One of the true college football legends in punditry, Pittsburgh legend Beano Cook has passed in his sleep at the age of 81.
Cook joined ESPN in 1986 and became an instant hit for his knowledge of the game, its history, pageantry, and its place in the fabric of the country.
He was Pitt's sports information director from 1956-66 and moved to ABC Sports to be their NCAA press director. He wrote for the St. Pete Times, moved to the Miami Dolphins, Mutual Radio, and back to ABC before moving to ESPN.
He'll be missed, even if some of his ideas were panned universally- like saying Notre Dame QB Ron Pawlus would win the Heisman... twice or four times...
But some times, he was right on...
