Trade Deadline Day Brings Out All Kinds For Live Shots

It's the last day of trading and acquisitions in the Premier League... if you're going to make a move, you better make it now...

And one of the teams that desperately needs to make a move is Everton if they're going to try and finish top four to get some more cup-based play outside the Prem...

But when live shots attack, so do the fans...
One word "pachyderm..."

BREAKING: Man Handcuffs Himself To Goalpost

((HT: Twitpic/HeyLandsberg))

Someone decided to interrupt the Everton-Man City game at Goodison in the 40th minute by doing what he did below...
#Happening now, soccer fan handcuffs himself to a goal post on Twitpic

No word as to why as of yet...
More when we know more...

1600 UPDATE:
From British presenter Hayley McQueen, through her Twitter feed...

According to @pneGianni the handcuffed man is none other than Jaume Marquet Cot, also known as Jimmy Jump, a well known pitch invader.

OR

@willperrybbc has added that apparently the pitch invader handcuff man is Dave Kelly. Head of Everton group Blue Union

Here's early video of the alleged transgression...

1620 UPDATE: More from McQueen...

Now been informed the mystery handcuff man was protesting about RyanAir, no idea why won't start guessing.

The only thing the HQ can figure is that RyanAir beat the analyst's estimates on earnings per share from the last quarter looking at it year-to-year...

Other than that...???
Dunno...

Yes, Blake Griffin has the dunk of the year..so far

((ht: nba.com))

Yeah, we know. We've seen it. We've been awake about 45 minutes and have already seen it 5-times on SportsCenter and another half-dozen or so posts here on the Internets.

In case you missed it, last night, Blake Griffin of the LA Clippers did the ultimate facial dunk on Oklahoma City's Kendrick Perkins.

And yeah, sure, it was pretty impressive. Though we certainly enjoy Mr. Griffin and his ever widening repertoire of dunks, we suspect this isn't the "Be-all, end-all, never to be repeated, greatest dunk ever" as it is being made out to be.

Sorry for the cynicism...

Thanks NBA.com for the video:

BREAKING: WPS Suspends 2012 Season

The Women's Pro Soccer Board of Directors voted Monday to suspend the 2012 season. Over the last year WPS has been involved in a challenge of keeping enough franchises to be recognized internationally as a legit enterprise. Part of that has to do with the legal battle with a former owner (remember the whole magicjack shenanigans).

From the league:

The litigation has diverted resources from investment in the league and has forced the Board to take action, suspending the 2012 season in order to address the legal issues head-on before moving forward with competition

"We are deeply grateful to our fans and partners for the tremendous support they have shown for WPS, our players and the sport. With our supporters and athletes in mind, we are committed to complete the hard work necessary to resume play in 2013 and reestablish WPS as the premiere women’s professional soccer league in the world." - Jennifer O'Sullivan, WPS CEO

Another "Epic" Hockey Fight From The ECHL

Roof collapse!

((ht: telegraph.tv))

It wasn't quite the Metrodome roof collapse, though it did kind of look like something straight out of a Sy-Fy Network cheesy disaster movie.

This video is from a Slovakian ice rink where there was a youth team sponsored by former NHL player Richard Zednink was practicing when someone noticed the roof began to give way.

Apparently the snow got too heavy or the construction was crap. Either way, the roof, the roof, the roof done collapsed.

Thankfully, nobody was hurt.

Djokovic-Nadal Goes Monday Morning On Us

((HT: TennisAustralia/EuroSport/youtube))

For those of us who follow tennis regularly, and admittedly the HQ only does it around the time of the majors, Novak Djokovic is the man- currently.

And after a five-hour roll in the semis against Andy Murray, Joker had to go 5:53 in the final against Rafa Nadal- just to finish...

And, no that was not a misprint...

For those of you on the east coast, you got a bit of a "Breakfast At..." bonus. The match coverage started a little after 3AM eastern time and didn't finish until 10AM eastern time.

Here's how it ended...

The match was the longest final ever for a grand-slam event. The previous record was Mats Wilander's win over Ivan Lendl at the U.S. Open in 1988, which lasted 4 hours, 54 minutes.

The longest Australian Open final also involved Wilander when he beat Pat Cash in 1988. Today's match was also the longest in the tournament's history.

Not a shock...

But the best part was when, in the longest self-important thank you at the end of the tourney, aides had to bring chairs for both finalists to sit down in- since they were the last part of the ceremony and their bodies were locking up.

Four-letter play-by-player Chris Fowler had it right when Patrick McEnroe asked "What else do you say...?"

his response: "Thank you, Rafa. Thank you, Novak."

Here's last analysis from ESPN...

OSG Buzzer Beater: Ga.Southern with the dagger on UTC

It wasn't a battle of two powerhouse teams, but it was a good game.

Southern Conference hoops. Georgia Southern and Tennessee-Chattagnooga. UTC leads for most of the game, pulling ahead by as much as 16 in the second half. But Southern comes back, taking their first lead of the game with just under 3-minutes left, 70-68.

It went back and forth and when the score was tied at 72 with just six seconds to go, Omar Wattad misses the runner, and the Eagles get the rebound with just a few seconds to go.

Southern takes it down the floor and when Willie Powers tries to drive in for the potential game-winning layup, he's cut off so he kicks it to the corner where a wide-open Jelani Hewitt drops the 3-ball from the left side.

Game over, Georgia Southern wins.

Add Ex-UGA Player To Donnan Lawsuit Queue

((HT: OnlineAthens.com/Shearer))

Add former UGA linebacker and defensive rookie of the year, Kendrell Bell, to the stacks of people who now want a piece of former UGA head football coach Jim Donnan and the whole GLC Holdings mess...

Or, alleged mess...

Bell, through his attorneys, claims that Donnan told him that the $2-million he invested with Donnan GLC would...

From Shearer:

“James Donnan guaranteed (Bell) that his investment was safe and that James Donnan would protect him. James Donnan was a father-figure to (Bell), and (Bell) trusted him implicitly.”

“James Donnan, as one of the two architects of the Ponzi scheme, was the prime salesman and largest beneficiary of the scheme. In short, James Donnan duped (Bell) into investing $2 million, and then diverted his money from GLC to (Jim and his wife Mary Donnan) or other investors.”

Donnan invested millions in GLC at the stat, but would receive a commission when he would bring in other investors. GLC, in court documents, allegedly brought in over $80-million, but only pulled in $12-million in activity.

The huge payouts apparently went to GLC's originators, Donnan and others who were at the top of the payment pyramid.

Donnan filed for bankruptcy protection last year and is in the process of trying to work out payment solutions for creditors. That first round of decisions is set for March.

For those of you who remember what Bell was like as a pro, an example is below...

Patrick Witt may not have been totally truthful about Rhodes Scholar Candidacy

((ht: nytimes))
Patrick Witt

Wow!

Back in November, OSG Sports along with many other outlets reported on the story of now former Yale quarterback Patrick Witt making a decision about playing in the Yale/Harvard game rather than be in New York for a formal interview for a potential Rhodes Scholarship.

Well, it appears, that decision wasn't as "Painful" nor a statement of support for his team as we were led to believe.

The New York Times reports that Witt apparently had his candidacy for the prestigious honor suspended a week earlier after the trust found that Witt had been accused of sexual assault by an unnamed female student at Yale.

There was never a police report filed and the Times says Yale didn't believe it "fit" the criteria for a formal complaint. And in fact, the incident may or may not ever be truly known.

This comes on the heels of Witt's coach, Tom Williams being forced to resign after it was revealed he put on his resume that he too had been considered for a Rhodes scholarship that he passed on to play in the pros.

Confused?

The Times did extensive research on Witt and rather than try and explain the background, you should really click on the link to their story, it's fascinating.

Read the Richard Perez-Pena story on NYTimes.com RIGHT HERE

Okay then.

The story certainly doesn't paint Witt in a great light. Nor is it kind to Yale. But on the surface, no laws were "officially" broken, no rules violated. Witt appears to have just not been as forthcoming as perhaps he should have. It doesn't take away his academic achievements at Yale nor the accomplishments on the football field.

But it does raise some questions about honesty and truthfulness. There is nothing wrong about boasting about accomplishments like being a candidate for a Rhodes scholar. All anyone, we think, would ask is "Be truthful about what you say".

For more on young Mr. Witt, we give you "Inside Yale Football" from this past year. Thanks for the embed code Yale Athletics:

Amare' Stoudemire's All-Star Marketing Plan

Yeah, we know it is blatant commercialism. We know it is an opportunity for a cheap pop. But we always admire a good marketing gimmick.

This one is for Foot Locker and New York Knicks center Amar'e Stoudemire. The premise is pretty simple. Stoudemire is shown giving up what is portrayed to be his NBA Lockout job at Foot Locker so he can return to the NBA. The spot is to promote his bid for a berth in the NBA All-Star/Practice game.

The rest, while amusing, might not necessarily qualify for what George Costanza would call "Comedy Gold".

L.A. Stars Defeat Memphis Tams...Err Clips Over Griz 98-91. Where Was The Red, White & Blue Basketball?

The Los Angeles Stars and the Memphis Tams (aka L.A. Clippers and Memphis Grizzlies) mixed it up at the Staples Center in an ABA battle (The league died in 1976). The Stars won it 98-91.

Bettman: A 3rd Group Interested In Coyotes

((HT: 12News Phoenix/JHendrix70))

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman says there are now three groups showing interest in buying the Phoenix Coyotes to keep them in Glendale.

Bettman was hosting his weekly radio show broadcast from Ottawa when he divulged the information.

The two groups we all know are kicking the tires are:

1) Former San Jose Sharks president and CEO Greg Jamison and,
2) Chicago sports mogul Jerry Reinsdorf's re-energized interest

Bettman said all this talk is just that right now, and that he doesn't want the Coyotes to move. He did say that if a sale is not completed with anyone to keep the team in town that they'd probably move.

But don't be surprised if there's another round of sales and wanting to sign paperwork, that the Goldwater Institute would be involved if there are alleged ownership shenanigans...

Lakers vs. Clippers: A New Rivalry?

Believe it or not, this game actually got kind of chippy. And in some ways, it was nice to see.

The LA Lakers, long the kings of Los Angeles took on the upstart Clippers Wednesday night and aside from it being a pretty good game, there was a bit of dislike expressed.

Specifically, the Lakers Pau Gasol and the Clippers Chris Paul.

After a Blake Griffin foul, the two teams headed to the other end of the court. While walking, Gasol and Paul got into a "Discussion". All the while, Kobe Bryant tried standing between them to keep the peace. That all went out the window when Gasol tried to muss Paul's hair. Paul didn't take it very well, though he managed to keep a semblance of cool on the floor.

The issue in question is right here with sound from Gasol:

Ga. Immigration rule costs Dawgs recruit

((ht: ajc.com))

This could easily become a political statement, but we will try our best to avoid making it such.

According to a report in today's Atlanta Journal Constitution, the University of Georgia football team lost out on a top football recruit due to a recently adopted Board of Regents policy.

That policy says the paper, cost the Bulldogs offensive line recruit Chester Brown, who is originally from Samoa, but attended High School in Hinesville, GA.

They quote a rule that says an "Undocumented student can't take the seat of an otherwise academically qualified Georgia resident who's been turned away due to capacity restraints."

Of course, nobody would "On the record" comment about what happened. Brown, only says that he had to withdraw his commitment to the school for "personal reasons".

Read the entire AJC.com story RIGHT HERE

We are surprised that somehow UGA didn't find a way to make this work. But we also realize the world we live in as well.

One of the questions that wasn't asked and we are curious about is how, if Brown was enrolled in a Georgia High School, could he not be eligible to play at a state school?

Yes, the story, at the end, mentions his family situation, but there are several unexplained things here. It seems as though, if Brown were living with his retired U.S Army uncle, someone would be aware of his status.

Like we said, we won't judge here, though it is tempting. We wish young Mr. Brown the best of luck, because it appears he will land in another state and play college football. We just don't understand why the rules aren't uniform...one way or the other.

MN Governor: Metrodome Or Nothing

((HT: MyFoxTwinCities))

And this can't really be going over well with the Vikings and the Wilf family...

It's the beginning of the General Assembly in Minnesota, and Governor Mark Dayton has told the team-slash-owner that it's either going to be on that site or nowhere else. And that will be discussed this session, without the idea of any other location.

Here's the why on that one...

The Basilica of St. Mary's site would be a team preference as would a billion-dollar proposed development in the Arden Hills suburb. The Vikes are concerned about the lost revenue if they were to play on the U of M campus for the three years it would take to build the new Metrodome.

Amended Charges In Senser Case, Witnesses Come Forward

Amended charges have been filed in the Amy Senser hit-and-run crash from August in Minneapolis.

Senser was supposed to meet her two daughters and a friend of theirs for a concert. She never made it...

A friend of one of the Senser's daughters has now told police she overhead former Minnesota Vikings tight end Joe Senser telling his wife to “just go home.”

Coordinate that with two witnesses who have come forward. One of them, apparently, told police that a car matching Amy Senser’s was weaving and moving at what was termed "inconsistent speeds" before the accident that killed 38-year-old chef Anousone Phanthavong.

Joe Senser's cell phone records also show a call associated with a place called "Florida Detox, Inc.," as well as calls to Amy Senser's brother -- who is a metro-area Twin Cities police officer, a law office and a drug and alcohol treatment facility. Those four calls were all made the day after the accident happened.

Tim Thomas Exercises Free Speech By Lack Of Assembly

It was that day for the Boston Bruins...

They got to meet the Commander-in-Chief, give him an honorary sweater, take pictures, and go on their merry way. But one of the two Americans on the squad, all-everything goalie Tim Thomas, decided not to show and join the group.

GM Peter Chiarelli tried to convince him otherwise, but #TimThomaswouldntgo...

Here's Thomas' explanation as to why...

"I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People.

This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal government.

Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.

Kyle Williams muffed two punts in the game, including the one in overtime that set up the game-winning field goal. He was playing through a shoulder injury sustained in the third quarter, but his dad made no excuses around it in accordance to his performance.

"He thinks he may have separated his shoulder in the third quarter, so he is in the training room. That information he has not said anything about publicly and will not because he felt strongly that he could get the job done. There are no excuses; we don't do that. And we're not talking East Tennessee or anything like that...

It's the big-boy Buccaneers, as in Tampa...

According to the Football Scoop and others, the soon-to-be former Oregon head coach is already in the throes of assembling a staff to head to Tampa...

Here's how KGW started looking at it in Portland...

After meeting with Bucs GM Mark Domenick met with Kelly and they're hoping to have a deal done, officially, within the next day or so...

Heading To Indy: Pats And Someone Else

((HT: CSNBaltimore))

The New England Patriots are heading to the roman numeral classic version 45 in Indianapolis, and a lot of people would say that there are two people directly responsible- The Baltimore Ravens WR Lee Evans and kicker Billy Cundiff.

Cundiff missed a 32 yard, game-tying field goal with time running out in Foxborough. If you look at his plant foot, it was aiming left. And much like a golf swing, wherever that plant foot is aimed that's where the ball is going...

Taking a step backwards, Lee Evans is falling on the sword as well since the game-winning TD was knocked out of his hands...

Prem Week 22 Ends With Two Big Match-ups, Lead Stays 3

((HT: SkySports/PremierLeague/youtube))

A lot of people looked at the end of the Week 22 table gave soccer fans two huge games: the first was Tottenham at Etihad against Man City.

The first half was a bore, but the second was back-and-forth excitement with four goals in a little over 9 minutes. Two goals by City gave the impression that Spurs were in trouble. But they came back with two of their own.

Here's the Gareth Bale goal that tied the game at 2...

But it all came down to Mario Balotelli, who really should not have been on the field after stomping a Spurs player, netting a PK in extra time for the 3-2 win to put City six points clear.

Game two gives us Arsenal against ManU- more on that as it develops...
A goal by Danny Welbeck for United in the 81st minute gave the visitors a 2-1 win at the Emirates over the Gunners.

Goals by Valencia and van Persie tied the game at ones by the 71st minute. So, at the end of the day, Man City's lead is back to three points as the teams have a nine-day break before resuming play.

BREAKING: JoePa loses battle with cancer

(((HT: Associated Press)))

The Nittany Lions and the rest of the college football world lost an icon this morning. Joe Paterno, affectionately known as JoePa, lost his battle with cancer this morning in Pennsylvania.

Below is the statement released by the Associated Press this morning:

STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania (AP) — Joe Paterno, who racked up more wins than anyone else in major college football but was fired from Penn State amid a child sex abuse scandal has died. He was 85.

His family released a statement Sunday morning to announce his death.

Paterno's son Scott announced Nov. 18 that his father was being treated for lung cancer, which was diagnosed in mid-November during a follow-up visit for a bronchial illness.

The storied career of "JoePa" included 409 wins in 46 seasons and two national championships.

But his reputation for success with honor was shattered when a former assistant was charged with molesting 10 boys during a 15-year span, including some in the Penn State athletic complex.

Critics said Paterno should have done more to stop it. He was fired Nov. 9. In all, Paterno guided five teams to unbeaten, untied seasons.

Unlike Onward State's editor Devon Edwards, OSG Sports tripled checked this information before running it. :)

More information about Paterno's death as it becomes available.

Matt Millen, former Penn State linebacker from 1976-79, in an interview on Sunday morning believes that Paterno died "of a broken heart... and that bothers me."

"Knowing what Joe was and how he operated his life... for the way it ended... for it to fall into this whole mess, judging from the words I heard him say... I know this whole thing could have just been killing him. I know those are the wrong words to use. I don't know how else to explain it. It's a shame..."

Paterno, shared something of the same fate as the man who he passed for career coaching wins- Alabama's Bear Bryant. Bryant lived only six months after retiring as the Crimson Tide head coach, and conventional wisdom dictated that once his fate was sealed by the university that Paterno would go the same way.

Brent Musburger when asked about Paterno and his death concurred Millen's sentiments saying, "I don't think there's any question about that. He went to his grave wondering if he could have done more. But I think his good deeds far outweigh his lapse in judgment."

Here is the full family statement on the passing of Joe Paterno:

It is with great sadness that we announce that Joe Paterno passed away earlier today. His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled.

He died as he lived. He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been. His ambitions were far reaching, but he never believed he had to leave this Happy Valley to achieve them. He was a man devoted to his family, his university, his players and his community.

He has been many things in his life - a soldier, scholar, mentor, coach, friend and father. To my mother he was and is her soul mate, and the last several weeks have shown the strength of their love. To his children and grandchildren he is a shining example of how to live a good, decent and honest life, a standard to which we aspire.

When he decided to forego a career in law and make coaching his vocation, his father Angelo had but one command: Make an impact.

As the last 61 years have shown, Joe made an incredible impact. That impact has been felt and appreciated by our family in the form of thousands of letters and well wishes along with countless acts of kindness from people whose lives he touched. It is evident also in the thousands of successful student athletes who have gone on to multiply that impact as they spread out across the country.

And so he leaves us with a peaceful mind, comforted by his "living legacy" of five kids, 17 grandchildren, and hundreds of young men whose lives he changed in more ways than can begin to be counted.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that donations be made to the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania or the Penn State-THON, The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon.

DEVELOPING: Local Reports- Paterno "Near Death" ((UPDATED: Paterno Dead at 85, Or Not...))

((HT: Citizens Voice Newspaper, Scranton-Wilkes-Barre))

Michael Sisak's article brings some sad news- if true...

Sue Paterno has called close family and friends to the State College, Pa. hospital where Joe Paterno has been undergoing lung cancer treatments.

It was to say a "final good-bye" to the legendary college football coach.

The official family statement won't go that far yet...

"Over the last few days Joe Paterno has experienced further health complications," the statement said. "His doctors have now characterized his status as serious. His family will have no comment on the situation and asks that their privacy be respected during this difficult time."

More when we know more...

2050 UPDATE: Paterno has died at the age of 85 according to multiple sources...CBS Sports was one of the first to report the story...

More as it becomes available...

The immediate "more" is that the family spokesman is saying the reports are untrue...

Dan McGinn, the Paterno family spokesman, at 8:57 p.m. on reports of Joe Paterno's death: "Absolutely not true."

2115 UPDATE: The Penn State newspaper, the OnwardState, is reporting that Penn State players have received an e-mail confirming Paterno's passing...

2125 UPDATE: The beauty of the 24-hour news cycle gives us this from Scott Paterno... through his Twitter account...

CBS report is wrong - Dad is alive but in serious condition. We continue to ask for your prayers and privacy during this time.

Sally Jenkins from the Washington Post, who was the journalist to most recently interview Paterno while he was undergoing chemotherapy...

Has this: Joe Paterno is failing, but reports that he has died are untrue. I wish there was a character to signal disgust.

Take the reports from all these different angles however you wish...
More when we know more...
Again...

2130 UPDATE: Sara Ganim, who has been reporting on the Sandusky investigation for the Harrisburg (PA) Patriot-News, has some more words on this...

Source close to family told me reports #JoePaterno is dead and that he was taken off a respirator are both erroneous .. Family very upset

Ganim also says that Paterno is very sick, but able to communicate...

OnwardState has released the following...

We were confident when we ran with it, and are still trying to figure out where our process failed. We apologize sincerely for error. (2/2)

To OS followers: Our 8:45 pm tweet about Joe Paterno's death appears to be inaccurate, according to @JayPaterno, who says he's alive. (1/2)

And the HQ sees this following up as an entirely different story altogether...

2020 UPDATE: The first step has already gone down... OnwardState has publicly apologized, even as CBSSports first linked to them without a mention and then decided to narc on them after all hell broke loose...

From OnwardState... a big decision and gutsy...

I will be stepping down from my post as Managing Editor, effective immediately. I take full responsibility for the events that transpired tonight, and for the black mark upon the organization that I have caused.

I ask not for your forgiveness, but for your understanding. I am so very, very, sorry, and we at Onward State continue to pray for Coach Paterno.

Sincerely,

Devon Edwards

Biggest question... will CBSSports say something...???

Sally Jenkins, who is on a roll tonight, would like for the editor to step forward... interesting idea...

The CBS editor who went with the story of Paterno's death should tweet his own name, instantly. Step up.

2300 UPDATE: According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ron Musselman, through Andrew McGill's feed, Mount Nittany Medical Center has no plans for any kind of presser involving anyone tonight...

US Women Start Four-Ringed Qualifying With 14 Goals

And, yes, it was in one game...

At BC Place in Vancouver, it was a busy night for USWNT head coach Pia Sundhage and the stars and bars. The United States scored three goals in the first seven minutes in a 14-0 rout of the Dominican Republic in the opening game of CONCACAF qualifying.

Amy Rodriguez tied a U.S. record with five goals in a game -- all in the second half -- and the 14 goals are the most the Americans have ever scored in a game, besting their previous mark of 12.

But the larger concern in the tournament is the seriousness of the knee injury of Ali Krieger- a team spokesman said the injury was "serious" and would be reevaluated.

The tourney also has Canada, Costa Rica, and Mexico, and only two berths will be awarded out of qualifying...

Here's some of the goals, since it would take all night to edit them together...

Penn State BOT Gets Change

And it may too little too late, just like everything else on campus in the wake of the Sandusky scandal...

Last night, the Board of Trustees was notified that the top two members- chairman Steve Garban and vice chair John Surma- both said they were not seeking re-election.

They were immediately replaced by banking executive Karen Peetz and potato magnate Keith Masser, who both ran unopposed and received unanimous votes.

Garban and Surma claimed their decision was based on "the increased workload" from the scandal...

The HQ sees that as really weak from someone who is retired and the other who is on the board of US Steel, but that's just us...

Bernie Fine Accuser Wants Civil Case Halted

((HT: WSYR-TV Syracuse))

In a simple statement from his attorney, Bernie Fine accuser Zach Tomaselli is indicating that he wants his civil suit against the former Orangemen assistant basketball coach halted...

From the office of Tomaselli attorney Jeff Kulikowsky:

“Our office, along with Co-counsel Alan Perer, is withdrawing representation of Zach Tomaselli and will be dismissing his case. We are sad and disappointed that we cannot pursue justice for Zach, but we will continue to support him in his recovery.”

Earlier this week you'll recall, current jailhouse attendee Floyd VanHooser admitted that he lied about a Fine molestation to get back at the coach for not supporting him in a criminal case. Two other former SU ball boys have come forward, but the statute of limitations for any molestation claim would have only applied to the Tomaselli case.

Tomaselli told both the Syracuse Post Standard newspaper and the Syracuse University student newspaper, The Daily Orange, that he lied and doctored emails in an effort to convince media that Fine molested him.

Here's the latest from Syracuse...

So, the HQ asks: Now what...???
We dunno, either...

REPORT: Updyke Turns Down Plea Deal

((HT: Birmingham News))

Evan Woodbery of the Birmingham News, among others, is reporting that alleged Toomer's tree poisoner Harvey Updyke turned down a plea deal.

The deal would have meant a sentence of 13 years behind bars for his act of treachery and a permanent ban from Alabama football games...

The HQ figured where that would go immediately- if not sooner- in all of this...

Here's Updyke returning to a Lee County court earlier this week when his current attorney, Everett Wess, asked the current judge in the case recuse himself and tried to move the trial out of Lee County ((AL)).

The trial is scheduled for March, but the HQ will believe it when the HQ sees it.

Lewd Bama fan from BCS game found and arrested

((ht: ledger-enquirer.com))

The mystery of the Alabama fan who put his genitals in the face of a passed out LSU fan after the BCS Championship game has been solved. And yes, there was a YouTube video of this.

32-Year-old Brian Downing, who apparently lives in Smith Station, Alabama is facing charges of sexual battery and obscenity and was booked into a New Orleans jail on Thursday afternoon.

The arrest apparently came after Downing and his attorney showed up at the Russell County, Alabama sheriffs office so Downing could turn himself in. He apparently is the cousin of Russell County's sheriff.

It all appears to have gone down the night of January 9th after Alabama had shut down L.S.U in the B.C.S Championship game. Downing and the unnamed victim were at a Krystal restaurant on Bourbon Street. The LSU fan was apparently heavily intoxicated and wearing LSU gear when he was found and mocked by several 'Bama fans. Someone shot the entire thing on a cellphone camera...which was bad, until Downing allegedly dropped his drawers.

That's when things turned illegal.

Read a full description of how the story unfolded from the Columbus Ledger RIGHT HERE

Ok.

Really, there isn't a lot we can add here. This seems to be a case of drunken idiots being drunken idiots and doing idiotic things.

Plain and simple. There isn't much else to say about it. If Downing is indeed found guilty of this, he deserves everything he gets. It doesn't mean the LSU fan should have been so drunk he passed out, but he did and it still doesn't excuse what was done to him

This is just something the legal process will have to take care of. But it is still somewhat appalling.

WTVM-TV in Columbus, GA gives us the TV version of the story:

Here's the side from the Bama side of the border...

BREAKING: Sarah Burke Dies From Injuries

Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke has died from injuries sustained in the superpipe accident at the Park City, Utah resort she was practicing in last week.

Burke had been in a medically-induced coma and in critical condition since hitting her head in a fall at the superpipe at Park City Mountain Resort on January 10th.

Here's Burke winning the XGames-15 skiing event in the superpipe...
((HT: ESPN/XGames))

More when we know more...

1600 UPDATE: Amy Donaldson of the Deseret News has the following statement from the Canadian Freestyle Skiing Association...

"What defines Sarah now is what has always defined her," said Canadian Freestyle Ski Association CEO Peter Judge. "She was always very gregarious, very outgoing and popular with those around her. She is very giving in terms of her time, especially in the sport."

Burke's family released the following statement regarding her passing at 9:22AM local time:

"The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude for the international outpouring of support they have received from all the people Sarah touched."

Hospital officials at the University of Utah hospital say Burke sustained severe irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood after falling into cardiac arrest on site in Park City before she was taken to hospital. As a result, doctors say Burke passed away "peacefully surrounded by those she loved."

The hospital also said that Burke's organs and tissues were donated to "save the lives of others."

For more information on making donations on behalf of Sarah Burke, the family is asking everyone go to http://www.giveforward.com/sarahburke.

The family will not be making any future public statements...

1700 UPDATE:
Judge told FOSG and Sportsnet Big Hoo-Hah Glen MacDonald, through Glenny-Mac's Twitter Feed:

told me Sarah would've won gold in 4 different Olympics if her sport was given opportunity. She was that good.

Burke was instrumental in getting women's skiing events entered in the Winter Four-Ringed Circus. She was trying to get freestyle in her home country events in Vancouver, but it will be included in the Sochi Games in 2014.

To say she was a pioneer and a trailblazer isn't using hyperbole, and her impact and vision in the sport will be missed immeasurably...

Here's early coverage from our friends at CTV...
((HT: CanadianHQTV))

1715 UPDATE: More from Glen MacDonald...

Sarah Burke was injured practicing a Flatspin 5 - a move she has done many times before. Peter Judge called it a "freak accident"

1725 UPDATE: Courtesy of our friends at GlobalToronto, here is part of the text of the statement released from Burke's family through Burke's publicist, Nicole Wool...

It details the nature of the accident and how Sarah Burke was injured...

As the result of Sarah's fall, she suffered a ruptured vertebral artery, one of the four major arteries supplying blood to the brain. The rupture of this artery led to a severe intracranial hemorrhage, which caused Sarah to go into cardiac arrest on the scene. Emergency personnel responded and CPR was administered on the scene during which time she remained without a pulse or spontaneous breathing. Studies in the University of Utah Hospital Emergency Department indicated that she retained brainstem function. She was placed on life support and a protocol of therapeutic hypothermia was initiated to protect her brain. An angiogram indicated the site of arterial bleeding, and on Wednesday, January 11 the injured artery was successfully repaired.

After the operation, numerous neurological examinations, electrodiagnostic tests and imaging studies revealed that Sarah sustained severe irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood after cardiac arrest, resulting in hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. Sarah passed away peacefully surrounded by those she loved. In accordance with Sarah's wishes, her organs and tissues were donated to save the lives of others.

While early reports in the media stated that Sarah's injury was a traumatic brain injury, it is important to note that Sarah's condition was the result of a lack of oxygen to the brain during cardiac arrest.

Jerome Simpson Indicted On Marijuana Charge

Not that the HQ is surprised or anything...

And this was one charge he couldn't go all-Gymkata on and avoid...

A Kentucky grand jury indicted the Bengals wide receiver on a felony count of trafficking marijuana. If he is found guilty, the crime could put Simpson in the pokey for anywhere from one and five years. But, since he does not have a criminal record, Simpson could be eligible for "diversion"- whatever that means.

Simpson has been under investigation since mid-September when 2-and-a-half pounds pounds of marijuana was allegedly delivered to his home from California. Authorities say Simpson's girlfriend signed for the package that was addressed to a "Jason Snider."

The package was discovered by a drug-sniffing dog on its way out of the state of California, according to California Department of Justice spokesperson Michelle Gregory, and tracked to the Simpson address.

Here's the original story from our friends at CPO, since it was after all, Brother Phil's old address...

No word yet on the fate of Simpson's roommate, Anthony Collins...
