Boise St. gets State Board OK for Big East move

((ht: idahopress.com))

So, maybe we were wrong in our thought that Boise State playing football in the Big East was a bad idea. On second thought, it is a bad idea, but it appears that Boise State is going to do it anyway.

According to multiple published reports, including the Idaho Press, the school's president, Bob Kustra, has gotten permission from the state's Board of Regents to make the move at his discretion. Kustra was in the process of trying to find a home for the school's other sports as it appears the Big East move will be a Football only move.

The move will put the Broncos in a BCS bid conference. In fact, the day the Broncos accept the bid into the Big East, they become the best team in the league.

In some respects, we understand this move, but it creates a whole new set of logistical issues for the school. Not knowing the specifics of the school's athletic budget, we can only assume they operate like most higher profile major college schools; at a deficit. That will only grow now that their travel budget will grow...exponentially.

The move will be part of a larger move expected to be confirmed on Friday. The Big East has extended invitations in football to Air Force and Navy and in all sports to Houston, SMU and UCF in all sports. The moves are intended to position the Big East as a conference still worthy of a BCS bid. And while we will avoid espousing the illegality of the whole BCS in general, it only reaffirms that it is perhaps the weakest link of all the illegal BCS conferences.
