Memphis finds coach then finds new coach

((ht: al.com/commericalappeal.com))

Justin Fuente
Since this is the University of Memphis football program that we are talking about, we aren't surprised that the ending was "Bizarre" to say the least.

It appeared the Tigers were set to hire Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain the job of resurrecting the football team. And supposedly, McElwain agreed in principle to come to Memphis.

But then he didn't.

According to reports he backed out and considering the previous coach, Larry Porter went 3-21 over the past 3-years, we aren't surprised.

But...the Tigers have found their new coach. And he is TCU co-offensive coordinator Justin Fuente. Fuente...at this moment, will be presented to the local media on Thursday.

The Memphis Commerical Appeal gives us a look at the bizarre search RIGHT HERE

Fuente has no head coaching experience though he was a former QB at Oklahoma and Murray State back in the late '90's.

As for McElwain, Al.com says he bailed out on Memphis after being unable to get the backing to improve the facilities and staff at the perennial Bottom of the Barrel school.

As for Memphis, its widely believed the poor performance of the football team prevented them or weakened their case to be players in the Conference Realignment game. They've been a bad team for a long time.

And though Fuente has a decent pedigree as an assistant, one has to wonder if he has what it takes to fix the multitude of problems in Memphis.
