NPSL This Week: July 18, 2013 (UPDATED)

Okay, let's just say there were A LOT of upsets in the opening round of the playoffs...

South Region

Tulsa Athletics lost to Chattanooga FC on penalty kicks. Tulsa’s high octane attack went up against CFC’s dominant defense led by goalkeeper Gregory Hartley.

For Chattanooga, Andy Stewart, Jose "Zeca" Ferraz, and Thibault Charmey all scored in PK's.
Hartley saved all three Tulsa attempts.

Chattanooga FC plays RVA in Richmond, VA on Sunday night.

In the 61st minute Jacksonville’s Jonathan Glenn received a red card, forcing the Florida side to play a man down for the last 30 minutes.

Midwest Region

Detroit City FC, left the regular season with an 11-0-1 record, but was knocked out by the Erie Admirals in a 4-1 loss. DCFC knocked out AFC Cleveland 3-1 in one of two Saturday matches. And Erie had beaten FC Buffalo 5-2 to advance to the conference final.

Erie travels to Quad City to play the Eagles Saturday...

Western Region

FC Hasental fell to the Sacramento Gold in an 8-5 shoot out- the 13 goals is a record for the NPSL playoffs.

And the Sonoma County Sol shut out the San Diego Flash 3-0. The goals came from Chris Daly, Nico Spann, and Ross Middlemiss with Trevor Hurst assisting on all three.

Sacramento travels to Sonoma County Saturday night...

Northeast Region

The Northeast Region will join the playoff mix this week as the league gets closer and closer to the National Finals on August 3rd. Greater Binghamton and Red Bulls are in one semifinal while the Brooklyn Italians lost 2-1 to FC LVU Sonic. Those two winners play Sunday.

UPDATED: Binghamton beat Red Bulls 2-1 while the Sonic won, so that means the game is in Binghamton Sunday for the bid out of the region...

Player of the Week

The winner, for the week ending July 7, is Miami United midfielder Simone Quintieri.

Quintieri scored a goal off a free kick in Miami’s 2-1 win over the Cape Coral Hurricanes on July 6. He played a total of 5 games for Miami, registering 7 assists and 1 goal.

He became one of the league’s international stars, having spent time in the Italian leagues before moving to the top-flight in Indonesia. Currently he is being courted by teams from Italy’s Serie B and Malta’s Premier League.
