young people made a mistake, have shown remorse and learned some very valuable life lessons."

College Hoops: Marcus Smart Shoves Fan During Game

Most of you sports fans are probably waking up to the news a college basketball player shoved a fan during a game last night.

That player, Marcus Smart, the best player for the Oklahoma State Cowboys has been raising a lot of eyebrows the past few weeks showing frustration and anger quite frequently on the court.

That frustration hit a crescendo Saturday night in Lubbock, Texas when the Cowboys squared off with Texas Tech.

Tech was in the process of beating the 19th ranked Cowboys, when Smart found himself landing in the crowd after blocking a shot late in the game. He got up, found himself in front of self proclaimed Tech superfan Jeff Orr.

If you watch the video closely, some words were exchanged and Smart shoves Orr and then runs back out onto the court.

Note--In no way, shape or form are we condoning Smarts actions...but. After the game, several people reported that Orr may have uttered a racial slur at Smart. And while that doesn't justify the reaction, it might at least give it some context.

Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford had no comment about the incident, Texas Tech coach Tubby Smith said that his back was turned away from it and didn't see it. The Big 12 office has already opened an investigation.

ICYMI: Texas Handles Texas Tech on Thanksgiving Night

Somehow, someway, the Texas Longhorns are trying to salvage what many outside the program consider a bad season.

But Thursday night's 41-16 win versus Texas Tech puts the Longhorns at 8-3, 7-1 in the Big 12 this season. And if Oklahoma State loses to Oklahoma, the Longhorns will win the Big 12.

Texas ran for 282 yards and QB Case McCoy threw for 2 TD's, which more than offset the Red Raiders who shot themselves in their own feet by collecting 11 penalties on the night.

For Tech, it was their 5th straight loss after starting the season 7-0.

Best Team You're Not Aware of: Baylor Drops 63 on Texas Tech

They are ranked 4th, 5th or 6th depending on which poll you believe.

They average 61 points a game and over 600 yards on offense.

Famous alumni (recent)--Mr. RGIII of the Washington Redskins.

And they are undefeated and have inserted themselves into the BCS Championship game conversation.

"They" are the Baylor Bears and the Bears, under Coach/Offensive genius Art Briles are now 9-0, 6-0 in the Big 12 after beating Texas Tech 63-34 on Saturday.

Mind you the score after one quarter was 21-20 Baylor. Of course that also means the score was 42-14 the rest of the night.

The Bears racked up a cool 675 yards of offense, and strangely enough, that total was very well balanced. 335 yards passing, 340 rushing. Quarterback Bryce Petty, he accounted for 5 touchdowns himself (3 passing, 2 running).

The game itself wasn't always pretty and the Baylor defense, while not horrible, is probably not SEC or even ACC worthy.

But how can you not pay attention to a team like this?

Sure, if they beat 12th ranked Oklahoma State next week they'll finish undefeated. But it probably won't be enough. As impressive as the numbers are, it won't get them past the name cache of Ohio State. It definitely won't get them past Florida State or Alabama either….unless two of the three aforementioned teams lose.

Which in theory, isn't likely, but how much fun would it be….if it did happen?

ICYMI: Tubby Smith Resurfaces at Texas Tech

According to multiple reports from numerous outlets, deposed former Minnesota Basketball Head Coach Tubby Smith will return to the court next season at Texas Tech.

The Red Raiders have been a troubled program that over the past few years have employed, Bob Knight, Knight's son Pat, Billy Gillispie and interim coach Chris Walker over the past 4-years.

Smith dismissal at Minnesota caught many by surprise as he had some success, winning 20 games or more the past 5-seasons. But many point to a losing record in the Big 10 as the reason for his ouster.

He's yet to be "announced" as the guy in Lubbock, but it is expected to be just a formality.

BUZZER BEATER: Texas Tech Ends West Virginia's Season

Texas Tech has had a dreadful season on the hardwood.  Heading into their Big 12 Tournament quarterfinal game against West Virginia (The Mountaineers were not that good either.) the Red Raiders were 11-18.

Dejan Kravic brought a bright spot to Texas Tech's season with a buzzer beating tip in to defeat West Virginia 71-69 and extend the season for the Red Raiders.

"It's a 40-minute game, so play for the last second,"  Kravic said. "I saw the ball come toward me. I thought the clock expired, so I just put it up."

"I would rather be lucky than good," Texas Tech interim head coach Chris Walker said. "We end up being the beneficiary of a put-back, which is great, which is rare for us, which is really good."

“We didn’t block out, which I guess sometimes happens in situations like that,” West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins said. “They got a very fortunate bounce – it bounced right back to him.”

During the regular season West Virginia defeated Texas Tech twice, 77-61 on January 2nd in Lubbock and 66-64 on Feburary 16th in Morgantown, WV.

West Virginia's inability to get to the ball ulitimately did the Mountaineers in.

“Our credo for as long as I’ve coached is get to the ball. It’s hard to win when you can’t get to the ball,” Huggins said. “For whatever reason, this group is the worst we’ve ever had at getting to the ball.”

Kliff Kingsbury takes the Texas Tech job

Well, that didn't take very long.

Texas Tech has filled their recently vacant head football coaching job by announcing the hire of now former Texas A&M offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. By the by, Kingsbury is also an alum...

The job became available over the weekend when Tommy Tuberville walked away from Lubbock, Texas and was surprisingly announced as the new head coach at Cincinnati.

Kingsbury became a somewhat "Hot" coaching commodity after his success in developing Heisman Trophy winner Johnny "Football" Manziel.

There are few "High Profile" jobs left, and though Tech may not have been considered a BCS contender at this point, it's a really good job for an up-and-comer such as Kingsbury.

Really the question here is: Why did Tuberville sprint away from the job?"

DEVELOPING: Tubs To Cincinnati

Okay...

Take this one how you want...

But Tommy Tuberville is heading to Cincinnati to hide in the Big East Conference after his time in Lubbock at Texas Tech...

Texas Tech is going to go public later this afternoon with their thoughts. Tuberville was named the Red Raiders head coach January 9, 2010. In his three seasons at Texas Tech, Tuberville was 20-17, 9-17 in the Big 12/10.

Tommy Tuberville slaps Grad Assistant

Oh boy. This isn't going to end good.

Texas Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville is in deep doo-doo tonight after he was caught on video during the Tech/Kansas game, slapping the headphones off of a Graduate Assistant.

You'll see it about 45 seconds or so into this video. Tuberville appears angry after he was forced to call a time out when his team couldn't get set on a 4th and 1 play.

Tuberville, for his part, said in his post game presser claims he was trying to "Yank" grad assistant Kevin Oliver off the field.

But look again at the video. It sure doesn't look (a) like Oliver is on the field or (b) that it was "Incidental".

Judge for yourself, but if we were the betting types, we'd bet that Tuberville is going to be in a load of trouble. At the very least he owes Oliver an apology, but really, he's going to owe a lot more than that.

And he should.

Texas Tech outlasts TCU in 3-OT's

Geez, we got tired watching this game.

Texas Tech held off a game TCU Saturday afternoon in Fort Worth 56-53 in 3 Overtimes.

Yes, that's right, 3 Overtimes.

TCU scored 10-points in the last 2:30 of regulation play to tie the game at 36. There would be a lot more football left to be played.

The 2 teams traded touchdowns in the first 2 overtime periods and the Horned Frogs thought they might pull out the win when Jaden Oberkrom drilled a 38-yard field goal to take a 53-50 lead in the third overtime.

But Tech's Seth Doege threw his 7th (yes 7) touchdown pass to Alex Torres shortly after the field goal, giving the Red Raiders the win.

That win moves Tech to 5-1, 3-1 in the Big 12, TCU drops to 5-2 and 2-2 in the Big 12.

Both teams probably will sleep good tonight.

Here is your game winner: (Thanks ESPN)

DEVELOPING: Gillispie Out In Lubbock

A person familiar with the "situation" says that Texas Tech basketball coach Billy Gillispie has resigned.

More when we know more...
Okay... we know more...

But we figure the out from AD Kirby Hocutt has to with "health" issues...and it did...

So, that means...
2004–2007 Texas A&M
2007–2009 Kentucky
2011-2012 Texas Tech

"Billy has decided to focus on his health and we wish him a full recovery," Hocutt said. "We are proud of the young men that he has brought to this campus. Billy's decision allows him to concentrate on his well-being and allows us to turn our attention to preparations for the upcoming season."

Chris Walker, associate head coach, will continue to handle day-to-day operations of the men's basketball program until an interim head coach for the 2012-13 season has been identified.

Here's some of Billy Clyde's Greatest Hits... ((HT: WLEX-TV)) And this... ((HT: ESPN))

So, who's next...??? That's the interesting question...

Billy Clyde Heading To Mayo For Treatment

((HT: KCBD-TV Lubbock))

It's the next step in the eventual egress of Billy Gillispie from Lubbock...
At least, that's what the HQ thinks anyway...

The current men's basketball coach at Texas Tech is heading to the Mayo Clinic for treatment of his stress and high blood pressure...

Here's the local look...
KCBD NewsChannel 11 Lubbock

An ambulance was called to the Gillispie house Monday night- which moved up the whole timetable...

He is on indefinite sick leave and his future is yet to be decided... all this on the heels of the story that players either have left the school or won't play for Billy Clyde if he returns to campus.

There are allegations of player abuse on campus and Tech AD Kirby Hocutt won't decide on Gillispie until he has completed an on-campus investigation.

The HQ still thinks BCG is on a short-term deal...

Texas Tech threatens to cancel game rather than appear on Longhorn Network

((ht: redraidersports.com))

Wow! Just when you thought the hubub over the University of Texas's Longhorn Network had subsided, there is this.

A report on RedRaiderSports.com today says that Texas Tech is threatening to cancel their game with Texas State because they are under the impression ESPN is going to broadcast the game on the Longhorn Network.

The cancellation would give the Red Raiders 11 games instead of the 12 that most teams play. And they can do that if they choose.

Read the RedRaiderSports.com story RIGHT HERE

This...is...well, pretty funny.

We kind of get the point Texas Tech is trying to make here. We can't criticize it. But they also need to remember that ESPN, the creators of the "Longhorn Network" now controls pretty much all of college football. And especially the Big 12 (Who are only 10)

The guess is that others will follow in Tech's footsteps and it begs a few questions. The biggest being where the 4-Letter (ESPN) is going to put all of their programming?

They paid millions...and in some cases billions to get the rights to pretty much all the BCS Conferences, but there are only ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Classic and ESPN News to put them on right now. Somebody is going to get shuffled out. The Big 12 is competing with the SEC, ACC and Big 10 for TV space.

The Big 10 at least has their own network for overflow games and ESPN has subcontracted the SEC Games and ACC games to Fox Sports South.  ESPN went into partnership with Raycom for regional ACC games.

But they aren't on any school's network. And no competing school in their right mind wants to be on another competitors network. We totally get that.

So what will happen here? Either option A--ESPN finds another home for the broadcast or B---Tech follows through. In the crowded landscape that is college football, we don't know if a lot of people will notice. And right now, we couldn't tell you at this point which way this will go....
