A Closer look at the NCAA investigation of Cam Newton

And before any Auburn folks out there say "Now what"...just take a deep breath and relax.

According to a story in the Birmingham News, the ups and downs of the NCAA investigation of Cam Newton, his family, Auburn and Mississippi State nearly got Newton pulled twice and showed that there was no evidence what so ever tying Auburn to anything against the rules.

Reporter Charles Goldberg got a hold of the NCAA Investigative documents and those documents showed several things. Among them, after determining former Miss. St. player Kenny Rogers and Cecil Newton tried to get money from Miss. St, the NCAA couldn't figure out whether Rogers acted as an agent or not.

They decided not.

Essentially, this story reinforces Auburn's claim of innocence. It also seemed to show the NCAA, while being somewhat thorough and detailed in their investigation, couldn't figure out exactly what they should do about the situation.

Ultimately, nobody ended up sanctioned because of this. Yes, Kenny Rogers and Cecil Newton got a bit of a slap on the wrist and Mississippi State was never seriously questioned, but nobody was seriously harmed here.

The question, we hope, opened a bit of a Pandora's box and we also hope it is one the NCAA will quickly close. But we suspect, given their slow reaction and investigation of just about everything, this type of issue will come up again.

And yes, conspiracy theorists, this should put the Cam Newton/Auburn alleged shenanigans story to rest...once and for all.
