TWTW: This years "Game of the Century" won by LSU

And it came down to who had the best field goal kicker. But then again, it would have been nearly impossible for the game to live up to the hype surrounding it.

LSU took a giant step towards winning a national championship late Saturday night by beating Alabama in Tuscaloosa, 9-6 in overtime.

The game was completely dominated by the defenses, something that wasn't a total surprise. Though like most, we thought there would be more scoring than that.

Drew Alleman nailed a 25-yard field goal in the 1st overtime to win the game. More significant, perhaps, was Alabama missing 3 field goals and having another one blocked.

Alleman's kick sent the LSU players and a good chunk of the state of Louisiana into a frenzied screaming fit. Unfortunately, it probably didn't answer many of the questions surrounding who really was better.

It also set off immediate speculation that both teams would again face off for the national (wait, not correct)--the BCS championship.

That would be a huge mistake.

But it wouldn't surprise us if it happened. We think Alabama is just as good as LSU...but.

First off, LSU still has to beat Arkansas, and that isn't a lock. Alabama has 3 games left. They'll easily beat Mississippi State and Georgia Southern (huh?). But they'll need to beat Auburn...at Auburn. Again, not a guarantee.

If LSU runs the table, they will be in the BCS game. If Stanford...or Oklahoma State or Boise State runs the table, they...not Alabama should be the opponent.

Sorry Alabama fans, you lost. You lost at home. You lost a "Not-so-pretty" game. But...we also know how CORRUPT the BCS system is, so it wouldn't surprise us if they find a way to pad the computer ratings to get you in the championship game either.

This all shouldn't take away from the LSU win. It was impressive. It was one of the most physical college football games I've ever seen. It wasn't pretty. But it didn't have to be. It went..and ended about the way many thought it would, though most of us admittedly didn't think it would come down to the field goal kickers.
