Liverpool's Luis Suarez Gets 8 Match Ban

Luis Suarez has been handed an eight game ban for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.

From Chris Bascombe at The Telegraph:

Suárez admitted calling Evra a “Negro” once but denied it was an insult. He claimed it was in response to being called a “South American” by his opponent. Evra alleged he was racially insulted 10 times by Suárez.

The Uruguay striker had strongly denied the accusation and was fully supported by Liverpool.

Evra made the claims immediately after the match between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield two months ago, telling French TV station Canal Plus that Suarez had used a racist insult to him "at least 10 times".

Evra said: "There are cameras. You can see him (Suarez) say a certain word to me at least 10 times."

Here's the BBC's Mark Lawerenson discussing the ban and the 40,000-pound fine

Nothing, naturally, will happen until the appeals process goes through and Suarez is still being looked at for allegedly flipping off fans at a Fulham match earlier in the year...
